Thank you for this tutorial, because it's been a long time since I was looking for an explanation to make light effects without airbrush because I painted my figures with a brush exclusively, so thank you again!
This is absolutely the theme I'm going with for all the new Necrons in the 9th edition starter box set. I fell in love with them the moment I saw them on one of your battle reports. Though I'm considering making a couple modifications and would like your thoughts. Primarily, doing the glow effect with Citadel's Calledor Sky, then highlighted with Teclis Blue, followed with a top-most highlight of Ulthuan Grey, and finished with the Guilliman Blue recess shading. I'm also considering PVA gluing sand and rocks to the mini before priming and sponging on some leadbelcher to give the effect of areas that the caked-on sand is starting to come off.
Mate... your work with a brush is brutally stunning, its absolutely love your necron sandstone scheme, it almost makes me want to drop my Thousand sons right away, love the finished product, in the realistic time frame and relative "ease" with which you achieve a fantastic result. really appreciate your vids.

That's great Benjamin, thanks for letting me know! That's exactly why I started making these videos. Experienced painters probably won't need these tips, but I would have loved to know some of them when I started all those years ago. Good luck!
@@MidwinterMinis You should check out lester bursley miniatures painting channel. Updates are pretty slow but he does great work, his videos are very information driven. I use his sunny skin tone airbrush highlighting technique all the time. 11 parts water to 1 part sunny skin tone though a very low psi brush with very low feed. Works great on black.
Been wanting to do a bone and light blue Necron army for a while, and with kill team out, I thought it would be the perfect time. Loving your videos, can't wait for more.
Excellent, thank you for sharing your method! I feel like getting an airbrush is a big step in painting that I'm not sure I want to take just yet, so this looks like a pretty solid alternative.
Yo! That's true, it certainly is a big step, but it's not a necessary one. It's really just a time saver, and lets you do some easier tricks with colour and light transitions, but those are all basic techniques. Getting "good" with an airbrush takes just as long, if not longer, than getting good with a brush.
What I love about sandy/dusty Tomb Kings and these kinds of Necrons is that drybrushing actually makes the model look better, due to the rough texture actually being desirable. So, rather than being a method that sacrifices the quality of the paint job for time and ease, drybrushing actually ends up being an all-round win. This applies to wooden/bark things like Sylvaneth as well...
i use citadels 'ARDCoat (gloss varnish) to make painted lights look like they are under glass again.. its good for gems and such also... it doesnt matter how rough it gets from dry brushing.. it leaves you with a nice shiny light/gem.. love the paint scheme of your necrons..
You made this look so easy, always kind of intimidated but OSL with a brush but im going to try this on my warmachine army instead of doing it with my AB as usual
Thanks Josh, glad you enjoyed it! The benefit of doing it this way is you can control the contrast you create a lot more than with airbrush. The result isn't as smooth, but you can create tighter, more "popping" effects this way, especially on small things like eyes. Good luck!

Just pulled it off the wall of the game store tbh) model of a magic wolf for a painting comp and im gonna try this for the runes strewn about his legs. If you want to stop that orange peel effect from the dry brushing over the glowing areas you'll have to completely avoid those areas when priming by masking them off with either masking fluid or some form of putty. Then you'll want to brush on a layer of blue then very lightly sand/polish it flat. (polish if the paint is still soft) You should end up with a near perfectly smooth base, it should look like a low gloss even though its matt paint. After that paint blue with layers of wash. The gloss effect will disappear at this stage but that is only due to microscopic bumps from the wash. continue your steps from here. You will find that the dry brushing will look as if it was airbrushed on. I only reccomend doing this just for the challenge or for learning how to do a candy finish because it is basically the same steps ; trying to create a perfectly flat coat. Using air cans for primer will cause orange peeling it's just a fact. but you can also sand back can primer very easily without fear of tearing the paint as is possible with layering. i sand all my can primed minis, it really doesn't take as long as it sounds 5 passes over an area is usually fine and that takes about 1 second. sanding off a 28mm mini usually takes about 1 min. What you will find when doing this is how easy it is to engrave you're own extra details into your minis. but that's another story.
Sponged back fine grain. Minimum 400 grit. The higher you go in grit the more you need to sand and the faster the sponge will loose sand. Try to avoid the sand 'paper' sponges with paper glued to the sponge as the sharp edges of miniatures can tear it and the paper tries to retain its shape. Instead look for 'sand sponges' that's with the fine sand adhered directly to the sponge. It allows for better sanding on detail areas as the sponge will conform to the shape of the miniature and remove the orange peel evenly.
Great job, really nice to see a brush tuitional for this effect, OSL is one of those things unfortunately that when done well looks awesome but when done poorly can ruin a paint job. Fortunately this looks awesome!

I do technique I call "damp brushing" as well which is dry brushing, but with a tiny amount of moisture. it gives you better coverage, but you have to be careful as it will fill in details. It's better for lesser details areas. You can actually create blends with this technique as well.

Great use of translucent Glow-Paints! It would have been nice to do the Art some justice by firing it up with a bright light before a very brief _Showcase_ clip at the end, with subdued lighting and with the glow at maximum when filming. Thanks for the up!
Thank you! This was only my 2nd video, but maybe I'll get fancy with special lighting in the future ;)
Thanks for the tutorial! I'm going to try this out on some cave mushrooms 👌
Painting cave mushrooms, or consuming cave mushrooms?
@@MidwinterMinis I am not confident in my ability to paint miniatures after having consumed cave mushrooms 👽👨🎨
