Stunning views of Lake Maninjau, from atop and ground level. I enjoy this ride with you thoroughly, soaking in the scenic sights of the mountains, lakes and lush vegetation this land has to offer. Thanks for sharing this, Doug.

Yet another daring adventure of dashing Doug ! Incredible how you all alone drive us to the dead crater lake in spite of the 44 risky turns on your motor bike .
    Tks a lot

19:28 - that was the money shot for me. Wow wow wow... what a view indeed. I agree with you that being smaller than Lake Toba, it does give the perception of it being a product of volcano which is so darn cool to look at. I'm very sure any camera would not be comparable to viewing it in person.

Great video. I visited Maninjau in 94 and 98 on my mountain bike and boy was it remote. The lakeshore road was dirt and cobblestones in parts. 3 days stay wasn't enough. Went up and down the more than 44 bends. West Sumatra is thoroughly underrated.

What an amazing vlog, Doug. Reminds me a bit on your Mae Hong Son Loop with these Chinese Village at a Lake.

Thank you. This lake really took me by surprise. I knew it was a local attraction, but it was much more interesting than I expected. I was very glad to have the scooter. 🙂

I assume it's windless in the caldera.

You should pass another beautiful route when coming back to Bukittinggi. It's called Malalak Route, which stretched along the edge of Mount Singgalang. You can even see Indian Ocean from the highest view point there.

So glad to see you so happy enjoying the scenery without peddling on your bicycle!…it’s long we’ll deserved for with all the electronic problems you’ve been encountering. The 360 camera views and soundtracks are great!
    Cheers Doug!

Indonesian National heroes from Maninjau: Buya Hamka, muslim cleric and writer, you passed by his museum on your way around the lake, Muhammad Natsir (Indonesia’s 5th prime minister) and Rasuna Said (independence and women’s rights activist).
I personally don’t like those fish farms. Lake Maninjau lets out a bit of sulfur once in awhile, the endemic fish are used to it, but the fish that are farmed usually aren’t endemic so those fish would die. The lake would then smell bad and gets murky because of all the dead non endemic farmed fish. I guess that’s one of the reasons tourism hasn’t taken off in there.

Its great xperiece Sir! Fyi because of Indonesian Monitary crisess in 98-99th many country give travel warning to visit Indonesia, asspecially from european country because of the social & political here unstabile & also not secure for visitor becouse of many demonstration all region of this country on that time, its make the number of visitor here decrease dramaticcally, couse on the past before that is so many european visitor tourist filled Bukittinggi and maninjau many of them choose to just walking from top of Kelok 44 into the lake... and many of home syay there is full with foreigner.... ohh i really miss that time. Oh ya I live In Padang City, and also a youtuber U can also see my channel as a refference of tourist attractions and interesting food on the other side of West Sumatra. Good luck

Btw, how difficult do you think it would be to ride back up the "44 Curves" on a bicycle instead? Would it be comparable to the climb you did towards Bkt Tinggi?
