30+ year fan of Tool, no one else compares. The best band of my lifetime! Every song is a hit! Maynard James Keenan is the vocalist and considers his voice as another instrument, that's why it's not as "loud". Danny Carey/The Octopus is the drummer. Justin Chancellor is the bassist and Adam Jones is the guitarist. They each have mastered their craft. #Toolforever

Tool has been around since the early 90s. We all love a new tool listener. It's worth going through an entire album from start to finish. If you are interested, I'd start with 10,000 days then Lateralus then Fear inoculum. There are a ton of individual recommendations for songs. Oh, definitely skip the official videos, it makes it hard to focus on the music because the vids are wild. Lyric videos are probably the way because often Maynard keeps his vocals lower in the mix

Tool army coming in hot! No music videos on reactions. Just do audio or audio/lyric videos. Tool's music is unbelievably complex without trying to decipher visuals. Check out the song and if you want to watch the music video later then do it on your own. SPIRAL OUT!

Just listen brother. Good headphones, eyes closed in a dim room is best the first few listens. Then watch the lyric video. There’s an equation to get into TOOL as a new listener. Everyone does it differently and everyone of them is correct. lol Godspeed

The song title "The Pot" hits two ways in the lyrics:
"You must have been high!" (on pot) & "You f@#kin hypocrite" ( the pot calling the kettle black ).
Someone else here recommended lyric video over the official videos and I 💯 agree.

It is off beat, and on beat at the same time, exactly like you said, but that's Tool. Many of their songs have these inflection points but they are unique in the way the put it all together to sound amazing along with their seamless transitions, into different beats.

Hints for best listening of Tool: don't watch the videos, stick to audio or lyric videos. Use headphones, the band is dynamic as is the sound swirls around you. It may take a few listens to fully get a song, but even then, there is always more to hear the more times you hear it. If you listen to Tool, the Tool Army will follow you on your journey. Spiral out!

To answer your question: I think you’re listening to one of the best guitarists on the planet. Technical skill and talent is one thing but the creativity, uniqueness and rawness of Adam makes him the whole package.
Danny on drums is CERTAINLY the absolute GOAT. No question.
The genre IS TOOL. The don’t fit a mold. Read the lyrics first or while listening. Don’t watch videos… they are just distracting. The Pot is a good first listen song but is far far far from their best.

best guitarist is just an opinion. some play faster and are really good at it. some just write great riffs . its all up to the individual. i like adam jones style ( TOOL) his tone and ability to create atmosphere and tension in his music is so good. he ia notthe fastest or most technical but i love his style. TooL is most like a heavier pink floydd prog/metal/rock

Even in their live shows, Maynard, the singer, is staged in the back alongside the drummer (GOAT). Bass and guitar are staged in the front. But don't worry, Manard's as twice as clear as heaven when the song demands it.

The song, as I understand it, is about shady lawyers, music execs, record labels, and the justice system being a kangaroo court and all those same people taking more than their fair share of money from the bands talent and work. A very typical story we often hear about with greedy music labels making tons of money from the work of others, Effin' lawyers and legal types that didn't make the music but sure are cashing checks and demanding more.

The song is directed at a corrupt judge in the California legal system and his hypocritical and unfair treatment of cannabis users. That in mind, the song is a perfect fit for our current VP. Robert Plant is a vocalist. You must mean Jimmy Page. I prefer Gilmore.

The beat sounds odd to you because you're used to music in 4/4 time (4 beats per measure) with the accent on the downbeat (beat 1 & 3). The first 3 and 1/2 minutes of this are in 4/4 but the accents are landing in a strange way giving it a different feel. Then towards the end the time changes to 6/8 time. Tool doesn't make music to dance to with a straight ahead feel. Robert Plant is not a guitar player maybe you were thinking Jimmy Page he's the guitar player in Zeppelin. To compare those two guitarist is futile, their playing styles and production styles are so different. It's fair to say that for what they do they can hang with the best no problem.
