  • This cemetery is located in Santa Fe, New Mexico next to the Fairview Cemetery on Cerrillos Road. It is in desperate need of a clean up as it is completely neglected and trashed.

    Independent Order of Odd Fellows (I.O.O.F) is one of the Oldest Fraternities in America, they are considered to be the Poor Man's Fraternity, they originated from England, establish themselves along with Freemasons of America. The I.0.0.F do not affiliate themselves as Freemason though they share a lot in common. One thing that they were heavily involved with back in the late 1800s to early 1900s were Burials and Cemeteries. The Odd Fellows just like the Masons are both Protestant, hundreds of small towns through America would have a Church and Cemetery near by. Most of the Original Odd Fellows and Freemason were owners of the majoriy of the Protestant Cemeteries, as time went by they died out and along with the care of these Historic Cemeteries.

      I guess that's exactly what happened with this cemetery. It looks like this chapter is still active but maybe smaller and funds limited? I'm not sure. I had no idea what the cemetery was nor the building I was by until I was researching it tonight. I sure hope that something can be done to change the shape of the cemetery. I think that granite/countertop company should probably pitch in as well.

      This area is probably similar to a lot you see. They don't have to have green grass or mow but they sure don't need all the trash and mixed up markers. Seems like people are just lost in this one unless that IOOF has some cemetery records or something.

    • @SoCalUrbex74
      @SoCalUrbex74 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      @@RhettyforHistory My discoveries I found out that most IOOF's are no longer active, records of the deceased and burials markings were lost on a national level.
      Only way to fully restore this Cemetery oand Others would be to get a Special Archeological Team. That team would investigate, pull up records, used Special Equipment to read underground corpses and restore all Tomstones. The Cost could be in the thousands, something that the current IOOF doesn't have. The only other option is the State or City takes over as ownership of these Forgotten Cemetries and implies these steps in mentioned. So far, the only ones that are retreaving Old Cemeyeries are the Mormons, evreyone else like the Masons and Odd Fellows are not being supported.

    Hi Rhetty, I was so curious about the history and such of this cemetery and after reading the comments from Socal Urbex on the history. I went to findagrave and put in the first name on the headstone you read. Harry Wiley died 1947. He has a nice story about him. He worked at age 9 by helping drive 100 cattle, and he drove ore wagons from the familys copper mine. Also was a butcher, Him and his cousin raised horses for the calvery. "Rough Riders" was the name given to the First U.S. Volunteer Cavalry under the leadership of Theodore Roosevelt. He was a rough rider and then after that owened some bars untill his death. I know you like history thought I would share this. I left out a lot of details but interesting little story. He is burried in his uncles family plot last name of Uncle is Arnold.

    Very sad to see these graves neglected. I'm glad you were able to document this site, maybe it will get the community interested in preserving it before it's lost. I looked up a few of the names you pointed out hoping they would lead to more information about the site, but wasn't able to find all that much. Although, for Horace S. Yeomans, whose headstone appears at 11:15, I found a brief mention on him in the June 16, 1880 edition of The Pall Mall Gazette (a London newspaper!). It reads: "Yeomans, Horace S., son of the late Mr. James of Oak Hall, Wanstead, [died] at Santa Fe, New Mexico, Aged 38, April 16th." Sorry for being so wordy :) Safe travels out there, my friend!

    • @RhettyforHistory

      That's interesting that they mentioned him in a London newspaper. All I can think of when I hear Pall Mall is the old cigarettes I used to see people smoke when I was a kid. I don't know if those are still on the market. It seems like if people do smoke now it's Marboro. Paul Mall must have been an actual person? Thanks for looking that up and sharing what you found. I hope that this does reach someone in the area that decides to make a difference. I really don't think it would take much. Thanks for watching my friend.

      @@RhettyforHistory Funny you mention Pall-Malls, they were my grandmother's brand of choice - I can still see that famous red pack! The name refers to an area in the City of London. How it came to be named that, I don't know. As for the cemetery, it takes a community effort to get them back on their feet. Most people who live in Santa Fe probably don't even realize the cemetery exists, so the more coverage it gets the better.

    • @RhettyforHistory
      @RhettyforHistory  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I did not know that about Pall Mall. I think my grandmother did Virginia Slims and my grandfather was Camel or Lucky. My mom was True Menthol until she stopped thankfully in 1986. You're right about the community getting involved. I wonder how many have even noticed it. It is on a super busy road but is located next to a well maintained cemetery. Many people may just think it's a business back lot. I would love to see the countertop/granite company pick up their pieces they have been dumping in there.

    Interesting video. Did you give any thought to asking any of the local residents if they knew anything about this cemetery? Curious about old funeral home markers. I don't think there were any funeral homes in the late 1800's. Funeral homes seem to have sprung up from the 1930's onward. I remember my late mother telling me that when her mother died in 1925, the wake was in her house in the living room and there was no embalming. I have also heard other older people mention the custom of wakes in the family home.

    • @RhettyforHistory
      @RhettyforHistory  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not sure if you are out of the country or not but this is way more common than you would think. It's really not the states or cities responsibility to take care of it. There are some small towns that do it but usually almost never large cities. Many times cemeteries are taken care of by trusts, committees, funeral homes and organizations. Smaller cemeteries are often taken care of by families or every day people like you and me. In this cemeteries case it really wouldn't be difficult to clean up. Nothing will really grow more than it has. That area doesn't need to mow necessarily. But it sure doesn't need all the trash. What is sad is all the broken and mixed up markers.

    Very sad cemetery. There's a cache there. It's near an outlaw named Samuel Wesley Ketchum. Him and his brother started the Ketchum gang. He died in 1899 in prison from gangrene and blood poisoning after a shootout. That information was in the cache description.

      Someone else found that cache and pointed it out and told me about the outlaw. I had no idea what cemetery it was until I got home to Oklahoma and did some research. I'm a little bummed that I didn't know there was an outlaw there because I love that kind of stuff. There is a lot more in that area that I would like to cover so I will definitely be going back.

    I've come back to this watch this video several times now. .... I guess that's because it bothers me that this neglect is sad but it's one thing, however - dumping trash in a cemetery is quite another thing! It's just so .... disrespectful. I hope that anyone in the area who cares about the local area will call the local news or better still, call the city authorities and get the ball rolling to clean up this disgraceful state of affairs! If there's any community pride here at all, then why wouldn't they organise a working bee of as many locals as possible to get together and spend a few hours cleaning this up! Many hands make light work, and a fun BBQ at the end of the day would be a good reward as well as an opportunity to bring your community together more. I sure hope that some like-minded locals read this and take action!

    • @RhettyforHistory
      @RhettyforHistory  5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Literally I could clean this cemetery up by myself in probably 5 hours. It really doesn't need mowing in this area because that's how many cemeteries are in this area. It just needs trash removal. The biggest amount of it is coming from the counter company next door. So even if someone cleans this up that company will keep throwing scraps over until the city decides to fine the company. I think that's what needs to happen most. A $250 fine per scrap would solve it quickly. And really that company should be the one picking that up.

      @@RhettyforHistory
      HELLO Rhetty! Nice to hear from you! I sincerely hope that you and your family are all safe and well. America has been hit so hard by the CoVid-19 pandemic. Only the state of Victoria in Australia is really suffering from a nasty breakout. TBH - people where I live are behaving like everything is perfectly normal. No one bothers to observe social distancing so I'm trying to just stay home as much as life allows to be possible. I'm so sorry I haven't been in touch - I've just been so busy, first renovating my home from the timber floors up, and then selling it and buying a new one - which only just settled today. It's just beautiful--but it's been an incredibly stressful 12 months for us to get to this point! Mind you, 2020 has been the "annus horribilus" to end them all for just about everyone on the globe!
      So I haven't had a second to myself, much less for TH-cam - and I don't do Facebook or any other social media.
      So anyway .. About this Oddfellows Cemetery - I wrote quite a few emails over several months regarding the state that it's in, and particularly about the dumping of garbage etc by local businesses.
      I've written to the local branch of Oddfellows, as well as several other branches in the US, and I tracked down contacts for the local city AUTHORITIES and sent them emails as well. And. I. Got. NOTHING. BACK. So I sent them again, but worded quite differently, twice more. But still, I heard nothing. I can't even get SOMEONE to respond!
      I included the link to your channel and the actual link to your video about this cemetery so they can see the state of it for themselves - but my guess is that if someone in any position of authority responds to me or to yourself, or sees your video...we'll then they'd have to get off their ass and actually DO SOMETHING about it. And after the recent events in my own life, (renovating & selling my home - and in buying another one), I've discovered that these days most people are downright lazy, and very few people keep their word. Anyone and everyone involved in anything I needed doing will do as little as possible (if anything at all), but at the end of the day they will still put their hands out for as much money as they can possibly squeeze from me.
      RAK's (random acts of kindness) are becoming few and far between in modern life - and that's why I find so many of your vids are truly inspirational, Rhetty. You're a good egg, and an excellent example to others.
      However, I'm sure you've also found that community-minded folks like us who are simply decent, good-hearted people who are motivated to RAK's for others, and who give to those who need something more than we do, and who just can't turn a blind eye to injustice, and who move when things need to be done that aren't being done by anyone else, and who want contribute to our communities to make them better places .. we'll, I'm sure you've also found that people like us are quite used to being let down - over and over again.
      But that's what makes all the more important for folks like us not to give up, to keep on keeping on, no matter how often we get let down or even kicked in the gut.
      And I feel that I have "let the team down" on this issue .. For a while there I was like a dog with a bone about it, so thank you for reminding me that something needs to be done there, and if no one else will - then I should keep at it. TBH, I thought that when the Oddfellows chapter saw letters coming from the other side of the globe that they would be quite embarrassed into doing something about it.
      But I've made a note in my diary to get back on track as soon as our move to the new house is finished. I still have all of the contracts and letters on file - and I even have the contract for the USA headquarters for Oddfellows that I didn't have before.. So I hope to get SOMETHING back this time.
      I found it quite curious that the Oddfellows No. 2 Cemetery there is so beautiful - while this one has been completely forgotten. It's VERY STRANGE. But I made sure to differentiate between the two.
      I must go, but will catch up later.
      Thanks for thinking of me, Rhetty!
      Kindest regards,
      Janell

      I'm glad you are doing fine and well. With everything going on i just wanted to make sure. We have been well here. Sarah and I have wondered if we may have had this last December. All of the symptoms seem the same. 2 of our three kids living at home had it at the same time. 1 never got sick at all which is good because she is the one with type 1 diabetes. But we had it for almost a month. We would think we were getting better and it would come right back. It was very draining and left us with shortness of breath for awhile. Sarah had even cracked a rib over it. But since that was way before we never got tested. Luckily we haven't had anything since.
      Sounds like you really have been busy. What an overhaul you have been busy with. I bet it was beautiful afterwards though.
      I sort of gave up on this cemetery. I had the same trouble you did. I couldn't even get a response. I called, wrote, emailed and sent messages to news stations, the city, odd fellows and others. It's difficult for me to believe that no one seems to care about that cemetery. It's also strange that the cemetery directly beside it is so well maintained. I wish I lived closer and I would bring more awareness to it as well as clean it up. Maybe that city just doesn't like us outsiders telling them about it? I don't know.
      Anyways I was worried about you and I'm glad to hear that you are doing fine and have just been busy!

    Awe it's a shame people have forgotten the cemetery. It's like the people who were buried there aren't important. The people who should clean up and get rid of the old weeds. Shame on them! If they moved the cemetery some other places surely wouldn't have left the headstones.

    • @RhettyforHistory
      @RhettyforHistory  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      They have not moved the graves. Many of them were in a previous location though and moved a long time ago to this one. There were a couple family plots extremely well maintained. But as far as the weeds, we have to remember where we are. This is NM and this very common to many cemeteries. They don't get the grass unless they plant some so they don't mow. The ground is often very soft and fill of rocks. It takes a while get used to it but I find beauty in the growth. The bigger issue in this cemetery is what appears to be broken headstones and then clumped together. Also the counter company next door is throwing all of their scraps in the cemetery. That's a huge problem. Then you can add in all the trash knives etc.

    I would say from personal experience that the divided cemeteries are Catholic and Protestant. In the town were my Mom's family is from, the Catholic cemetery is well cared for and even watered but the Protestant cemetery just across a dirt path is over grown and broken. Most of the people buried there were poor or their relatives lived to far to take care of the graves. I'm not disparaging the Catholic Church or its congregation because there is no one who can cast the first stone; besides almost my entire family is Catholic. It just hurts my heart to see the neglect so close to the cared for...😥

      There are a bunch of Catholic cemeteries in the area. Many of them are just dirt and desert vegetation which I absolutely love. There really is no need to mow. It was the trash and mixed up headstones that I thought was sad in this one. The cemetery next to it, Fairview, and then Rosario are both Protestant. Right next to Rosario is Santa Fe National Cemetery and it had a lot of grass that was being watered. I didn't see any others with grass but I didn't visit them all. So I have another semi-neglected cemetery to recommend to you if you find yourself in California. It's called Sunnyside Cemetery and it's in Long Beach, CA. www.findagrave.com/cemetery/788908/sunnyside-cemetery
    It's semi-neglected for several reasons, one being that a former owner embezzled money to pay his alimony and buy himself a sports car, the other being that it's full so they can't bury anyone else there - www.presstelegram.com/2017/05/06/long-beachs-sunnyside-cemetery-steeped-in-history-struggles-on-the-edge-of-insolvency/
    People try to keep it up on their own and they even have movie showings and stuff to try and raise money, but even the city won't take it over because they feel there's no money in a full up graveyard, despite the fact a city owned cemetery is right next door.
    It's a historic cemetery and many of the grave stones are marked as G.A.R. Grand Army Of The Republic. Plus a large section for children - a huge reminder to vaccinate your kids if you want them to live past four!
    It's sad to see a place in the middle of a large city go mostly forgotten just because of greed.
