So happy for Citizen these days. Such an underrated brand. If you’ve ever spent any time working any type of job actually in or near water you’ll find Citizen is really the only “traditional” watch brand that has held up. Long gone are the days of divers and sailors wearing Rolex, Omega, hell, even Seiko sadly, but you’ll still see at least an Aqualand or an NY0040 or two on most marinas. They really embody the power of no flash, humble word of mouth marketing.

On the diver’s watch front their diver’s are still issued to some countries’s naval frogmen.
As for being underrated they certainly are. When it comes to innovative Japanese watchmaking it is Casio and Seiko never really Citizen despite some Japanese firsts such as calendar watches, shock resistance and water resistance. The international innovations such as the Citizen Chryston in 1973 which would gain or lose three seconds a year, the first solar watches in 1976, the aqualand diver in 1985 which I think is more innovative than the Seiko Arnie, atomic watches and solar diver’s in the 1990’s and most recently the 0010 calibre losing or gaining a second a year.
Citizen dive watches unlike Orient are ISO dive watches.
1960’s to 1980’s Seiko dive watches used lockable crowns rather than screw down, Citizen divers of 1960’s to 1980’s used screw down crowns.

@@OscarOSullivan not to mention the first titanium watch in 1970 with the X-8. The first water resistant watch from Japan with the Parawater in 1959 … even the watch in this very video can trace its design lineage all the way back to 1963 with the Parawater 120m, a whole two years before Seiko’s 62MAS (which this will inevitably be unfairly compared to). Hopefully someday a big visible watch publication will give Citizens history a fair retrospective as they really quietly pioneered a lot more than they’re given credit for. Till then they remain a real “if you know you know” gem in watch collecting

I've been wearing the grey one for about 3 weeks. No complaints on my 7 3/4" wrist. Perfect dimensions.
The only problem is that the bezel action, although great when dry, sucks cock in salt water.

For me this one scratches two itches - yellow watch and a 62mas style watch. Love those thick square markers. Mine has the same negative - too weak lume on hands. About the solid yellow dial someone mentioned - I think it would be worse for legibility. With this style, as it becomes darker to edges, markers are still in contrast. I use divers extension as quick adjust, very useful if wrist swells up. The case could be 1mm thinner, the bezel is too tall for no reason. And it's still hard to grip, too slippery.
There are negatives, but if Seiko made it, it would cost $400, not $250.

For those wondering : " Diver's " is an actual label part of the ISO certification, that means that every watch produced is tested for the 200M WR, compared to other dive watches, where a few watches are tested from each batch.

Bought the orange one back in September. While it's a great watch in many aspects, especially for what it can offer for the pricepoint, there are bunch of tiny details that bug me.
For example, the hands feel mismatched with the dial and watch size, like, they feel just proportionally bit too small (especially the minute hand, just too thin and flimsy), and honestly if they had just used the "barnacle diver" hands/proportions on this watch, it would been perfect.
While the movement is old, at very least they had the sense of giving it the hacking function.
The glass being mineral isnt that huge deal, when its set quite recessed and is somewhat protected by the bezel, but the odd "half domed" look just gives a somewhat cheap feel, compared to sharp beveled edge like on the SKX or the Citizen barnacle.
I have no idea if these watches are actually diver's ISO rated, because having had the watch open, the gaskets are pitifully flimsy, compared to a SKX...
Really just, watch feels like a discount edition of the Citizen Barnacle, but with dial colours that should've been an option on the Barnacle.

Very nice, but I still like my Kamasu, the sapphire crystal makes the difference for me, the size, and the price. Not ISO-certified, but I don't dive anyway. I also read that professional divers don't really use dive watches anymore in their dives, it's all done by computer.
Anyway, some may like the Citizen colors, and I'm happy for them, Citizen is a great brand.
These big name companies should make sapphire standard, aliexpress watches have that mostly, sapphire or synthetic sapphire is not really expensive these days, they shouldn't make it a feature only found in their top tier lines. Citizen did come out with a low-price GMT watch with sapphire only to be found in Japan with about the price of a kamasu, but it sold out so quick and totally disappeared from sales.

Nice looking watch , like this dial if I didnt already have an SNZH55 K1( 100m no screwdown crown) and a Kamasu (really good at actually telling the time, doesn't have the massive tolerances of the Seiko or this Citizen) I could be tempted . So close.

Hi Jody. Agree with you for the Kamasu but, I sold mine (with regret) because the smallness of the crown compared to the crown guards bothered me visually. Good Sunday. 🤘

I've got this watch. It's never off my wrist. On a tropic it's outstanding. About £200 for an Auto 62MAS/SkX slayer? How could you not? It's fan tastic!!

Personally I think the Promaster logo would make a fantastic counter balance on that seconds hand or to replace the tip of the Mercedes hour hand.

Always enjoy your reviews! This one is very reminiscent of the 62mas. Unfortunately for me, I have no desire to purchase a Citizen watch. This is not based on any factual data, just my own personal preference. For some reason I don’t tend to be drawn to their watches.

Mercedes hands, too big lug to lug, mineral crystal, it's a no from me. My original version Kamasu still wins over this, although I prefer the Boderry Titanium that I picked up on Ali which is probably heresy.

The only Citizen diver I seem to like is my blue Promaster Eco-Drive. It a great looking grab and go watch with decent lume and build quality. Every other dive watch of theirs seems to have something about it that is a complete deal breaker for me, and in this particular case it's the handset. I'm just not a fan of the Mercedes hour hand and the minute hand, to me, doesn't stylistically match the hour hand. The rest of the watch seems great, but unfortunately that handset just totally kills it for me.
But, as always, thanks for the great review!

Kamasu is good but I think the slightly larger Triton mini is the better watch. Out of these two I'd take the Citizen. The bracelet and ISO certification offset the lack of sapphire crystal.

    • @zephyrdan
      @zephyrdan 7 หลายเดือนก่อน

It's a tool watch, mineral crystal will scratch but not shatter, which is what you want if you're spending this amount and actually using it for its intended purpose, there's a reason why Citizen is so popular at this price point with divers and people who work in the industry

    • @RabbitWatchShop

mineral crystal, while more impact resistant than sapphire, will shatter. I know from first hand experience. That excuse needs to stop being used. Especially for this asking price. @@zephyrdan

I think you dont remeber about the better watch than SKX - Citizen NY0040 - 3:10 - 3 watches on the right. It is also ISO certifited and is hackable and hand winding, it is better than SKX and its avaiblabe on the market. Kamasu ihas sapire but NY0040 is cheaper and has divers extensions.

Maybe the shape of the bezel?

    and a display case back.
    So no worries there.

I recognise my bias towards micros here, I like micros and own mostly micros. But they are out performing big brands across the board. I just can't see the value in a big brand especially when at this end of the price spectrum you'd lose as much, or more, on reselling this watch compared to (some) micro brands. And Helm as an example is ISO if that's your bag

As a long time Seiko fan, and owner of an Orient Kamasu I was taken by Citizens Eco-Drive for a pick up and go timepiece. My head was well and truly turned.. I now have a mixed collection of 20+ models from Seiko, Citizen, Nite, Orient, Casio (including G-Shocks) and most recently Christopher Ward. Apart from the Casio's the Orient feels the cheapest because it is. It's still a great watch but my Citizens are far better than the Kamasu.

I think you can get a Divers 200 with solar quartz from Citizen for a little less money. I think that the automatic is a good price actually for what you get. Seiko Divers 200 watches are expensive for what you get, many over 1000 USD. I have a couple 200-meter water resistance watches but they are not ISO or pressure tested. The Seiko 5kx many are near 250 to over 300 for a low-end Seiko model that I think is grossly overpriced. Orient in my opinion is one of the best value watches for the money.

Agree with the remarks about Seiko, they're asleep. I also think Citizen makes great watches, but this one is just not for me. Love the dial, but the case is odd with that lug shape and 50+ length. It also might just be me, but the bezel steel color looks off in comparison to the case and bracelet. Great video!
