I'd like to construct something similar one day, using a VU meter circuit.
I have a couple of suggestions regarding construction. Preferably and carefully use a circular saw bench with a low set blade to cut precise grooves - perspex could be held in place without glue.
If glue is required to hold perspex, I'd use a glue that light can't travel through, so that light can only be seen from the edges of the perspex.
