I hope you stuck to the jiu Jitsu. If you have been put off due to this experience, I would recommend starting again but with a different academy. Where I train, we would never be allowed to spar after 6 lessons. We have to earn three stripes on our belt before we can spar, as it is really dangerous. If you don’t k ow what you are doing, Neither you nor the person you are sparing against gain anything from it, you don’t learn anything, they don’t learn anything and it is dangerous. The most likely outcome is that the beginner gets battered and/or injured and quits. The fact that you did not know to tap out when your opponent has you in an arm bar just proves that you were not ready to spar. My partner from a few weeks ago had only just gotten back into the sport after dislocating his shoulder in an arm bar, so you are fortunate you didn’t get a serious injury. It is a dangerous sport, especially if you don’t know what you’re doing, which is why you should never be allowed to spar until your instructor is satisfied that you can do so safely and that you have enough technical knowledge/ability. After 6 classes you should still be doing beginner fundamentals classes, then you move on to more advanced classes, then months later (obviously this is decided on a case by case basis how long this takes so could take even longer depending on the individual) when you have earned your 3rd stripe, then you can spar... and even then, more advanced practitioners should take it easy on you When you first start to spar until you get used to it. In kickboxing terms, this academy you are part of has done the equivalent of taking someone who has just done 6 lessons and put them into a ring with a top fighter to do heavy sparring. It would be stupid, irresponsible and down right reckless, you would not come back to kickboxing, you would quit after feeling your brain rattling round in your head and decide kickboxing isn’t for you. And that would not be because kickboxing is bad, but because the academy ruined it for you. I know you did this video a long time ago, and I wouldn’t blame you for quitting. But if you have, I would suggest starting again in a different academy. Jiu Jitsu is an amazing sport and is pretty much the best thing out there for self defence. Don’t give up on it. Learn the basics, and then spar. After all, you don’t just throw a kid in the deep end of a swimming pool before teaching him the basics of how to swim in a safe environment. If you can get yourself into a Gracie Barra academy you will have a better experience. I recommend you watch this video too, it kind of reinforces my points. m.th-cam.com/video/Sgb1Attfm-0/w-d-xo.html hopefully you stick with it. I’ve enjoyed watching your videos and I am starting my first kickboxing lesson next week. I wanted to have a striking martial art to do on the side to accompany my grappling. I’ve watched some of your videos and it sounds like it will be a lot of fun and can’t wait to get started. Keep up the good work.
Thanks for the message mate, it's been quite a while since I last did Jiu Jitsu but I definitely intend to get back into it at some point. I've been saying for months that I'll give it another try, but then I started training MKG instead and really enjoyed it. The problem now is finding the time to do all of these classes for different martial arts that I'm enjoying, and without becoming a Jack of all trades but master of none, hah ha! 😂. I will definitely start the Jiu Jitsu up again this year at some point 🙂👍
