I am trying to find out if there is any way I can watch the video mensioned at 1:56:30. I would love to see this documentry involving Danica Patrick back in 1997
I would say that both configurations are unique. The current Atlanta Motor Speedway is anything but a cookie-cutter, plus it doesn't matter what shape as long as we have racing grooves all the way up to the wall. I know that after March's race, the track will be repaved for the first time since it was reconfigured, but don't worry because it only took 2-3 years of wearing to get 3-wide racing.
Interestingly enough, the spot where we see the start finish line is the backstretch on the new configuration. If you look in the background on the old backstretch you can see the construction for the new quad oaval shaped stands
The new configuration has had some great finishes no doubt. But the old track had better overall racing and more lead changes in my opinion. Since the surface has become so worn AMS seems to drive more like its old self again. I liked the tighter groove of the old configuration more, but that's just my opinion. There was just no reason to change such a great track in the first place. I still don't know why Bruton didn't just put the new stands where Weaver used to be.
Man, these were the days. So many great HOF drivers in the field. I miss the days when teams weren't changing drivers and paint schemes seemingly every other year. Big fan of that Quality Care Ford Credit #88. Very nearly was his year for the Cup.
>I miss the days when teams weren't changing drivers Drivers were always switching teams in the summer. It was dubbed "silly season" and it sometimes still called that. Granted, the drivers switching hands were usually on mid or lower tier teams though.
I have an idea: How about if we revert to this & move the Start/Finish Line back to the new backstretch. & how about we go half-this & half quad-oval dog-leg; & give Atlanta's 2 races back to someone else but keep Kentucky; & also move it back into the Chase & become it the 8th race of the Chase in-between Texas & Phoenix.
Charlotte Motor Speedway was ruined when they decided to grind the whole track in 2005, which resulted in a repave. Texas Motor Speedway had its issues, they were fixed, then it started to leak rainwater in 2016, so they repave it, but ruin the track by flattening Turns 1 and 2 from 24 to 20 degrees and widening it from 60 to 80 feet. Now the biggest mistake that Atlanta is making is not repaving it, because they said they were going to repave after last year's race, then changed their minds. The surface is getting worse, and they say they will only repave after this year's race if the track winds up in a condition in which sealing and patching it will not be an option. Just repave the track, but don't change any aspect of the track except the pavement.
They just keep on screwing up dont they? Like ruining Bristol and they wonder why people r pissed had enough. If it aint broke dont fix it the mentality of these people drives us all crazy
@@donniebeadles7842 There is talk of putting Atlanta back to old configuration before 97 after repave soon heard Jr hint that on his podcast too get away from the cookie cutter crap
How can people say we need to go back to this configuration? I dont recall any photo finishes on the old oval. I'm not knocking it but the quad oval is more fun to watch
Robert Yates Racing was the winning team at the 1997 Primestar 500 at the Atlanta Motor Speedway, the venue of NASCAR's Greatest Race of the Century, the 1992 Hooters 500, where Dale Jarrett with his Ford Quality Care sponsorship defeated his teammate Ernie Irvan with his Texaco Havoline sponsorship. The 4th Race of the 1997 NASCAR Winston Cup Series in Winston America season and the 4th NASCAR on GMA race of '97 was jointly produced by Television and Production Exponents, Inc. and SilverStar Communications, Inc. and aired live, nationwide, and via-satellite on GMA Network and Citynet Television 27 on March 10, 1997 with a radio simulcast on DZBB 594 Radyo Bisig Bayan and Campus Radio 97.1 WLS FM

The old Atlanta Motor Speedway layout was much better than the current one
and the last race at the olde track :'(

I was at this race - first Nascar race I ever attended. What a blast.
Even Steve Grimmson horrific crash 2:200:00 glads he's ok.
R.I.P Dale Earnhardt Sr. ;(
Why was this race on 3 different channels?
@Pat: It was bought by DirecTV in 2000, which caused my grandparents to transfer from Primestar to DirecTV.
Thank god for safer barriers nowadays

Anyone got time signatures for these 5 hard hits?
DALE JARRETT WON?!!! YEEEEESSSSSS!!!!!!
2:13:25 Gordon crew member changing tires for Earnhardt
wow. second round qualifying. so long ago.
Phoenix like Atlanta will move the front stretch to the back stretch.
lol Bob Jenkins called Jeff Gordon "the '85 NASCAR Winston Cup Series champion" at 2:56:24
Ah, yes. A slip of the tongue by Bob Jenkins.
He meant '95. He said it correctly earlier in the broadcast when Gordon's motor blew up.

ESPN should resurrect THIS starting grid music!
Listen to the crowd at 28:00!
Come on ricky.. You wanna tear up the car and go behind the wall, instead of just going a lap down????

Drivers are the ones who don't want the repave at Atlanta

Did Bob Jenkins really call her "Donica"? ROTFL!!!!!!!!
I was There!!
*Face palm* Bruton Smith ruined the track like he said, Bruton smith made it into a cookie cutter racetrack

2023 and Nascar is basically almost dead, certainly irrelevant and definitely a very boring event
Quit your belly aching, it's far from dead. Yall been saying that for years
So was Primestar. My mom had that back in the day.
BTW, WTF happened to Primestar?
He had a deep "a" in it haha
And made it home to some great finishes.

Apparently I am not allowed to escape Danica Patrick >_
miss these cars wish they still raced the same cars today.
Robby Gordon qualified
186.987
They should have left the Atlanta track like this. The cookie cutter look to the new track is a big failure. Why don't the build true ovals anymore?
Original race date?
+Billy Bishop March 9th, 1997.
Great win for The Blue Quality#88 Ford thank goodness Steve Grimson crash with 40 to go
Ahh the last race at Atlanta before Bruton Smith ruined it.
old Atlanta man I miss this
damn atlanta looked awesome before it was turned into Texas
Bruton ruins everything.
WHOOOP there it is!! go carts.....
i miss her.
Old Atlanta was awesome! Why did they try to duplicate Charlotte and eventually Texas!?
