One of my favorite songs from the whole album
"don't ask me what your sacrifice was for..." man that always gets me
Ray Ruth I actually laugh at that everything like the entire Movie and sacrifice is for France and freedom and everyone I just think: ‘damnit Marius, if you’d lustende to Enjolras you would have known!’
Every. Single. Time.
So many heros in history to whom that phrase applies.
@@pinolief9635 Marius knows what it was supposed to be for. He's lamenting the lack of results. Effectively, his friends died for nothing and he feels guilty about it. He is begging his friends not to ask him what they died for, because they ultimately died for nothing.
Almost nothing. Very few people would even know about it if it weren't for the fact that Victor Hugo was in France during an absolute nonstarter of an attempted revolution.
Eddie Redmayne is so incredibly talented. He was robbed for an Oscars nomination for his beautiful performance in Les Miserables.
and honestly he deserved one for the danish girl
I love his voice, how you can feel the pain and sadness in his singing.
1:39 -1:44 you can really hear it there.
And here 0:00 - 3:13
+Aitana Sola SAME😂😂
SAME
It's very easy because I have done it may time and I have done it many times with this song
Guide to watching Les Miserables:
1. watch it 10+ times
2. Sing along
3. Love all the actors and their performance
4. Get to the end
5. Get the feels
6. Lie down
7. Try not to cry
8. Cry so much you can make ten huge rivers ;-;
9. Smile when it has ended to make yourself happy again
10. Punch a wall to feel manly again (Optional)
Congratulations! You have now completed the guide to watching Les Miserables! For other 'guides', try (insert random movie guide here)
I do the same exact thing! ❤️🇫🇷✊🏻😭
*bonus* read the book
Castiel The Angel of the Lord Assuming books are generally better than the movie-adaptation, I figure reading Miserable feels like either:
having your gut punched twice by both God and the Devil, (other dieties(?)/creatures if you are not Christian) while tears are running down your cheeks in pain
or:
having your gut twisted, only to then be kicked or punched somewhere multiple times, while the tears are running down your cheeks in pain. Am I close or far?
Also the guide to watching Doctor Who and The Good Dinosaur((It's surprisingly sad)), and reading Warriors.
Well, don't we all have lovely, cheerful minds.
AbbRunner Oh yes we do indeed have cheerful minds.
And I agree with you on Doctor Who
Freind:why do you listen to that if it makes you sad?
Me:
Me:
Me:you can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness
Lara Domleo-Robertson the hymn tune *Kingsfold* by Rafe Vaughan Williams makes me feel the same way as this song. I listen to it even though the melody makes me sad. The only difference between this and Kingsfold is: in this case, the lyrics and music are both sad, but the lyrics to the hymn tune Kingsfold are not sad even though the melody is.
Lara Domleo-Robertson like resignation to the end, always the end
That's why I listen to this and the hymn tune "Kingsfold". But most of the time I prefer to listen to happy music. I am a sad person by nature; *sad music MAKES ME EVEN SADDER*
Um two words; Eddie Redmayne
Me with Hamilton Be More Chill Dear Evan Hansen and Heathers
In my opinion, this song and I Dreamed A Dream were so much better in the movie than in the musical. Instead of belting the words out, this version makes him seem much more grief-stricken and traumatized, which is exactly how Marius should be in this situation. Him and Anne's singing was fantastic, don't get me wrong, but they seemed much more focused on conveying the deep and raw emotion of the characters instead of just trying to sound good.
I'm actually researching the June Rebellion of 1832 for a paper, and Marius is similar to some of the men that survived-at least until they were sent to prison- the barricade massacre, one in particular WHILE in prison wrote letters to his sister about the whole ordeal. His name was Jeanne Charles, I'm almost certain Victor Hugo even made a mention of him too. Movies must be dramatic, and heck yes it is super painful to watch Les Mis, let alone JUST this scene knowing what historically happened to the men of the barricades in 1832.
I think you´re right. There are parts that sound better in the musical version, like for example at the end of the day (just my opinion) but these super sad and also kinda silent moments are portraied much better in the film. I also like Annes part in lovely ladys better because you could hear how desperate and broken Fantine was. Same goes with a little fall of rain. i think you could basically hear Eponine dying with each line that she sung, thus becoming weaker and not being able to keep up a strong voice
Agreed
But trying to sound good makes you sound better. That's why I more like the musical versions
I agree
This scene brings me to tears everytime because you see how heartbroken he is as he sits where all his friends sat, and now they are dead...I lost a close friend in high school and it reminded me that she never got to graduate and live the life she could have wanted..
Jackskellington9100 I watch this every time there is a tragedy such as Florida on Valentine's Day (the shooting at Douglas High School) this song fits my mood after a tragedy. There's too much violence in the world.
Oh my gosh I feel you
"And tomorrow never came"
who is crying
craftbrothers *wipes tears* not me
"my friends my friends forgive me." SO. POWERFUL. I actualy cant poor Marius feels its his fault.
Eddie's singing makes me extraordinarily jealous that I can't get vibrato in my voice.
Spooky Scary I'm working on my virbrato I'm so close
BC twins same here, yet I'm still so far
willow bird he does :3
I can. Im 14 and I can but it took a long time and a lot of singing. Trying different styles works well (e.g classical, rock, country, ect.) Also musicals have tons of vibrato so singing songs from them works as well
I was singing this right now and the only reason why I managed to get the vibrato was because I was half crying. 😭
Okay so I seen this in a play and their scene brought me to tears. Everyone from the barricade had candles while Marius sang and at the end of the song they blew out their candles and me and my friend were sobbing
I was legit crying rip eponine and gavroche
there's a grief that can't be spoken vs there is suffering too powerful to name. les mis and hamilton, both making you cry for people that lived far before our time.
End of book six--Karaoke night at the Leaky Cauldron: 'Hi, my name is Remus Lupin, and I will be singing "Empty Chairs and Empty Tables. . ".'
Anneke Turner
Anneke Turner Not. OK.
Who said that was okay? That is not okay.
+Anneke Turner what the fuck bro
+Anneke Turner Not ok. Get out.
I thought the film Les Miserables was brilliant, I thought that the actor Eddie Redmayne that played Marius in the film was absolutely amazing, and I thought his musical voice doing the song Empty Chairs at Empty Tables, and I thought he has got a great amazing voice ever. And a great talent.
NOBODY TOLD ME NEWT COULD SING LIKE AN ANGEL!!!!
Wth. I just noticed! 😂
apparently an angel of death
Scamander
Lafayette thinking about Alex, John, and Hercules since he was the last to die of the four.
Enjolras singing "tomorrow there'll be more of us" as he raised the red flag
He kept very busy. To the Americans, he's a national hero who has a monument or street name or a plaza in practically every major city.
To the French, he is a... complicated figure.
He only knew Hamilton, I’m pretty sure.
someone should say that
secret rose why would you do this now I’m even more sad :(
why are those chair and tables not on the barricade Marius?? YOU HAD ONE JOB
one job!!
Those chairs and tables could've saved them!
....... *feels bad for laughing*
Now Marius has a fear of tables and chairs. He and Cosette and their son Jean-Luc eat in bed.
empty chairs (no one sitting in the chairs) and empty tables because they were used for barricades so theyre empty or not there. So Marius is singing about empty chairs surrounding no tables
The expression he put into his soul and passed through his voice is impressive!
the whole movie kills me everytime
In a movie where everyone but 2 of the main characters die, I think the term "Kill" is appropriate
Counselor Gallius Rax Oh right...Eponine...and Enjolras....and Gavroche...they all...they...
*WHYYYYYYY?*
And so did it killed the main cast.
Oh dear lord the feels... **starts crying**
Same!
try with video....... th-cam.com/video/5UIiKQnsi_g/w-d-xo.html
*Trys not to cry*
*Cries a lot *
bob bob Me too. I listen to this song when I need to cry my heart out
Gets me every single time, when it comes on Pandora, watch out.
Even more proof at how amazing an actor Eddie Redmayne is. Literally brought me to tears.
Should had been up for the Best Supporting Actor Oscar for this scene
for his age he sounds much older, thats pretty damn awesome, he got awesome voice too :)
Yeah I did not expect his voice
Even while crying, he sounds like an angel 😢
Isn't he the one who also acted as Newt in fantastic beasts and where to find them?
Madam Initiation yes
+Lauryn Walker im totally not screaming😂 I knew it i just thought my eyes were decieving me
Madam Initiation he is
Madam Initiation they weren't :3 our hufflepuff Eddie has the voice of an angel
Yeah
this song takes me back to a drama club showcase where my friend jake made me run out crying because he sang this so well
This reminds me of revisiting my high school's theater the year after I graduated. So many of my friends were gone, and it only got worse as time went on.
"Oh my friends, my friends, forgive me, that I live and you are gone." Remus Lupin anyone?
Edit: i made this 4 years ago why did it blow up?
no NO NO NO. YOUR MAKING ME CRY EVEN MORE
o.m.g. yes, right in the feels
*casually lies down, tries not to cry, cries a lot*
thanks for making me cry
YOU ARE TERRIBLE
"Here they sang about tomorrow, and tomorrow never came"
I'm feeling the mood guys...😭😭😭😭😭
‘’Here they talked about tomorrow and Tomorrow never came’’ always gets me
I decided to put this on because I hadn't heard it in forever. As soon as it started, I was instantly in tears.
It always makes me wanna cry.....
I regret having said that this film was boring, the first time I saw it...... But then Marius arrived with this song and..... I LOVED IT!!
And I cried. I cried very very much. I admit it. I cried. Manly tears, guys
Probably one of the most tear jerkers ever.
I had 8 friends die in last 2 years. I am only 48 yrs old. I LOVE THE PASSION of the way he sings with every part of his soul!! There is no part of him not IN THIS rendition. I miss Scott, Rob, Bob, Vinnie, Dave to name a few..... I am crying my eyes out, sitting in a chair you each sat in for hundreds of hours when you were alive. I allow myself to be sad. But I pray you are in heaven and if so My friends, My friends we shall sit together again!!!! Amen
Eddie Redmayne sings this so amazingly that it makes me cry every time
This song right here convinced me that, if there is ever a second attempt on a Phantom of the Opera movie, Eddie would be perfect as the Phantom.
Anyone think Newt should sing in the Fantastic Beasts sequel? I'm thinkin like a lullaby to a creature so it's not out of place
Ava K. I would love that.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO
OMG YEEESSSSSSSSSSSSSSS
Yassss
Oh my goodness that would be so good because I well we know your secret Eddie
definitly in love with this song
Fanny CLM so,..3 years passed. What Do You Think Still xD
Wow, his vibrato is amazing!!
I am literally crying, this is FAB! So many emotions, heart-breaking...
literally only one lmao
I Agree with you
Search blacklicks back - alright
(It's a better version of this)
I saw Les Mis yesterday and as I listened to this sing, I broke down in tears for the lives lost in the Florida Stoneman Douglas shooting. So many students and teachers who will not return to their chairs and tables at school or at home. Empty chairs at empty tables where our friends will sing no more.
my thoughts as well.
Al Massinger exactly! I'm glad I am not the only one who notices the similarities.
I love this song, always makes me cry
Same
You're not the only one.
ChloeGeekLyricsandmore, listen in french, is worse.
this song displays the pain and sorrow so well...
Friend played this song for me class....
...COMPLETELY BROKE DOWN!!!!
Come home, play song 1000 times over.
Eddie's voice when he sings...so beautiful. Powerful and Strong, Moving and full of feels
why do I watch this, it makes me cry everytime!!!
There's a grief that can't be spoken,
There's a pain goes on and on.
Empty chairs at empty tables,
Now my friends are dead and gone.
Here they talked of revolution,
Here it was they lit the flame,
Here they sang about tomorrow and tomorrow never came.
From the table in the corner,
They could see a world reborn,
And they rose with voices ringing,
And I can hear them now
The very words that they have sung
Became their last communion
On this lonely barricade, at dawn.
Oh my friends, my friends forgive me
That I live and you are gone
There's a grief that can't be spoken,
And there's a pain goes on and on
Phantom faces at the window,
Phantom shadows on the floor,
Empty chairs at empty tables where my friends will meet no more.
Oh my friends, my friends don't ask me
What your sacrifice was for
Empty chairs at empty tables
Where my friend will sing no more.
the feels in this song omg >.< and daimn he is so talanted
IKR!!!
Eddie your voice is truly wonderful, i focus on the music, on your voice and even if I only listen to the song, I can picture what's going on through your voice. you are truly talented, keep singing my friend
-from a fellow hufflepuff
Luna
I'm a Gryffindor but yes Newt you are THE BEST HUFFLEPUFF and I agree with Luna
Beautiful and so relevant still remembering lives and loved ones lost and the guilt of being left behind
Pictures Steve Rogers singing this. Cries for days.
IT'S A MARVEL FAN. YAAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYYY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I literally came here from a mcu crack vid. I was like, "oh this song sounds good." Now I'm crying bc poor Cap my bby oml.
YES SOMEONE ELSE THINKS SO
after seeing End Game, this post hurts even more
One does not simply turn off Empty Chairs at Empty Tables
+Kylie Palmer One does not simply turn of any Les Miserables song at all.
+Butterfly257 One does not simply ignore an opportutinty to watch Les Miserables
+Naja Hansen One does not simply stop thinking about Les Miserables .
+Butterfly257 one dies not simply disagree with what you said
+Naja Hansen One also does not simply say that Les Miserables isn't a good movie (ahem, CinemaSins people)
I love this song, but it is so sad.
Same
I love it but it makes me cry, just like the hymn tune Kingsfold.
everyone does
I watched Les Miserables with my dad. This was by far my most favorite song. Very emotional, very deep, very sad... I literally cried when I was there. That's something that just doesn't happen to me.
Gives me goosebumps everytime!! Gosh it's so moving!
Just WOW. So emotional. Never thought a film could ever make me actually feel the emotions of the characters like les mis does.
I'm singing this song in a show soon and I'm never gonna be as good as this, holy shit Eddie rocked it
a friend of mine sung this at his last year of highschool, done a fantastic job,
I've seen the play many times over but never cried at this song. On christmas day for the first day i cried for this song. for the first time i felt the emotion for this song, no other actor has done that eddie did such a wonderful job i would love to see more from him.
I've listened to this about 100 times and it still makes me cry ;-;
So depressing and inspiring at the same time
amazing that this whole movie was live...no autotune or anything...amazing!
“the sun will come out tomorrow” “ tomorrow never came”
I cried sm during this song. also when jean died that was so sad
JEAN VALJEAN
He really got a beautiful singing voice. Oh how I wish he could do more musicals!
this song gets me every time i watch it. its just beautiful.
Beautiful, I feel like I'm going to cry
This is my favorite song from the musical, brilliant
Goddamnit Eddie stop being so fucking perfect! My poor little heart can't take it!
This is my favorite song of the whole movie
one of the most famous songs from les mis and he definitely did it justice. his voice is absolutely amazing.
This song never fails to make me a crying mess
This song perfectly sums up 2020.
This Is Amazing, I Watched Les Miserables For The First Time Recently, And People Say He Doesn't Sing it good, But Tbh, This is my new fave song and I think he sings it rlly good :3
This doesn't get enough recognition, Eddie doesn't get enough recognition ❤❤❤
I'm so sorry to hear of your loss. Just remember that no matter how bad it get's you will always have a shoulder to cry on and to keep moving on. Carry on for your friend.
*don't ask me...*
Gets me every damn time.
Eddie is gorgeous and has such an amazing voice! I really love the way he sings this song.
My favorite song in the whole movie! I'm not crying, you are!
I absolutely loved his acting and his voice, he truly is a wonderful singer.
my friend died on the 28th...I cant stop listening to this
I love him and his singing and everything, he has really made the song come alive
When this was in the theaters, I saw this with my friends, and we were all bawling during this scene :'(
This song always brings tears to my eyes
Absolute perfection. Voice like silk....
The saddest song in the movie by far - made me weep like a little child.
And also, this is my favorite song - along with Red/Black - from the movie!
I'm can't stop crying while singing this. So much, sorrow.
When I hear this song, I always cry.. I didn't like this version when I first heard it, but now? Now I see it differently and I see how softly and gently Eddie sings this song.
I get chills from "my friends, MY FRIENDS don't ask me..." to the very end!
I love Les Mis so much, my school did it this year and I played Javert , and its such a powerful production in all terms
I'm just repeating what a Tumblr post said about this-- imagine that instead of Marcius, Enjolras sings this.
i love that part of the movie. he's garping and grieving during the song, so touchy.
i didnt have to cry the entire film until the line "and tomorrow never came" in this very song....
My mind: Don't you do it. Don't you do it.
Me:
Me:
Me: Starts crying.
This is a beautiful rendition, full of emotion and pain.
...I may have just listened to this six times in a row.
No big deal.
Empty Chairs at Empty Tables except every “Friends” is replaced with “bros”
You have cursed tgis land. Begone, foul thing.
ohhh my bros...my bROOOOSSSSSSSSS DOOOONNNNNNT AAASSSSSKKKK MMEEEEEE
There's a grief that can't be spoken,
There's a pain goes on and on.
Empty chairs at empty tables,
Now my bros are dead and gone.
Here they talked of revolution,
Here it was they lit the flame,
Here they sang about tomorrow and tomorrow never came.
From the table in the corner,
They could see a world reborn,
And they rose with voices ringing,
And I can hear them now
The very words that they have sung
Became their last communion
On this lonely barricade, at dawn.
Oh my bros, my bros forgive me
That I live and you are gone
There's a grief that can't be spoken,
And there's a pain goes on and on
Phantom faces at the window,
Phantom shadows on the floor,
Empty chairs at empty tables where my bros will meet no more.

Empty chairs at empty tables

I love this song 💕😭
I'm a historical reenactor and we've lost a few dear friends over the winter. This sat night we will remember them with a fire and spoken words. I'm going to sing this as the sun sets. Nobody knows and I'm not trained. But I'll sing with emotion..... I'll be fighting tears like I am now. Wish me luck
