***** About Living Traditions Homestead *****
Living Traditions Homestead is all about living a simple and sustainable way of life. We believe the world has gotten too “busy” and that people are missing out on many of the true blessings this world has to offer. We started as a small urban homestead in Gilbert, AZ and after the city grew up around us, decided it was time leave corporate America and take a big leap of faith by moving our family to the Missouri Ozarks.
We put out 2 new videos every week! Wednesday and Saturday. We hope you will become part of our homestead family by subscribing to our channel and watching as we give up the rat race and live simpler, more fulfilling life in the country.

You have given me so much joy this year, again. I'm quite ill and there is so much negativity in the world, there is a war raging and the politicians are arguing. As soon as I see the notification from your channel about a new episode, I feel all the stress disappear and I feel happy. I know that running a farm is hard work and you probably feel tired and stressed out time to time, but it doesn't translate to us viewers that way. So thank you two for giving me the pleasure to come along for the ride! I wish you a Merry first Xmas in your new home and happy 2023 😘😘!

There was nothing I could do about the politics, except vote, there was nothing I could do about the news. So I turned them off. It's amazing, it did not kill me to stop watching that news every day. In fact, I feel much better. The drought I'm having in my area is another story. Whether I'm being punished or being tested I'm just a steward and I do the best I can at my age.

As I was watching this video this morning I couldn't help but think of your "homestead" you had in Arizona. Sarah and Kevin, you had a dream and you followed the trail to get you there. You have grown so much these past years in Missouri. I've been watching you sometimes fail, but mostly succeed with your first homestead and now onto your farm. I don't know if you truly realize what you have given many of us...the desire to search for our own dreams. Thank you for taking us on this journey with you. I do know that doing these videos take a lot of time that you could be doing something else, but the videos are so greatly appreciated. Blessings to both of you and your daughters. One of my dreams is to meet you...a girl can always dream, right!

My uncle had a medium size herd of Holstein cows many years ago. He would name his cows even after he was obliged by law to number then. Naming a cow was an important occasion and it was considered an honor so to speak. I can still remember my mother's reaction when my uncle proposed naming a new calf after her. And I quote"Don't you there!"
I, on the other hand, agreed joyfully to have a cow named after me when my turn came.
I was a kid. I would still agree today in my senior years.

This brought back lots of memories!
Many many years ago I worked at a couple of dairies, milking, feeding calves, weaning, vaccinating, dehorning. Then I worked at a livestock sale yard.
Then lastly I worked as the herd manager and irrigator over a 300 acre cattle operation, with about 100 head of cattle. Calving, vaccinating, weaning and winter feeding etc. My daughter and I fed off a pickup truck in the winter, and I taught the cows to come by honking the horn on the pickup-they could hear that horn just about wherever they were on that 300 acres; even down in the bottoms of the creek!
It was so fun to watch them come a running!
When we branded and vaccinated we would sort off the larger bull calves, for spring sale. And again in the fall we would round up by honking and bringing them all up for the second hay feeding and sort again. The fall sort was more intense as we also would decide which cows stayed and which would either be sold at auction or sold for meat; and which heifers would be used as replacements. This sorting I rode a horseback and brought in a little more help. Sometimes all the heifers were sold, and the same bull was kept. Usually by year 3 the bull was sold, a new bull brought in and all the heifers were kept.
Lots of rotating watching, paperwork, care, planning, fixing, doctoring, dealing with loss and breakdowns and just plan old hard hard work! But come late spring being out irrigating and seeing the pasture lands lush and green, and watching the new little calves “high tailing” it across the grasses; sure made all the hard work worth it!
Praying for you all to have a very Merry CHRISTmas and a Happy New Year!
Thanks for taking all the time to bring us along!

Last year our bull, 2 cows and a calf escaped their pasture. We found them 1/2 mile away down a pipeline easement. Amazing what a bucket of cubes and a UTV can accomplish. It took about 2 hours but we got them back home. I always feel bad for the cows when the are separated from their calves. They carry on and on for a few days but do eventually get over it. Hard to watch and listen to. Love watching our videos!

You calling the cows took me back we had a small herd all hand reared in Queensland, started with three ended with seven, all named and just calm bar the little white bull and always came when i called them from way down the bottom paddock to the area next to the house. Lucerne square always helpful for little bull. I loved it all. When we moved they were taken to market i was crying as the truckee used not a square of lucerne but a prod, i interfered and told him thats not needed, they all trusted me and walked on board calm like, and my neighbour an old farmer who’d arranged it for me said i got the best price on the day. Well worth hand rearing

    Thank you for your video.
I'm so glad you good folks like doing that because as I say to the people around here, "That looks too much like work for my tastes".
I've done my share or "work" and now I'm old fat and lazy so I guess my life mission is accomplished.
    Good luck

I think Mr Bull is looking at life in the right way; eating, sleeping and having fun with the ladies. That´s the most fundamental things in life for all of us; food and sleep, love, family and friends - for a healthy life. In todays life many of us has forgotten this, thinking wealth and power is giving us happiness. Of course, todays society is built on that and a lot of people doesn´t have an option to live life exactly as they want to do, that´s a shame...

My heart hurts for the Momma’s and babies at first once separated, but I know it has to be done. They can’t stay together forever….but the crying…..wow. Hits my heart!!

When separating animals to wran get a Farmers Almanc and check the best date. It makes a world of difference in the noise. I have followed it for 45 years with animals and my kids, it works.
