Great video, I'm further north to what you are and in a similar situation with no agri. crops in the area. The deer have been hitting my fall rye and brassicas very hard in the last 2 weeks and probably will have nothing left for Nov. gun hunt. I was wondering how your forage oats and fall rye are now doing and if you think you will still have food by November.
@@regduchesne6494 yeah my oats and rye are both still going very well. Now this year is a little unique in that it’s been so warm. So the oats haven’t had sustained hard freezing temps. But last year my rye lasted until December after weeks of frozen conditions. This last rain we got really greened up my plot too. If you have rye, you should have no problem keeping food thru November. Good luck!
First time watching. I purchased my Buck Forage Oats from Amazon for $60.00 per bag. I over seed them in all the areas that are thin or bare a few weeks after planting my fall food plots. In the past I have used winter rye, but have found the oats to be a better attractant. Bob SWWI
I’m just a little bit east of you ,Mason Wisconsin. This year I decided to get some Whitetail research forage oats and mix them with the winner. Rye Clover and triple 19 I planted an acre and it is up and beautiful. The deer are just now beginning to hit, and like you, I will buy my time till he comes. I am so pleased with the forage oats. The thought process here is when the frost kills off the oats the winner rye will take its place.
I have the opposite problem you have here in Southern michigan. Good rain early august and my brassicas are great. Around the middle of august the rain stopped and we’ve had a 10th of an inch since. My rye seed is just sitting on the soil with no germination. Just broadcasting the last three years has worked. Awesome. This year I expected the same and did the same. Now I am kicking myself. I have a tiller for my tractor but didn’t use it. I will not make that mistake next year! I hope you post a follow up on how late the oats last in winter as I plan on planting these or buck forage oats next year. Always enjoy your videos!
@@toddweston2840 yeah I’ll do a follow up on my oats. It’s always unpredictable with the weather- glad you are finding success with your planting methods 👍
Rain? What’s that. Here in WV, we’ve had just over an inch since early June, and absolute none for the last six weeks. We might get a little this week so I spread my winter rye. No brassicas as it’s way past planting time for that. This is the fourth straight year we’ve suffered extreme drought. Time to rethink if food plots are even viable here any more. I’ll be concentrating on regeneration pockets from here on out.
In KY we get frost usually around Halloween or first part of November, maybe a little early this yr! So i plant brassicas on August 15 and grains September 15, with that said if your no tilling and just broadcasting you can probably start a week earlier on brassica depending on what kind of rain you have in the forecast because i got 1 rain and it didn't take off very fast compared to tilling so keep that in mind when timing it out! Main thing is shoot for that range and plant only when a good rain is coming, a little shower won't suffice!
So I did the same this year and it is great. I am curious, what is your plan for the spring. Will you mow it and plant a cover crop to keep the weeds down than repeat the planting? I decided to seed in clover at the same same time I planted the forage oats. The clover is coming in nicely under the oaks. My plan is to mow the oats in the spring and let the clover come up through it but with my success I may look at a different plan. So I guess my question is what are you planning to do? Thanks.
@@TheRangerBuzz I actually plan to do the exact same thing you are. I seeded clover at the same time of oat planting. Now my plan is to mow out the Ty and oats in the spring (oats probably won’t come back up anyway). Then I’ll convert this area to clover and do oats/rye on the other side of plot
John Komp of Northwoods Whitetails based out of the UP, in Michigan advertises forage oats. I've always had good success with his seed and he has good customer service and is easy to get a hold of. Would be nice to keep us updated on how long your oats stay alive throughout the fall with frosts and freezing temps. Also, as the oats die with the cold if the deer stay around and move to the winter rye . Good channel, I hunt near Bigfork MN so your experience very applicable!
@@jasonmeyer4587 I love the Bigfork area- that’s awesome you hunt there. We aren’t too far from you. Yeah I know he sells forage oats but I always shy away due to the cost of shipping. Thanks for sharing
You crack me up man. You remind me so much of myself when I was your age. I was doing all the things you're doing. I told you, You would get tired of the fence. Lol. But yeah, it's been crazy dry here over the last month or so. Leaves are dropping/turning because the heat, not cold. Ferns have all but dried out. And you are correct, there'll be a big boy show up, at some point. They're starting to move and get frisky. Makes me excited.😂 Good luck my friend.
Absolutely. Don't get the same experience from, someone telling you, or explaining, as you do from trying it yourself. I don't blame you buddy. Best way to learn. I was the same way. Had to try it, no matter what others might have said. Lol. It's all good. Just happy you're giving it a go!😊@@northernforestwhitetail
Nice work!! Never done a single plot but I’m sure there’s a lot involved. Besides up at camp I doubt anything would grow in all the sand we got up there.
I planted winter wheat and rye yesterday, like you said the oats are very expensive and not readily available! My thing is oats will die out in extreme cold and i need the cold tolerants to hold my deer through jan and February when we get really scarce on food. Im in the Appalachian mnts of Kentucky so its similar to you with the no AG, and we have have pretty high numbers to be in the mountains so alot of mouths to feed! Good video
Just found your channel, love your videos. I have been hunting public land in northern Wisconsin along lake Superior for 52 years. Different type of hunting than Illinois where i live. Love the challenge of the low deer numbers and vast landscape. Keep the videos coming, THANKS!

Just planted the same Oats plus yesterday in North Florida, for the first time on my property...hopefully they do well. Also sprinkled in some red and crimson clovers on some parts of it and chicory on another section of it. Fingers crossed 🤞
That picture in your background gets me fired up! I can’t wait for the leaves to fall so I can get out and scout some new areas. When do you think the best time to scout the big woods in NE MN is?
@@ryancarlson5438 if I could pick any time in the entire year, I’d say in late March or April- just because all the sign is still fresh. But my second choice would be in late September or early October. It’s really so critical to find areas sign in the big woods. Not just rubs or scrapes but if you can find fresh tracks in mud or fresh droppings, that’s a sure tell that you found a pod of deer. You don’t even need to find monster rubs or anything like that. Just find an area of does and you can be sure that bucks will come find them during the rut. I’m headed up to our camp in NE MN here in a couple weeks to do all my final pruning on my shooting lanes. Tractor Supply carries Plotspike forage oats. I've had very good luck with these. 50lb bag for a out $25...
The bag says this needs to be 1-2” below the surface. Why is that? We can spread them for a cover crop over our brassicas correct?
