I do the same, I use the backing scraps to make the binding for the quilt, it matches the backing and as the backing fabric is chosen to compliment the top layer of my quilt, it really suits it.
@@koalamaster101 I made a quilt for my goddaughter. Her mother designated it as her daycare nap quilt. Well it was used daily and washed every other day. I have never had a quilt come apart before but this ones bindings came off in an area. My sweet goddaughter had a minor meltdown that all of the kisses that I put inside the quilt were leaking out. 😂 The teacher had no clue what she was crying about and I received a phone call shortly after. Needless to say there was an emergency quilt repair. And yes she had to watch me blow extra kisses into the quilt. (The teacher was so confused 😅). Lets say I re-sewed the entire binding on for no future melt downs. Hence my recommendation is to use a binding with minimum seams if it will be heavily used and laundered.☺ Good luck.
The binding does have the most friction. That why normally the joins are on a diagonal. If you are using straight seams on the joins use a smaller stitch. For any quilt, after lots of love, it's not unusual to replace/repair the binding. I watched a friend replace one last weekend

Love how you show diagrams/pictures of the variations! I hadn't thought of or noticed focal points on bindings before this video. Thanks for the idea! I made my first quilt in December and gave it away as a Christmas gift. I thought it needed an extra pop of colour, so I used the extra layer cake squares and cut strips to make the flange part on a flanged binding. It worked out beautifully! 💟
Great tips Karen. Many times I have come to a join too close to a corner on the binding. Planning placement will save time fixing later. Echo binding method looks very effective, must try on the next non bordered quilt♥️🇦🇺
Brilliant!! I appreciate the diagrams of the different methods. Have you ever used crumbs to make binding? I've been using freezer paper strips to replicate your adding machine tape technique. I found out that "receipt paper rolls" are still widely available and cheap, and the standard size of 2.25 inches wide will be splendid for crumb piecing strips!
The main concern with binding out of crumbs would be how bulky it can get. The smaller your pieces the more seams you’ll have and the thicker the binding would be. I would plan to hand stitch the back of the binding if I were to do that because once it is folded over it might be to thick for the machine and/or running over that many seams will make it hard to stitch a straight line. I would probably also try it on a mini quilt first to get a feel for it.
I personally love scrappy binding,but haven’t ventured there yet. I’m fairly new at quilting but I’ll be sure to do one in the future. Thanks for sharing 👍❤️😊
I do!! I had plenty of pieces left from my scrap quilt. In fact, I cut plenty of them first, since they needed to be wider than my border piano key border strips. I figured out how large the quilt would be, cut plenty of length, then put it all together, and used big stitch quilting on it. I did use a cream color flange to break up the business a bit. I will be doing the same with future next scrap quilts. I love my scraps, they are memories of clothes and quilts I've made for family members, and they're It's about the only type I make, anymore, maybe supplementing with similar themed fat quarters, in case I want it larger. I'm familiar with quilt math, so it's easy for me to figure how much I need.

I used coordinating or contrasting scraps to add a few more inches to the middle of the binding in 1 or 2 places and line it up on the quilt. I have used it in the corners or on the sides. Binding scares me; I've done 2 crib quilts that were self-bound (or is that self-binded?), and 2 quilted cat blankets for our SPCA (wherein I learned that it ain't easy). I'm not as dumb as I thought! I'm making quilts for my grandbabies. I use the same pattern, a jelly roll pattern and from the 1st one I used scraps for the binding. I'm on my 3 quilt with 4 and 5 on deck! Thanks for your videos!

I taught Beginning quilting for many years. The first thing I told these new quilters was, “some new quilters come out of the class at a run, sewing blocks that are near perfect. Others it will take practice, but I guarantee if you love the process, enjoy working with cloth, you too, at one time will “be near perfect”. “ However, remember no matter what, your creation IS A Quilt, ready to snuggle in, or ready for a new grandbaby to feel the love their Grandma made to keep them snuggled, a treasure for always, and believe me, babies do not know or care how perfect the seems are or if the corners match.” Just enjoy the process. ❤

Karen, this is great, as far as it goes. But what do you have for those of us that prefer bias bindings? I don't want my recipients to have to deal with a straight-of-grain binding that has grown worn and frayed before its time.
Another great video!! Would you ever consider doing a series similar to your video “ memories of a churn dash”? I don’t have access to a guild but would loved to be challenged to make more interesting modern quilts and blocks and to get out of my color comfort zone.
Can you show how to do the math to add yardage as blocks to a block from a panel? I bought a Makower Hedgerow panel along with the beautiful collection of fabric to match. I would like to make large rectangle blocks and square blocks to go along with the lovely panel blocks. But i get confused whether to add 1/2 inch to one block when joining sashing etc to match up panel block size.....what did i get myself into?
I think I have watched most of your binding tutorials. In one of them, you had a brown tool for matching the binding, one strip was face up and the other was face down. The two strips were joined at 90 degree angel. What is that tool and can it be purchased? Thank you for the wonderful tutorials!
Me too!! I do a mix of pattern quilts and scrappy quilt. For the scrappy quilts I use up all the left over bindings from all my pattern quilts. Usually the scrappy quilts go to kids and they love the scrappy binding as well 😊
Thank you for this wonderful video on combining scraps for binding. Something I've thought about and maybe will try. My binding scraps contain a mix of bias and straight. Do you recommend sequestering those different types from each other?

I love a scrappy binding! Thank you for the new tips in Methods 3 and 4. I frequently use the backing scraps to make the binding for the quilt.
