Thanks for you channel, it helped spark my interest in higher end Fluke meters. In reviewing the Fluke 87V and the Fluke 87V MAX I found a few differenced that I have not seen mentioned. The 87V has a diode test voltage of 7.3 volts while the 87V MAX has a diode test voltage of 2.38 volts both with a max current of 1 mA. The voltage used in the resistance ranges on the 87V goes from 7.3 volts down to 2.6 volts while the 87V MAX goes from 2.3 volts to 0.5 volts. The 600 k-ohm and 6 M-ohm ranges on the 87V have an accuracy spec of 0.6 % + 1 while on the 87 MAX they are 0.2 % + 1. Subjectively the 87V MAX backlight is dimmer and the beep is quieter then the 87V. Also, the rotary switch is more damped and less positive detents on the 87V MAX as compared to the 87V.
28 II it has a design error in the rear battery door, eventually screw compartment is damaged by time lapse, rear door all time looks how is not well assembled, is becase rubber seal create that bad assemble. I sold 28 II for that mechanical design issue, also because buzzer and light are less than 87 V. Other problem is diode test, you cant turn on IGBT for example, because is very low voltage, even chinese multimeters can put more voltage. I prefer any model from Fluke, like 87V, 289, 179, really 28 II disappointed me.

Thanks for this comparison. Very useful to see them side-by-side. I have an original 87, still working. It is slightly smaller than the 87v. A wonderful meter to work with, feels like it was made perfectly for the human hand. The MAX and 28ii are bricks in comparison, but that's the price for ip67 and the drop height. I'm looking at purchasing one of an 87v, 87 ex and 28ii ex, all 2nd hand. I'd go for the 87 ex if it weren't for the fact that it's not ip67 rated, but who knows, I may reconsider the requirement for this. I've used my meter for decades in the marine environment, and it's still working fine.

Greatest meter ever 87v
Picked up a mint 28ii last week at a reasonable price, very happy with it so far. Love Fluke stuff but as others have said innovation is lacking in the last 10/15 years.
I have been a tech for over 20 years and I have the 87 max it’s a great DMM it like tank it takes a lot of damage and keeps working.
The most ruged multimeter is the old Fluke 27FM.
The 87-5 max / 28-2 has a lower diode test voltage than the 87-5. I like the Flukes also because of the diode test, because you dan test LEDs. I often do it at work when testing new PCBs. I donßt like to focus my view on the inside of the LED, so i put my Fluke 2 testpins. It works woth the 82ii/87vmax, but not so good as with the 87v.
I think that is because the 85v uses a 9V battery and the others three or four 1,5V AA.
I recommend lithium batteries for this kind of devices.
I got the 82-v EX for a good price. Once i wanted to use it again, it didn´t turn on. I thought low battery. The batteries were leaked out and damaged the plastic and the contacts on the PCB. Never again! This was a very expensive thing to get a new one for a good price. The old one works again at a colleagues home workshop, but no more "ex", because he has fixed it with a lot of work and cleaning material!
Fluke 87v is the best for me
Fluke 28ii is IP67 and most ruged.

I still wanna see how both the 87V Max and the 28II stack in internal differences.
I've had a feud last year on the EEVBlogs about that where I simply called Fluke Lazy for the 87V Max. I simply called them changing a silkscreen and repackaging a already 8 year old DMM (28II) as a sucessor (if you could called it that) of their 87V instead of a new design that fixes some of the short comings of the 87V.
I know that the 87 brand in Fluke as a mystical aura around it, and any updates should be well through but still this is not the way.
But it have been hard to find high quality photos of the DMM internals in comparison with the 28II, or at least the last time I search for it I wasn't able to find them.
So is there a chance to show how both the 28II and the 87V Max stack up in terms of internal construction, kinda like "Where's waldo?"
The only difference that I am aware of is that 87-5 MAX and 28-ii is the Data Sheet claims a 4 meter drop test instead of a 3 meter drop test.

Don't get me wrong, I still like my equipments (289, 54-II, 87V and the Scopemeter 225C) but as a old customer it revolts me that a company who was always considered by leading the innovation not releasing anything substantial in the last 14 years. Even myself been thinking of selling/trading my 289 for a 189...
And NO, their Wireless communication equipments are not an innovative solution. I've used them in a company I worked for and always kept reaching my personal equipment because they simply only work in the best of situations.
And now you say, if they work why change for the sake of change? Well, call me wrong but for me a new product or revision should introduce something different or significant to push the envelope, not what the 87V Max done, since it already existed but was called 28 II...

the specs show the 87V having a battery life of 400 hours which is based on 9v alkaline, alkaline depending on brand have a max of 550mAh with 350mAh being nominal, whereas the Energizer 9v Lithium battery is 750mAh and rechargeable 9v Lithium's can be gotten @ 1300mAh so the run time for 9V batteries would be greatly increased. The 97V MAX advertises battery life of 800 hours which can easily be beaten on the 87V be switching to 9V Lithium.
Yes, Fluke says the 87V Max using three AA alkaline batteries has twice the battery life(800 hrs) compared to the regular 87V that uses a 9v alkaline battery (400 hrs).
Your 9v lithium battery idea for the 87V is good short term idea but if you haven’t noticed, the entire industry in general is moving away from 9v batteries in devices and redesigning them to run on AA batteries for longer life.
This is because AA batteries have more energy output (mAH) which in turn means longer battery life especially in “Primary”(non- rechargeables) batteries. You are probably aware that the higher voltage of 9v batteries compared to 1.5v AA batteries does not equate to higher energy output.
An Energizer Ultimate Lithium AA battery puts out over 3000 mAh which is more than double that of a lithium 9v battery. With 3 lithium AA’s, it would be vastly superior in battery life.
It will be just a matter of time before all modern portable test equipment moves away from 9v batteries while sacrificing a slight weight gain and space loss for a significant battery life increase. Plus, modern AA formulations aren’t plagued with battery leakage like the old days and that was previously one of the best reasons to use 9v batteries instead. Don’t be surprised if the future generations of the 87V (87VI?) switches to using AA batteries instead.
In the Fluke manual (87V) they recommend using Alkaline batteries. Don't know why you couldn't use a 9v Lithium "smoke alarm " battery. However I believe if they thought it was ok to use they'd tell us. Fortunately they're not difficult to replace.
@@trialshawaii AA alkaline batteries from both Eveready & Duracell have still leaked on me, a couple of times still in the package and not expired; so I still don't & won't trust them in anything.
My understanding is that the 27ii is still being made for military that doesn't need true rms. The 87v max had slightly longer battery life and a little higher drop test due to a reworked skin. The release of the 87v max seems to have dropped the price of the 28ii. I recently picked up a new 28ii for $289 and it is a huge upgrade from my last Klein meter. it might be overkill, but if you want the best it will work for any residential conversation.
As Brandon says, probably overkilll. But you'll never need to buy another meter. I've used my first-model 87 for decades in the marine environments incl. Antarctica. No services. Still works fine.

Best would be the 88-V or 88-5. But many of the other ones would work well for these applications too.
I have the 87V and wouldn't upgrade to the 87V MAX for free, as it's soo much BIGGER. I don't care about the added drop durability; however, I do like the port configuration better.

Will be nice if fluke update the rubber holster to slim one , don't care for drop test . I like that the fluorescent buttons help in case of blackout , to know where you are in the room, give a reference point.

It is from my understanding that the Fluke 87v is designed and BUILT in the U.S., whereas the Fluke 87v MAX is ASSEMBLED in the U.S. I think the wording is important and perhaps that is why the 87v has Lifetime warranty vs. 87v MAX LIMITED Lifetime?

look theres only 2 FLUKE meters the 117 (basic work) and the 87v (more precise work). the rest is for filling catalog pictures.
Not really, 116 is is designed specifically for HVAC, because we need to measure μA.
