  • I love Japanese cars, but I don't always love the Japanese car scene. Today I look at a car which has been modified, but not in the usual way. I think perhaps this is better - and talk about why.

    Clarkson mentality (petrol head): More power solves everything
    Hammond mentality (driving enthusiast): All about the driving experience, the feel of the car, having enough power so it's quick enough but can still handle.
    May's mentality (purist). Believes nothing should be modified and doesn't mind old slow cars or new slow cars. Nostalgia. All about the character of the car nothing about performance.

    Nice car. I had the Mk3 A70 shape with a 3.0 Turbo, manual gearbox in Glacier white. Toyota seemed to think that the best colour for this car's leather interior was blue. I deeply regret not keeping it, the Mk3 seems to be more rare than a Lamborghini these days.

    Greetings. In early '00, when import taxes were still low, JDM cars filled the whole car market of East of Russia. If you were coming to city centre at the evening you accidentally found yourself at the car meet, which was similar to F&F1,2: Supra, RX-7, Chaser, MarkII, Cresta, Soarer, Verossa, Integra, Prelude, Skyline, Imprezzas, Legacy B4, Foresters and all other lovely Japanese cars. Many of them were heavily modified, racing from lights, drifting around roundabouts in winter. The sound of turbocharged 1JZ,2JZ, is stamped in my memory. Also, I do clearly remember RX-7 having fun after snowfall and shooting flames passing by. What a lovely era it was. Thank you very much for all your JDM cars reviews. They remind me of childhood and friends.

    I’m a huge fan of MK4 Supras, and own an Alpine Silver factory TT 6 speed myself.
    One honest question: Why do car owners in the UK leave their engine bays looking so terrible on such legendary cars?
    Oxidized, rusty, nasty stuff that people on this side of “the pond” would loose sleep over seems to be totally acceptable in the UK.

    I have an Evo 5 RS and a 6RS and both are highly modified.They really come alive with the CORRECT tuning.
    The 5 runs just under 700 hp and the 6 runs 420....everything has been modified and strengthened to suit the extra power and they are both a joy to drive, although sometimes the 5 is a bit more frightening than joyful!
    I would have no idea what to replace them with , if i had to, and have no intention of selling them, anyway.

    I bought a two year old TT6 in 1998 and still have it. Looks the same and not changed mechanically at all. In the early 2000's you were plain weird and scoffed at if you didn't mod your car; a modded single turbo car would fetch up to three times the price of a stock example. How times change, stock is now where its at. I am so glad I never modded my car. Its now worth a little bit more than I paid for it (index linked) as a nearly new car 24 years later. Absolutely bullet proof and no rattly dash.

    Totally understand as I drive a similar car, an E91 325i. It has the n/a N53 straight six producing much more music than power (which surely must be a very desirable feature). It's also a boring shade of grey with bodywork issues so very much the equivalent to this Supra.
    Sitting at an equivalent underdog position in the range compared to a 335i or anything recent with an N54/N55 turbo that everybody seems to feel obliged to crank up to stupid power.
    Thanks to encouragement from current pump prices I am achieving 38mpg combined whilst enjoying four adult seats and decent luggage space. Theoretically fitting a 330i intake with a remap would take it up from 218 to around 270hp so still room for improvement. But it's already a fantastic car that I would struggle to replace. Currently worth very little which takes away stress of ownership but maybe one day people will realise what they are missing thanks to cracking reviews like these...

    I know what you mean with a car being just around fast enough. I have a ford focus st225 and the previous owner put a map on it. It's pretty much perfect, you floor it and it flies. I find I mainly use about half throttle to enjoy the sound of it.

    ITBs on a MK4 Supra? Dude that is really cool. With ever increasing government mpg and emissions regulations NA sports cars are becoming more rare every year, so it's pretty awesome to see THE car that everyone puts a turbo on and stupid huge turbos at that being tuned as a naturally aspirated car. ITBs are just cool on almost anything.

    They’re a nice looking car and I had a UK twin turbo one in 2005.it was crazy quick as it had a map on it but it didn’t massively excite me. Very smooth comfy car but not a classic drivers car from memory

    • @bme9071
      @bme9071 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      The Nissan's are both more exciting cars. The Skyline is a road going race car and the 200sx a lighter weight sports car. The Supra's naturally a big GT car similar to the 300ZX and Mitsubishi GTO class.

    Nice review James! I think you hit it on the nose. May I offer an inexpensive alternative to the very wonderful and spendy MKIV Supra? As you most likely know, in the US, you can pick up a Lexus SC300 (Toyota Soarer) for $5,000 for a decent car or $8,000-$10,000 for a nice car. The SC300 has the same non-turbo 2JZeeee-GE as in the Supra, a very similar suspension, and a stretched wheel base. Oh yeah, and a much nicer interior. The back seats can be occupied by actual adults for short periods. If you need more power, opt for the SC400 especially 98-00 models. Some SC300s even came with a manual transmission but those are almost Unicorns. I've been restoring a 98 that I purchased for $2,400 and refreshing the suspension and leather interior. It's a pretty sweet car especially with the 18" wheels and tires, thicker sway bar, and new shocks. Yeah, it's an automatic but a manual trans can be swapped into it. The auto is pretty smooth though. I like it especially on long trips but I would love to put an Aisin AR5 (R154) from a Pontiac Solstice or Chevy Colorado in it. Watching you enjoy that Supra is giving me the itch.

    Given the open ITB's, I wonder if you should stick a mic up in the engine bay to capture some of the induction sound. To be honest, the induction often accounts for more of the pleasing "sports car" sound that people are looking for than the exhaust.

Im not talking about the price or the power, im just talking about handling characteristics.

  • @paulshort1027
    @paulshort1027 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That sounds like a nearly sorted Supra. It is good to hear someone notice a Supra is not a sports car. As soon as you buy a Supra you wish you bought the RX-7, but then the engine takes such TLC you wish you bought that nice, reliable Nissan, which lacks the sex appeal of the Supra and around you go again. They all take much dollar to personalise and maintain, thus probably ruining them in the eyes of everyone else. I would love my Supra back, if only so i can start lusting after a Mazda again. lolz

      I had a Soarer 3 litre automatic (one of several Soarers I owned) - the 2JZ-GE mated to the 4 speed auto really is a bit of a let down when you bury your boot - but it's still a sweet engine, super easy to work on and almost indestructible.

    My first experience of a turbo being too big was on Gran Turismo 1. I had a burgundy Toyota Supra which I had tuned for stage 2 turbo kit putting out somewhere around 600bhp. It was fast and drivable round a circuit. But me being a kid I just thought that "Stage 4 turbo = better than Stage 2", so I slapped a stage 4 turbo on, which gave around 900bhp, and the car went from drivable on track, to completely undriveable accept in a straight line, because the turbo lag was so great that the car had no power for most of the low to mid rev range. It was quite amusing looking back because it was an example of how having a high amount of something isnt always the most important thing.... the stage 2 car was on boost WAY quicker and was considerably faster on the circuit.

      I hired a Swift Sport at the Nurburgring back in 2010, fully stripped and modified (apart from stock n/a engine) it was so much fun and kept up with much more potent motors. You could redline it in every gear, make it oversteer on lift-off and somehow it remained safe and reasonable. It would still be a fantastic base for a road car nowadays.
