  • Hey Groovehacker, Scott here… hope you’re having a wicked day! :)
    I got my hands on a VERY cool short scale bass the other day… so, I thought it’d be fun to make a video about it for ya…
    There’s some things I LOVE about short scale basses… but equally, there are things that I don’t like too.
    In this new video I’m gonna share the good, the bad, and the ugly…
    Oh… AND… I’m giving it away… so YOU could win it! All the details are in this video.
    As always, see you in the shed...
    Scott :)

    I’ve always preferred a short scale bass. They always sounded so punchy to me. And they were so much lighter and easier to play. One of my favourite players, Mike Watt, is a short scale bass guy. And he gets an awesome sound!

      @@possibly8180 I saw Watt about 2 years ago playing with Flipper, and he was playing his new (at the time) Reverend Short Scale “Wattplower” bass, and he was rippin’ it! It looked a bit like the SUPRO in this video.
      I actually had Mike Watt and the rest of the guys from fIREHOSE staying at my house for the night after they had supported Sonic Youth in Glasgow in 1987. And Watt let me have a bash at his bass! The strings were like electricity pylon cables!

      I can't see the replies for some reason so someone may have already said this, but the fabulously thumpy bass on Keep On Running by the Spencer Davies Group was played on a short scale Harmony H22!

    Supro bass… my favorite vintage bass is a Fender Mustang. I’ve been a guitarist since 1956. Got into bass in 1993 starting with a Martin Acoustic followed by a number of solid body electric basses until I discovered the Mustang, short scale is all I wish to play today, switching back and forth between guitar and bass is much easier with a 30 inch scale bass. I turn 76 this September.

    Supro bass... My favorite vintage style bass is the Rickenbacker 4003 in Jetglo, Lemmy or sir Paul's axe. The feature i really love with this bass is the "Rick O Sound" channel. She is on my "gear to pocess list" since years now ;)

    Supro Bass.... I have two. 1)Rickenbacker 4001 - 1976 Jet Black. Love the sound... Just blows me away.
    2) Fender 1962 bass 6 sunburst - I would love to hear what this sounds like... If I ever get to play one I will definitely do a video! With a backup ;)

    Hey Scott, I don't know if you realized when you were playing it, but you can pull up the tone knob to turn on the piezo bridge, and it gives it a nice poppy sound. Definitely on my favorite basses, and glad to see you think so as well!

    Supro bass... My favorite vintage bass is the Gibson EB-0. Some models have banjo-type (straight in through the back) tuning pegs and others have the clover leaf that we all know and love. The EB-0 was one of the first basses I ever saw someone play live and that is the reason I listed it here. I suppose it has a special place in my bass heart.

    • @caiusmadison2996
      @caiusmadison2996 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've always been curious about this model, I've yet to come by one in the wild yet... but I can dream! Lol, I'm a Mustang and Hagstrom bass guy myself, and also have a long scale Jaguar bass, but have played many Jazz and Precisions basses, Peavey Basses of the T variety from the 70's (each cerved from whole trees! Lol no, they just weigh that much)and concur, long scale loses too much punch. The shorts live in this powerful clarity area I can't do without tone wise, and they also can make lines that just aren't conducive to joy when playing them on a longer scale live, or maybe even not possible due to stretch to fret increase on a shorter scale. I find myself wanting to play more bass than guitar, my original instrument since 94', since getting the short scales.

    why the short scale basses are not a mainstream? do they have any disadvantages comparing to the 34'' scale basses?

    • @bflo1000
      @bflo1000 4 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I'll go SS any day of the week. You don't have to move your hands as much, and in fact, if the neck is also thin, you can use the "one fret, one finger" method w your left hand like a guitar player does, instead of moving your hands up and down the neck...even if you have smaller hands like myself (but you may have to "stretch" your pinkie, especially towards the headstock). People w big hands that complain about the SS would probably HATE playing guitar, LOL.

    • @mexitegel
      @mexitegel 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I use a Fender musicmaster SS as my main bass, I don't see any disadvantages.

    • @skooterbrah
      @skooterbrah 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The ONLY disadvantage to a short scale bass is that you sacrifice some of the upper end harmonics. To me, that is not a disadvantage, because I prefer the low end punch when I play.
      I have plenty of long scale basses, but I prefer to play with my short basses more.

    Supro bass... By far Hofner 500/1. I started playing them about 5 years ago and fell in love. I've had 3 of them since and currently have a '71. They play like a dream, sound cool, and are soooo light on the shoulder during a gig. My hands are small and I'm getting on in years so they are also stiff. The short scale doesn't stress out my finger joints like a 34 inch scale. I rarely play my standard basses anymore except for recording. I just finished building a short scale Warmoth last month and I'm digging that. The Bartolini PJ set up sounds fantastic! Have done some recording with it and it comes across great.

      deadpool 99 absolutely, while I do like long scale basses, I get more use out of short scales basses because it’s easier to reach octaves and the necks are a little thinner which makes it faster to play notes. I’d recommend getting the Ibanez Mikro, it’s pretty inexpensive at around $200 and it works perfectly.

    Supro Bass...My favorite vintage-style bass is the Hofner Club Bass. I have ruined my left shoulder over the years and a few years back tried a short scale bass by buying a used 30inch scale Gretsch to see if I could play it with less pain than a 34inch Jazz-style bass. This began my love affair with short scale basses and my personal favorite to play is my Hofner Club Bass, the Ignition (inexpensive Asian version) series iteration of the classic, Les Paul shaped Club bass. Unlike everyone else that immediately puts a set of flatwound strings on the Hofner, I prefer to use D'Addario ENR71M half-round strings so that I get a tone somewhere between the dull thud of the hollow bass with flats and a modern bass where the highs ring through. It's the best of all possible worlds to me for bass tone. I'm loving your bass lessons, Scott. Not only the knowledge, but just as importantly, to me, your enthusiasm for bass shines in every video and gets me fired up to practice and play my bass.

    Supro bass...my favorite vintage bass is the short-scale Gibson SB-300, one of the more unusual basses Gibson ever made. It was only available for about two years (1971-72). It's the first Gibson bass that had single coils and a maple as opposed to a mahogany neck. It took me many years, but I finally managed to get a '71 in good and playable condition with a walnut finish just this year. Awesome bass. Fear the shorty!

    Supro bass... My guess is that the competition isn't open now but wanted to comment this regardless, I have been set on buying a fender mustang bass. Short scale too. And is very closely related to my favourite vintage bass. The fender musicman. But now I've seem this thing I am in love!!!

    Supro Bass... You're going to love this. Since we are speaking about short scale basses. Which I have quite a few of in parts. I have found one of the rarest short scale production basses ever. They are super hard to find but I have bought three in the last month for under $150 US. I missed one in the original case for two hundred bucks that I'm still kicking myself for. I am fascinated by these things. They're made in Taiwan for Harmony when they where going downhill. Drum roll please..... it's a Harmony H-906. it's some sort of mash-up between a heavy metal headstock hockey stick thing and a Ripper slash almost StratoGibson like cutaway body. It has fake humbucking pickups on it. I'm pretty sure they're single coils even though I have not tore them apart yet. It sounds amazingly huge. I'm playing it with flatwounds and with a pic. The low E is a half-wound D'Addario and the other three are flat-wound DR lights 95 to 45. I put way too much thought into these things. But I'm completely and utterly in love. I want that Supro. I'm a big Harmony fan and have buckets of gold foil pickups. I still have not made my dream short scale with them. But that pretty much looks like what I'm looking for. Pick me! Pick me! Pick me me me me me! oh yeah I'm also playing it through a Vox Valvetronic multi effect through a Markbass II head and a 8x10 SVT cabinet. You would be so proud. LOL... DWolfe

    Supro bass... Fender Modern Player SS Jazz Bass - they did a small run and released them first in Europe and then in the U.S. They sold quickly and now are quite rare. I'm glad that I grabbed one in candy apple red.

    Supro bass... I've been rocking on the sweet little 2016 Mustang. That PJ setup makes it versatile and plays really punchy while looking like a pawn shop Mustang that everyone has in their kit. Toured with it last summer and it held up great!

      I have gigged the 2016 Jaguar short scale several times this year, only moderately modded. New bridge, complete shielding. Great little bargain player. Really nice neck, for the price.

    Supro bass: I have several vintage basses, not reissues, and the favourite amongst them is the 1964 Rickenbacker RM1999. Not a lot of these about anymore, and it's never given me a day's trouble. The sound and tone is wonderful.

    Supro Bass...my favorite vintage bass is the Hofner violin bass, like McCartney played. A friend let me play his and my girlfriend liked it so much, she bought me one for my birthday. I have a nice Jazz Bass and a Ric 4003, but I haven’t touched either since I played the Hofner. I guess I have small hands. 😄

    Supro bass... Hi Scott. My kimbara Ripper . I was lucky enough to learn on it my best mates bought it for me in 87, favourite bass before it was stolen in December 2014 - 1970s Kimbara Ripper in maple ,even with it's broken neck what I would do for that bass back!!!- SO it's got to be the bass it was modelled on The Gibson Ripper . Great Channel Thanks for all the fab lessons.

    Supro bass... I am an educator myself, who would love the opportunity to teach with this little wonder! My favorite vintage model off the top of my head would likely be an Alembic Stanley Clarke, in coco bolo, ziricote, or another dark wood with gold hardware. Mad love for the 3 piece design, those deep, symmetrical horns, and of course the short scale! I'm about 5'2 and some change with diminutive, little baby fingers, and although I love my Jaguar, I'm really itching for a nice shortie.

    Supro Bass... I started with a 1969 Fender Mustang that I bought new in 1969. I let the guys in my band in 1972 tell me how much I needed a Fender Precision, which I acquired. I let my Mustang go. I've been sick ever since. I have short fingers. I wanted to replace it but they obviously are extremely proud of them and shot the price over $800. I settled for an Ibanez Micro short scale which I love and currently play. Please do a review on one of those. Thanks Scott.

    Supro Bass... my favourite vintage style bass has always been the Rickenbacker 3000. Sort of their foray into the beginner/student market, the shorter scale length, single humbucker pickup, and huge slab body, give it tons of punch and sustain, great for playing licks with a pick

    Supro bass... I've got a Danelectro Longhorn bass that I love! It's quirky and has a sound that isn't for everybody, but it whips my other basses all hollow! I really appreciate that you don't put downshort-scale basses, and treat them like toys for kids and newbies, because foe people like me, they're a godsend. I'm in a wheelchair, and a 33"-36" scale bass is just too much acreage for me to wave around. Also, unlike you, I've got small hands, and the 30" scale is much better for my short fingers! Keep up the good work, Man! You ROCK! - K. Brett Hetrick

    Supro bass ... my favorite vintage bass? Being so new to bass guitar I don't know enough to answer that question. I'm a poor Canadian boy, well old geezer I spose, 58 yrs old, who played drums in my younger days and always liked the bass. I finally bought a used Squier P bass off Kijiji for $75 and instantly fell in love. Being a spud islander, I'm mechanically inclined and immediately saw how easy they were to adjust and tweak. Being small handed I soon learned of short scale and wanted one. I bought a Epiphone EB0 at a pawn shop and instantly learned about their poor bridge design. The posts started pulling out on me as soon as I started playing it. I finally got around to Gorilla gluing the posts and also some toothpicks into 4 stripped screw holes in the headstock. As you can see I'm a poor boy and really need to win this beautiful Supro bass. The bass I'd love to have, and will be putting on layaway and throwing 20's at until it's paid, is the Squier Jaguar SS short scale. Sorry for such a long comment, hello from Lloydminster, Alberta, Canada. Please send me my new Supro :) Thanks for your videos. DennisO.

    Supro bass... Favorite vintage bass? 1967 Gibson EB-3. Owned it and sold it (auch) I only learned it must have been a 67 (or older) when I picked up a 71 in store and complained about the weight. Apparently, pre 68's are lighter? Also had a 1999 reissue Ampeg Dan Armstrong, a bit on the heavy side, but also a great bass.

    Supro bass... my favorite vintage style bass is the viola bass. I loved it too much that i sold some things and a guitar to buy my first bass (an Epiphone Viola Bass), and i don´t know if the bridge sucks or i did it, but when i hit the lower string it always fell off so i had to pull hard the string and return it in place. It sucked, i sucked, but i loved it
