I'm a Slav born in Poland. Really enjoy your channel and finding it very useful. I'm wandering if Slavs should take the same approach to the process of learning Russian as everyone else? We do understand a lot just by speaking other Slavic language but producing in russian is still not that easy? What would you recommend specifically for Slavs? Btw what your thoughts on Inter Slavic language? Thanks.

-They publish a newspaper and a magazine in our town .
{*present tense, imperfective; habitual action}
Нашем городе издают газету и журнал.
Nashem gorode izdayut gazetu i zhurnal.
-This book was published a hundred{100} years ago .
Эту книгу издали сто{100} лет назад.
Etu knigu izdali sto{100} let nazad.
There are even more verbs with the stem
To give
Давать{imperfective}
Davat'
Дать{Perfective}
Dat'
But I hope you got the idea. So if you know how to conjugate
this pair Давать/ Дать , you can automatically conjugate a lot of other
useful verbs, and that will help you to speak even more fluently.

In this video I would like us to discuss one verb pair that serves as the stem for many other verbs; the pair is :
To give
Давать{imperfective}
Davat'
Дать{Perfective}
Dat'
Hello ! This is Anna. I'm a Russian language teacher from York City.
It's very nice to see in my you tube channel.
Let's start with looking at the conjugation of this pair now
Please remember that the first verb Давать is the imperfect one the second
“Дать” is perfective. Imperfective means that this is a habitual action that is happening right now ,or happens usually often sometimes; so habitually or it used to
happen in the past or it will happen habitually in the future. So imperfect a
verb has present past and future defective. The second one is the one-time
action so it denotes the action that either happened once in the past or will
happen once in the future.
The verbs Давать and Дать are both irregular.
Давать is conjugated as :
Present tense:
1st Person Singular - я даю́ -
2nd Person Singular - ты даёшь -
3rd Person Singular - он/a даёт -
1st Person Plural - мы даём -
2nd Person Plural - вы даёте -
3rd Person Plural - они даю́т
If we conjugate the second verb “Дать” {the perfective verb form},
you will get future tense. Please remember that by conjugating the perfective form you don't need the word Буду { Budo} ;you automatically get the future tense because perfective verbs do not have present .
So , I will give is :
Future Tense
1st Person Singular - я да́мm
2nd Person Singular- ты да́шьa
3rd Person Singular- он/a да́стs
1st Person Plural- мы дади́мt
2nd Person Plural- вы дади́теe
3rd Person Plural- они даду́тr
As you can see this verb is pretty irregular. So you just have to memorize the forms. But good news, when you memorize the conjugation of just these two words you will be able to conjugate a lot of other useful verbs , because when you attach different prefixes to this base you will get different meanings.
For example
-To sell
продавать / продать
[prah-dah-VAHT' / prah-DAHT']
-To give something back
отдавать / отдать
[aht-dah-VAHT' / aht-DAHT']
-To pass/ (to give, hand over, pass; to broadcast, transmit; to reproduce, render; to convey; to transfer)
передавать / передать
[pyeh-ree-dah-VAHT' / pyeh-ree-DAHT']
-To let out somebody’s secret/to reveal/marry off
Выдавать /Выдать
Vydavat'/Vydat'
-To betray
предавать / предать
[pree-dah-VAHT' / pree-DAHT']

Etc…
So I would like us to look at a few verbs that can be
formed using this base :
1.
To sell
продавать / продать
[prah-dah-VAHT' / prah-DAHT']
Simply attach the ПРO { pro } and the conjugation will be the same :
-I sell
Я продаю́
YA prodayú
-You sell
Ты продаёшь
Ty prodayosh'
-He/she sells
Он /она продаёт
On /ona prodayot
If you want to get the one time future :
-I will sell
Я продам
YA prodam
-You will sell
Ты продашь
Ty prodash'
-He/She will sell
Он/a продаст
On/a prodast
As you can see ,I'm following the conjugation of the perfected form.
For example :
-They sold their house {past tense}
Они продали дом .
Oni prodali dom .

Misal, the correct phrase is "Я задам вам вопрос'. And no, you can't say 'Можно я задать вопрос', here we need to conjugate the verb. You can say "Можно задать вопрос" or "Можно я задам вопрос".

To give something back
отдавать / отдать
[aht-dah-VAHT' / aht-DAHT']
-I will give you the book back tomorrow.
Я отдам тебе книгу завтра.
-She will pay us back in a week /So she will give us the money back.
Она отдаст деньги через неделю.
3.
-To pass/ (to give, hand over, pass; to broadcast, transmit;
to reproduce, render; to convey; to transfer)
передавать / передать
[pyeh-ree-dah-VAHT' / pyeh-ree-DAHT']
This word can mean different things, depending on the noun it's used with.
For example:
-Pass me the salt please .
Передай, пожалуйста, соль.
Pereday, pozhaluysta, sol'.
Say hi to your family.
Передай привет своей семье.
Pereday privet svoyey sem'ye.
OR:
Передавай привет своей семье.
Peredavay privet svoyey sem'ye.
-To pass on the information.
Передавать информацию.
Peredavat' informatsiyu.
-He passed on important information to us.
Он передал нам важную информацию.
On peredal nam vazhnuyu informatsiyu.
4.
-To betray /to expose, subject, commit
предавать / предать
[pree-dah-VAHT' / pree-DAHT']
-He betrayed his friend.
Он предал своего друга.
On predal svoyevo druga.
-Don't trust him. He will betray you.
Не доверяй ему. Он тебя предаст.
Ne doveryay yemu. On tebya predast.
You see that in” He will betray you “, I'm conjugating the verb as
“дать”
He will betray {you }
Он предаст {тебя}
On predast {tebya}
It's the perfected form. I'm talking about betraying somebody one time.
So I'm conjugating the perfective form.
5.
-To let out somebody’s secret/to reveal/marry off
Выдавать /Выдать
Vydavat'/Vydat'
Again can mean different things depending on the context.
For example :
To reveal a secret.
Выдать секрет.
Vydat' sekret.
-I think it was him who revealed our secret.
Мне кажется , это он выдал наш секрет.
Mne kazhetsya , eto on vydal nash sekret.
-Please , don’t give me away!
Meaning: Don't tell other people where I am located ./
Don't tell other people that I did this.
Пожалуйста, не выдавай меня!
Pozhaluysta, ne vydavay menya!
To give salary/ to pay salary
Выдавать зарплату
Vydavat' zarplatu
The workers are paid regularly .
Работникам выдают заплату регулярно.
Rabotnikam vydayut zaplatu regulyarno.
To give /grant a visa
Выдавать визу
Vydavat' vizu
-Visas are given at the embassy./They give visas at the embassy.
Визы выдают в посольстве.
Vizy vydayut v posol'stve.
Pay attention to how I conjugate : “They give”
"Они выдают"
"Oni vydayut"
To marry off a girl .
Выдавать девушку замуж .
Vydavat' devushku zamuzh .
-Tomorrow is their daughter's wedding.
Завтра они выдают замуж свою дочку.
Zavtra oni vydayut zamuzh svoyu dochku.
To pretend to be somebody else.
{to pretend to be somebody you are not/ to pass
yourself off as somebody else}
Выдавать себя за кого-то
Vydavat' sebya za kovo-to
-He pretended to be a doctor . {even though he was not}
Он выдавал себя за врачом.
On vydaval sebya za vrachom.
