    Retired Jeep Powertrain Designer here. A little bit of water falling on the engine will do no damage whatsoever. The connectors are much more water tight than you would imagine. They are tested to way beyond what any hood vent would allow in. You could drive around with no hood at all with no problems, I have 2 large hood louvers on my WJ in Michigan. Have had snow piles on the engine, water, rain, mud. No problems at all.

      I went off-roading in my JL last week and drove through a few mud puddles. A fair bit of mud sprayed into engine bay and triggered a check engine light. Apparently some mud had gotten on the belt causing it to slip and set of the check engine light. I guess not a huge deal, but I was a little surprised that my Jeep was that sensitive to mud. Is that common in your experience?

    I did a similar mod. Used a 3 inch hole saw and punched 3 holes in each vent from the underside. I didn't even take the underhood insulation off. Just went through it as well. Just run the drill backwards while cutting through the insulation. Then forward going through the plastic drip tray of the hood vent. Done in like 15 minutes.

    Love this mod. I’m thinking of removing the vents with the mat installed and mark out the openings. Then trim around them keeping most of it in place and only drill holes instead of the entire bottom. Great work.

    I added vents on my ZJ and am looking to doing a similar mod if I get a JKU Rubicon I have been eyeballing. On the ZJ (5.2) I have noticed about a 5-15 degree drop in engine temps. With it getting colder here in Ohio, it only gets up to 175-180 at operating temp and that's with a 195 thermostat. I have see no issues with electrical connections, although I did put the vents directly over the exhaust manifolds.
    I could also see this mod extending the plastic's and rubber's life under the hood due to the lower heat/faster cooling. How much and does it matter? I have no idea, but everything in my ZJ is extremely brittle after 22 years. Also this should reduce hood flutter.
    I think I will try to open up the sides of the water tray to allow more air flow than cutting the bottom off. That should allow for more airflow and still let water drain in a specific spot. I might need to connect a rubber hose to drain the water away from electrical connections or the battery.

      @JLLIFEOFFROAD  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It’s worked out great so far with mine... though I haven’t measured the heat change... I know my feet used to sweat like crazy on prolong periods in the Jeep with the motor going... since doing this... tht problem has not reoccurred. I have not had a problem yet with this change... • @jlopes68
    @jlopes68 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I did a ton of research on this subject for the JK and came to the conclusion that if it doesn't help keep the engine cooler, it does at least vent the engine bay. And the loss of the insulation? Hmmmm i guess it's all about as important as a steering stabilizer when you boil it down.

    • @dirf554
      @dirf554 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I think the insulation also helps with preventing the paint on the hood from cooking off as well. I think he should trim out the holes and put the insulation back in. Just a thought.

  • @dio1982
    @dio1982 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hi. What about a water in engine bay? The right vent exactly above the battery. Did you protect the terminals?

    • @JLLIFEOFFROAD
      @JLLIFEOFFROAD  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Engine bays are designed to be water resistant... the only time a problem would occur is if both terminals are submerged at the same time...
      However if tht concerns you.. I suggest cutting circles in that hood vent to limit and control the openings...
      We have gotten a lot of moisture this year.. have not had an issue... also.. hood openings are an old concept for vehicles
      Hope this helped.. thanks for watching!

      Thanks man, I’m glad to hear it. But yes…. This modification…. I haven’t had a single issue with it.. HOWEVER if I could redo this…. I would take a 1inch hole saw and drill out 4-5 holes evenly spaced out on each cover… would still allow heat to escape, but would limit the amount of dust I get under the hood.
      But rain, snow, mud… it’s been through it all

    • @JLLIFEOFFROAD
      @JLLIFEOFFROAD  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haven’t had a single issue... the biggest problem I was having with it closed... my jeep coupled with an engine skid... it would get really hot where the pedals were... my feet would sweat like crazy on any prolong driving... since cutting it open... dramatically.
      If I could go back... I would cut smaller holes in the cut out piece.. like 3-4 1.5 inch circles... just to look cleaner... still accomplish the vent for the heat release..

  • @sambaker8640
    @sambaker8640 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    They’re just for looks. The cooling system is designed to work without the extra little bit of heat escaping from the mod.

    • @KTMcaptain
      @KTMcaptain 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      That’s a lot of heat and when you push these things in high temps with minimal air flow the different vehicle systems compensate elsewhere. For example my alternator stopped charging after 12 hours of trails in 104 peak temp outside. It would charge the battery to 12.6 when it dropped to 12.5. After I let it cool down properly it was back to 13.8-14.2 volts.

  • @KeithBickford
    @KeithBickford 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Did you take exhaust temperature readings before and after? What engineering principles did you use to understand the air flow under the hood to determine that this modification was going to improve airflow and cooling? Could it be that the air is intended to flow down along the exhaust manifolds to help the cooling? Just curious. Thanks.

    • @bskarpa
      @bskarpa 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I did when I did mine several yrs ago. It’s about a 30°-40° difference once cut. Measuring heat out the top was around 140° before opening and after was about 175°.

    • @KTMcaptain
      @KTMcaptain 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The exhaust gets cooled from air under the vehicle. Take a peek and you’ll see.

    • @Trickster310YT
      @Trickster310YT ปีที่แล้ว

      I did.
      Before the Temps would stay around 206 to 208. With highs of 211 before the cooling of the fan would come into effect. And would go as low as 202 with a few 201 once in a while.
      With the hood vents open, Temps would hoover 204 to 206 with highs of 209. And when the effects of the fan would kick in Temps would go down to 200, 199 sometimes.
      In conclusion. With the vents open, temperatures stayed consistent for longer periods. The fan would have to work less times to cool the engine down. When it did come on to lower the temperature, it would do it in a shorter time period.
      Temperatures would lower faster.
      Stays at operating temperature consistent for longer periods.
      Cools down faster.

      I’m interested in doing this mod but I watched a guy analyze the airflow while driving highway speeds. The air gets sucked into the hood from the top like cowl induction and possibly interferes with frontal airflow from the grill. Wish there was an adjustable one closed for highway speeds and open for crawling.

  • @markdarnell2792
    @markdarnell2792 5 ปีที่แล้ว +13

    I personally don’t see the reasoning behind opening up the vents, the Jeep is designed to dissipate the heat under extreme conditions, also the drip pan was designed to keep water from dumping on the top of motor causing rust and water sitting in electrical connections, etc. even old school muscle cars with shaker hoods had a drain for the water, I see several people doing this mod to their Jeeps without regard for down the road issues of water freely coming into the engine bay through the top just sitting where it’s not suppose to be. If this was a great idea Jeep would have not made a drip pan to divert the water, that’s just stand back scratch your head common sense.

      JL LIFE OFFROAD not putting you in the stand in a court, lol. If you want to have the water come in and it’s ok with you, then of course go for it, it’s your Jeep. I was pointing out if Jeep thought it was a good idea or any manufactures that have air intakes or holes in the hood to let water come in directly into the engine bay then they would design it that way, common sense wise they put drains on them for a reason. Even where you live and lots of others that are doing this it rains, a lot of water goes through those openings, it would be cool to see with a video cam going down the road in a rainstorm and see exactly how much water goes into and where with momentum it sprays on both sides of the motor, I bet if that vid test took place you would change your mind about opening up the holes. But again not bringing nothing to you just giving my 2 cents.

      What part of ‘let’s do stupid things’ ain’t u getting?? 😂
      Seriously thou, I don’t expect everyone to agree with what I do with my jeeps. But when it comes to heat sink in the engine bay... I’d rather have a more efficient way venting the heat out... spending my day out wheeling in 100 degree weather... I’m 100% sold on this decision.
      Granted... if I could redo it... I’d go back and cut circular holes in the bottom... just cleaner looking and still accomplish the same thing... thanks for ur input 😉
