It's a wonderful way to record (and I say that as one who spends his days tweaking cc and velocity data in a DAW to make tracks with virtual instruments). But why is there a credit that reads "Mix: David Boucher?" Was Mr Boucher telling the players to move in or out? Maybe making chalk marks on the floor? That's the only mixing I can imagine. Unless he was mixing a monitor mix, I guess. There's also a credit for "PA," so maybe that's it.
@@mattholsen7060 Hi Matt! PA is Production Assistant, typically someone who's helping to create the space to grab the take. In this context, and even if we're hearing the single M49 mic and not an additional few room mics (or something like an ETL Nadine on the bass), mix is an appropriate credit for the engineer taking that mono capture and doing anything from, say, hardware EQ/compression, to noise reduction or widening effects, that achieves the final sound before mastering. Since there's no mastering credit on this, David may have handled that as well. I've done a number of one-mic location captures and am always taking it home, running it through my hardware chain (a Pultec and a Neve compressor or LA-2A does wonders to a single mic and those aren't rack units I want to drag out into a barn, for example) and using processors like Soothe, iZotope, etc. to polish, which is effectively the mix process even though I've got a single mono source to work with.
I can accept that this LP didn't win the grammy because in fact, it's not the best folk LP of a year, but the most oustanding music I heard since 20 years. Stranger is the best song I never heard. Thank you so much Nickel Creek, your music is a blessing. The meeting between fire and grace, that Sarah particularly embodies.
The people who deserve accolades never get them when they deserve them. Sadly we look back on their careers many years later and give them their props. I saw them in 2001. I've seen over 50 concerts to date. That one is still in the top 3. I got to meet them too. I "Thank My Lucky Stars" I got to be there.
They have done well for themselves and are best selling artists. Underrated means ignored or unfairly rated, they are held in high regard for their output by the fans that sellout their concerts and the critics and fellow musicians that praise them.
The last time I saw Nickel Creek in concert I was 19. This time when I come I’ll bring my 9 year old daughter. So fortunate to be listening to you “for the rest of my life”
Seeing them together brings tears to my eyes. They are so assured on their instruments and meld their voices with ease. I love the subtle fills Chris adds with his mandolin in the quieter moments. Most of all, I love the joy on Sara's face. Can't wait for the new album!
I've really missed this blending of talent. Can't tell you how pleased I am that you three are collaborating once again. You've still got it big time Nickel Creek and I hope you keep going strong. Been there with you since the beginning and will continue to do so. Looking forward to the album release!
The refinement of your skills over the years is showing for sure. And the magic sauce of the three of you together still blends as well as it did when you were young.
Y’all were formative for my childhood and growing up. Your music touched my soul and has stayed with with me for 25+ years. If thank you were even enough to demonstrate the infinite gratitude I hold for your place in my life.. but I’ll say it anyway. Thank you, from the bottom of my heart, thank you.
I saw Nickel Creek in 2007 at the Tivoli in Chattanooga, TN for the Farewell for Now Tour. I saw them at the Ryman in 2014 for the Dotted Line tour. Looking forward to seeing them sometime this year. I love the Punch Brothers and I love Sean Watkins solo stuff, but they just belong all together.
Glad to see that Chris is still wearing that floral shirt. Also glad to see Sara smile so much, even if it does nothing to help my raging crush on her. I wasn't sure about the song when I was listening to the recording, but seeing it performed brings it to life for me. Looking forward to the new album for sure!
I fell in love with Nickel Creek in 2002. I was lucky enough to see them live in 2003, 2005, and got to see Punch Brothers a few times and one solo Chris Thile concert. But hearing these 3 collaborate brings back such love and nostalgia in my heart that I can’t help but feel emotional everytime they reunite. Chris made me want to learn the mandolin. I had basic guitar skills. Then picked up the mandolin for a LONG time, then the fiddle. Then the upright bass. And after Punch Brothers formed, the banjo. I wish I could properly articulate how their music and harmonies make me feel. It’s like I’m 14 again and re-discovering bluegrass/new grass. I can’t stop listening, and will ALWAYS be a sucker for their musical talents. And that’s not even mentioning the time I’ve gotten to spend with Chris and Sean. They will always be the sound of my true musical awakening. ALWAYS. When my finance (from Chicago) knee of them on our first date, it was one of the most telling signs that he was my person.
These three are ultimate music legends. Unbelievable talent and amazing how they always fit perfectly together in every track. An absolutely stunning lead single. Can't wait for the album!!!
So excited for this album! It's such an amazing thing that you have all been playing together this long, creating such impactful music, and still finding the joy in playing together. Hope these albums never stop coming. We'll keep buying them as long as you guys keep producing them. Thank you!
I love the build to the line "to move beyond/to build upon". At that point the song switches and it becomes so hopeful. I don't know if this song is about them in particular or just relationships in general, but from that point to the end, it just makes me smile to think about relationships that we don't give up on, we keep shoveling and digging because we need each other and life is better with others. So glad they Nickel Creek is back together making music and that this is such an encouraging song makes it even better!
so this is what happens when you take three talented individuals and combine them. Ultra Mega-zord talent. Each one of you have so much to bring to the table. Yet, at this table, you are serving up some musical Genius!!!! THANK YOU!!!
I was humming ¨Reasons why¨ and went on spotify to see if they had made anything new and found Celebrants and my world has been turned upside down! EVRERYTHING anout this album is bliss! Goosebumps and wide smile inducing. AMazing band that I hope comes to Denmark sometime
Saw you guys at West Virginia University back late ‘90’s-early ‘00’s indoors in the Mountain Lair. Fuzzy memories from that era but of course wonderful memories.
I’ve been listening to the live album a lot lately and I’m really happy to have new music. Nickel Creek are one of my favourite bands for many many years. When these three are together you know everything is okay and you are going to have a great time. Thank you.
How do y’all keep getting better and better. I’ll never forget watching y’all play in the parking lot of Waterloo Records at SXSW way back. Stunned me how good y’all were, and so happy to hear new stuff. Always find time to play together b/c it’s an absolute blessing to us all
4 instruments, 3 voices, 1 mic, 1 uncut shot! Pure talent!! It’s good to have y’all back. Can’t wait for the full album!
and the tapping sounds so groovy
@@feelinghealingfrequences7179 No auto-tuning here, my friends.

Good music

01:51 Sara's smile is how we're all feeling hearing the band back together
amen
LIFELONG FAN. I LISTEN TO THIS 6 TIMES A DAY.
I love this band.
18 new tracks? How are we worthy? Also, Sarah showing us who she is on the fiddle again. Can't wait!
Sarah's singing is so heavenly, it's easy to forget she can play like a demon!
Every time I watch this it brings me joy and it's great how happy Sara looks.
Criminally underrated band. Can't wait for the new album!

@@BrianOates I think they mean that they arent as popular as some other artists
That phrase always has to do with the speaker’s field of view/frame of reference.
2023 feels a bit more hopeful now that Nickle Creek is making new music 🙂

I grew up listening to nickel creek and now can share with my 9 year old daughter too
I was 22 last time I saw them, and I'll bring my 11 and 8 yr old. 😊
Sean is definitely the unsung hero of the group, his voice and playing in this are so nice 🥰
“Unsung” might not be the right word here…
some crazy hybrid picking
True. But the real unsung hero... has always been the bass player.

mind blown
Woot woot! So excited to hear another Nickel Creek album is coming.
Love the crack in Sara's voice at 3:55! Sent tingles down my spine! THAT's how you sing with emotion, kids.
Yes, it is! Take notes.
One mic, no pedals, no auto tune, just spectacular songwriting, playing and performing!
Facts! Amazing!
Wow . . this has me searching for tickets . .and I'm willing to travel . . it's that good!!

And Sara locking on those harmonies with I’m With Her!
Sara's dissonant note just after 3:48 gives me goosebumps! So good
been listening to this 100 times a day and that part still gets me every time

that flip of the guitar over sara's head at 3:23 is so smooth!
Yes! BRAVO!
I could not love this news more! A new album? Thanks guys! We've missed y'all!
Sara is so dang expressive when she sings and I'm here for it!

Angels hide just behind the veil of our world close enough to hear these humans make the most beautiful noise they've ever heard.
good as each of you are individually, together you are magical. I got chills from the first verse. Thanks for getting back together
SICK! JUST SICK!
nobody does it like you three. looking forward to March.
Hello beautiful 👋 how are you doing today??
Oh cool, I already know my favorite album of 2023.
Update: it did, in fact, take the top spot for me this year
So this is what expert level music theory sounds like. I love it, I am in awe of the talent of you all. Thank you.
Silky , intense, and beautiful. Masters at play.
Since 1989? Impossible! By my math, that would be 34 years ago!
So happy you can do it all again!
These three are ultimate music legends. Unbelievable talent and amazing how they always fit perfectly together in every track. An absolutely stunning lead single. Can't wait for the album!!!
so much hype for a brighter 2023.

Made my YEAR to see a new album is coming out 🥹
That mandolin/fiddle unison in the solo is just the coolest thing.
Beauty to hear, beauty to watch, beauty to feel
THIS! There is NOTHING like Nickel Creek!!!!!!
The virtuosity here is freaky! I am hypnotized

Wow!! As usual I’m blown away by all of their talent. Masters not only of their instruments but of their voice as well 😍

Hello Anna 👋 how are you doing today ??
So good to see you all again!!
Sarah's voice has aged like a bottle of fine wine.
Saw you guys at West Virginia University back late ‘90’s-early ‘00’s indoors in the Mountain Lair. Fuzzy memories from that era but of course wonderful memories.

I’ve been a fan for decades and this song is - hands down - my very favorite. A true masterpiece among masterpieces.
Amazing performance at Spoleto in the iconic Cistern Ysrd in Charleston SC!!
How do y’all keep getting better and better. I’ll never forget watching y’all play in the parking lot of Waterloo Records at SXSW way back. Stunned me how good y’all were, and so happy to hear new stuff. Always find time to play together b/c it’s an absolute blessing to us all
So wonderful three part harmony weaving through the fast paced and strident tune .... takes us with them on the journey. Kudos !!!
So far this is the best Nickel Creek song I've heard
My God. This is unbelievable.
