My older sister had a beta in a bowl and I noticed that every day it look worse and worse until I got the fish (i stole it) and immediately puit in a 20 liter aquarium with some plants from that day it recovered and lived a happy life and sadly passed away

an unattended big fish tank is way more worser than a well maintained fish bowl. i maintained a betta fish with plants in a 1.5 gallon bowl. she lived for three years. a full betta life span. she even trained to do tricks. i dont even like to see bettas in cups. but they are fine in bowls and vases. siphoning the waste once every three days is enough. fish dont even get sick

So easy to fake the number of years of your betta on a TH-cam comment section. LOL. I actually agree with you that with proper maintenance, betta can leave in 2 gallon tanks. BUT you have to be diligent specially to ensure the water parameters are good. Not everyone has the time to always maintain their tank. I only do water changes twice a month and it's all good because it's a 10 gallon tank.
While this may be true for the average hobbyist, it’s not entirely the nature of things. let me explain:
yes, there is no such thing as a maximum tank size for bettas but on the other hand, one needs to take into account the natural habitat of betta fish. Large water bodies like rice fields, thousands of liters but betta fish are territorial and each individual territory can be anywhere between 1-5 gallons (there are many documentaries and studies showing exactly that). Those fields are also full of vegetation, twigs, branches, leaves providing cover from predators like bigger fish and birds. This is what bettas instinctively need no matter what. solution: more plants. 60-70% of the volume planted (look at their natural habitat). Of course this is a lot easier (and more expensive) in larger tanks but it doesn’t at all require a 10 gallon. it’s important not to apply human moral standards (or worse aesthetic standards) blindly to fish keeping and to look at their natural habitat.
Water chemistry is an interesting one. While it’s generally true that water parameters are more stable in larger volumes, it doesn’t mean that you can’t have rock solid parameters in a 2-3gal tank. It requires another style of fish keeping. one without high ferts, without high light, without overfeeding, and so on. But if that’s your style of fish keeping, then you’re required to frequently do large water changes, just to keep the toxicity down… While this may be suitable for plants, this is no way of keeping fish and you definitely won’t have a thriving ecosystem! keyword: food web!
Look at the ecosystem 'fresh water' and the habitat of the species that you want to keep and cater to it. And most importantly: don’t let others tell you that you cannot create a 100% natural ecosystem in an aquarium. This is plain foolishness and it’s much easier and way more responsible than doing it any artificial way of keeping fish.
Ask yourself: is an aquarium just room decoration for you? do you just want lush plant growth and striking colors? That’s totally okay! (But don’t keep fish)
Or is your focus on fish keeping? In that case, do what you can to replicate the natural habitat of the species you want to keep!! And if you can’t do that, don’t keep that species and look for something else.
And they need warmth.
