Well, Tarja is the Siren. Tarja has that dark, magical sound to her voice. I love this story of a Siren who is trying to lure the sailor to the depths of the ocean with her. Of course, Tarja being the Siren (her having the voice of a siren) and Marko being the sailor (having not so ethereal sound, more rough sound) I love how the story progresses. All the while in the background Tarja is chanting "Come to me!" Definitely another master piece written by Tuomas❤ Thank you!!!
The lyrics there are a nod to Homer's Odyssey as well - in that Odysseus ordered all his men to stuff their ears full of wax to let them sail past the sirens without hearing their hypnotizing voices, but had himself bound to the ship's mast so that he could hear their song but not jump overboard and drown in his efforts to reach them.
@@MsCatstaff I have no idea where this jumping overboard actually comes from. Sirens in Greek mythology are not like mermaids, they are winged creatures. Creatures that lure sailors to them, or maybe better word is seduce, with their singing, and then proceed to rip the sailors to pieces.
@@jarivuorinen3878 True, but they still lured sailors to their deaths with their song. The sailors would jump overboard (or possibly steer their ships into the rocks) to reach the sirens. And by the third century BC, there were depictions of sirens as mermaids. From Wikipedia: Some surviving Classical period examples had already depicted the siren as mermaid-like.[8] The sirens are described as mermaids or "tritonesses" in examples dating to the 3rd century BC, including an earthenware bowl found in Athens[20][22] and a terracotta oil lamp possibly from the Roman period.[8] The first known literary attestation of siren as a "mermaid" appeared in the Anglo-Latin catalogue Liber Monstrorum (early 8th century AD), where it says that sirens were "sea-girls... with the body of a maiden, but have scaly fishes' tails"
@@Whateve909 It's a half-joke because Marko is the longest standing vocalist of Nightwish. :P If we're talking three leads, Floor is definitely my favorite. Tarja and Anette are both amazing but they don't hit the spot like Floor does.

Great pick ,Jeff. Yes, End of an Era was in Helsinki. Hartwall Arena Oct 21, 2005. Last stop on the tour for the Once album, the record this song comes from. I think you already knew it was Tarja's last with Nightwish. One of my favorite Tarja era songs. Song #6 in the set, right after Phantom of the Opera. Tarja IS a siren, she lured you in lol. Marko kills it in the sailor role. Love Tuomas' keyboard solo. Northern Kings is the band your thinking of with Marko ,and the 80's covers. Check out Planet Hell from this concert, more Tarja and Marko together.
Tuomas said he got the inspiration to this song from reading a story in a newspaper about a woman in Scotland who did go down to the shore to play violin and dolphins came to listen. Check out the lyrics to this song. We don't hear or see much of Tuomas solos, but here is one. One of my favorite songs.
Marco (Odyssy) tied his hand to the wheel in order to resist the tempting call of the Sirens while Tarja (Siren) sings "come to me". Tuomas has studied Greek mythology and tales of Odyssy well. Most of the seamen met their destiny. They also perform this tale so well.
The thing about Nightwish is that you can hear 30 songs made by them, and then you listen to another one, and it´s still incredible!! That´s just insane!
I memtioned elsrwhere and we will seenin later solo concerts where Tarja has a full orchestra and choir backing her. It feels like a cheat mode for a video game. Her years of training in Lied or chamber music pay off im spades. You might have heard after 18 years from this show Tarja and Marko joined forces on stage for The Phantom of the Opera. In Switzerland in July and Finland in August 2023. The chemistry and deep friendship has been rekindled. Marko seems happier and healthier after his health problems the last some years. The magic is still there. As for Tarja she has continued to study, to practice and grow. She can still belt and create.a soundscape entirely with her voice. While expanding into mixing in diffrent genres of music and expanding her range. She makes music for the love of it, for the love of sharing it with her loyal, loving Winter Storm. That love extends to Marko for sure. He is Tarja's friend so he is our friend.
In the old days Emppu used two guitars, a different purple one tuned to drop d, and a white one tuned to e/standard. He would switch out guitars for the song. Around the time of Once they just started writing everything for d. I believe they even changed the older songs, because I never saw him swapping out guitars on the Decades show. He does travel with three ESP's now days. His main purple. A white one ready to go in case he has an issue mid show. And lastly a black one that i have never seen him play, but I think he writes/composes with it.
Great analysis, Eric, as always. Tuomas does not indulge in a lot of solos, but this one fits perfectly, and he delivers it with the passion and love it deserves. Tarja does that lovely crooning sound in the middle and all of the rest you’ve mentioned. Shout out to Yukka, who lays out that foundation and never lets go
Holy mackerel, pretty much no one reacts to old-school Nightwish, especially deeper cuts like this! For once my recommendations came in clutch. I kind of feel like a kid at a playground, finding someone else taking interest in their Very Favourite Things hahaha. This is such a banger in terms of arrangement and vocal harmonies, and I think it flies under the radar because it's absolutely not a "radio song" in any way. If you want to get further into Old Nightwish, I think you might enjoy Walking In the Air from Live in Pakkahuone. That one has the band as absolute *babies* just starting their journey into being big time pro musicians in the metal world, and it's not metal as such -- but it's such a gorgeous song that it's still played on the radio during Christmastime here. The mixing is on point for a live take, even though you can hear that the band is at the end of the set. (And IMO it's worth hearing on headphones just for the chill factor, but I'm massively biased behind my nostalgia goggles...) Thanks for giving older NW a chance -- not many TH-camrs do!
That moment at the end of the song when Tuomas leans down his head, maybe realising this is the last performance of The siren from Tarya with Nightwish. Love all of them. No band has moved me more in a long time.
