You know what I also LOVE about this line? The telephone poles and wires along the tracks are incredibly intact overall (maybe they even still use them in spots)! It gives it a true "old-school America" feel. I bet 611 and her crew haven't seen many of those in recent years.

It we would be interesting to see both of them running there. The 611, designed for pulling power, not speed, would have an advantage over the 80 inch drivered 2926, although the 2926 has the same boiler pressure and on the inch larger cylinders. Also they could double head.

I stopped overnight in Roanoke six years ago, then visited the VMT the next day. I had visited 611 at Spencer shops the day before. After the museum I heard north on US 11 to Harpers Ferry. A beautiful drive through the Shenandoah valley in my ST. No interstate! After a brief look around at Harpers Ferry, I started home and drove all night. Got back to Macon county Illinois about 5am and took fresh doughnuts home for the family.

He also hopes that the 2 Canadian 4-6-2 Pacific's 1286 and 1238 return to Virginia and pull excursions like they use to in the early 1990s.

15:50 The Buckingham Branch has talk of getting a government grant, mostly from Virginia, to replace the sectioned rail with continues welded rail, that should include a new sub ballast to make for better passenger service. The Buckingham Branch was so mushy and worn out before it was taken over by the company that prominently called it the Buckingham Branch it was almost unusable with its main user being Amtrak. The upgrade should make it able to have the normal maximum speed limit of 79 mph for passenger freight tracks in the USA.
It would be nice if it were to go the next step to be upgraded to the maximum of 110 mph for at-grade road crossing railroads without moveable barriers or limited access (perimeter fencing). 125 mph passenger service on freight tracks has worked very well in the UK. The UK has almost no level crossings as they call them. Instead it has very low height clearance over its railroads allowing low bridges over it and very height restricted railroad cars along with having narrower width restrictions then typical for standard gauge railroads.
Above 110 mph requires movable barriers at road crossings and perimeter barriers such as fencing of the railroad ROW. After 125 mph there can't be at-grade crossings. Amtrak's SuperLiner II cars are speed rated to 125 mph and are over 30 years old. In the USA to get 110 mph passenger freight tracks right now and likely for the foreseeable future appears to require public support and funding, but nothing like the expense of ultra 350 kph high speed rail and its running costs.
The main reason for a lot of the expense for speeds over 79 mph on railroads is federal restrictions placed on railroads because of people trespassing on their railroad corridor property and consequently getting hit by trains. With that in mind some public money support for minimizing at-grade crossings and paying for public at-grade crossings seems warranted. I've never heard or read a news report of private at-grade crossings having fatalities or major injury. There are also many sections of freight tracks that could be upgraded to be free of at-grade crossing and putting light fencing around them is sometimes done anyway. With that, except for curvature restraints the line can be configured for very high speeds.
