I must say, Silco being an actual dad to her and really loving her was a very pleasant surprise.
There are no bad guys in this show, just a LOT of shades of grey.

Yes he is a kingpin, he took over the underworld and filled it with drugs and goons.
But he is also a revolutionary, a man that wants to free his home from the clutches of an opressive government and create an independent nation.
And yet he would sacrifice everything, because he loves his daughter. He is a true father.
You cant call a man that loves his daughter and wants to free his people a one dimensional bad guy.
He is the villain of this story, of Vi's, Jayce's, Caitlyn's... But he is also the hero of his own and you can feel that, its very good writing.
So Jinx seriously prepared a fireworks display to go with the gift she gave Silco. That is kind of adorable.

I love how they frame this as your typical "angry father walking in on his daughter playing loud music" moment, but in this case the father is a powerful crime lord, and the daughter is homicidal psychopath who blew up a building and murdered 6 people just so she could steal a magic gemstone and build him a superweapon for his revolution.
That's the best thing about this scene, in my opinion at least.
Violent Schizophrenic, not psychopath, common misconception. Jinx has empathy to a certain degree, and does regret some of her actions, ergo can't be a psychopath.
She does however, have vivid audible and visual hallucinations, a hard time telling apart what's real from what are her hallucinations, violent tendencies, an EXTREMELY intelligent mind and the emotional maturity of a tween girl.
So again, violent schizophrenic, yes. Psychopath, no.

To be fair, I doubt he could even if he wanted to. Jinx is good at two things. Killing people and making things that kill people. As far as I'm aware Silco is nowhere near as combat ready. At this point she follows his rules and lead just out of respect and parental love.

The cuts either imply that Jinx switched between 5 different tasks in the 10 seconds that Silco was yelling at her before getting her attention, or she actually completed the tasks and Silco was yelling at her for about half an hour before cutting off the music.
Both are equally plausible and equally funny
LMAO He basically runs the Undercity but the thought of him just yelling at Jinx for 30 mins and being forced to listen to "Get Jinxed" on repeat and having almost no power to stop it until he FINALLY does is somehow a smidge funnier😭
He shows up when she's spinning on the chair singing into the spinner. Then she's leaning over the workbench. Then she's looking at the blue prints, then she's looking through the magnifying glass at the firelight wing.
I think that in the time it took him to get her it's perfectly possible for her to spin on the chai then lean over to take the blueprints, look at them and then grab the magnifying glass to check/start working on the device.
So Jinx either has ADHD and can't focus, or has ADHD and was hyper-focused?

@@justaghostinthesea No, she has PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) and went insane due to her trauma. There's no ADHD here. ADHD stands for 'Attention Deficit with or without Hyperactivity Disorder'. In her case it's not an attention disorder, it's a trauma disorder.
Also, anyone can be in their own bubble. It's completely unrelated to ADHD.

When Jinx hugs him, Silco is holding the two most important things to him. His daughter, and his nation of Zaun, and he'll be forced to pick between them
But right at the end, he looks between both his hands and he turns to focus on her. A realllll sneaky way to foreshadow his decision.
Its even more nuanced than that. In an interview with Silco's VA, he says that Jinx embodyed Zaun, its ideals, its chaos. Silco's love for Zaun overlaps with his love for Jinx
@@mikaelmyers6135 i noticed this too! usually, villains just look at the thing they’ll use for power instead of the person who’s giving it to them (especially in disney, like how mother gothel looks and kisses rapunzel’s hair but not actually rapunzel herself). silco gazes at the gemstone but in the end, instead of smiling wickedly like he’s forming a plan, he gazes at jinx.

In 24 years of existence and countless of anime I've watch, there is not a single anime that comes even close to the quality of the micro expressions shown in this masterpiece. You can basically watch the whole serie without sound and you can understand everything just by looking at their facial expression and their non verbal actions.

In my opinion what makes it even more tender, is realizing WHY she did all of that. She didn't do it for herself, not out of frustration, not to prove anything, not for her own gain or out of spite. She did it purely for Silco.
Probably to make amends for the setback she caused him with her meltdown at the shimmer transport. She genuinely felt sorry for the trouble she caused Silco and went out and got something valuable for him...

Yes, she wanted to prove that she was capable (as she did with Vi)… to Silco.
With “not to prove anything” I mean that she didn’t do it for glory or general approval. Only for the approval of Silco.
A consistent character trait of her, is that she heavily clings to a particular person and makes that person her whole world.
In her Powder days that was Vi, which lateron changed to Silco.
..annnd in trying to please silco and prove she isnt weak, she attacks the square and sparks the rest of the conflict between Piltover and Zaun/the Undercity. She was the inciting incident for the rest of the season
if she doesnt attack the square, jayce never gets on the council, and that means Catlin get the order to free Vi.
In the scene before she does the attack, she worried that he thinks she’s weak and she says “I’ll show him”. I think she was trying to make him see that she wasn’t broken and useless. But this scene does make it seem like it turned into more of a gift for him less than something to prove.
Didn’t even notice she’s crafting her firelight bombs in this scene.

It seems to me she stole more than just the gemestone from the fair, i think i recall a kid playind with one at the beggining of the episode, my guess is she reverse engineering the 1 she got and then mass produce it as flying bombs for the 7 episode

It kind of makes me sad because of memories though. I mean it's so typical of someone going through a manic episode. I remember asking my loved one about the harmful consequences of their actions several times while they had a manic episode. They were proud of their actions and didn't really seem to understand or care that I/others were hurt. It was really upsetting, knowing how gentle and considerate this person is usually. It's painful when you see someone you care about change so much. Arcane is so well-written and it pays attention to detail.

Silco was a wonderful father to Jinx. He gave her unconditional love til the very end. Even when she killed him, he still tried to smile for her after he called her perfect. T~T After re watching the show, Silco really was the only positive reinforcement Jinx ever had in her life. And looking at everything she had, you can tell Silco tried to spoil her rotten. Even keeping the mug and ash tray she made him in his office. Jinx was desperate to be useful to him, yet she failed to realize how much Silco actual loved her. Only as he was dying, did she believe/realize his previous praises and assurances.

Also take note of his body language; he's fully aware of her desire for affection being her adoptive father, and once she presents the gem to him, he softens as he realizes she must have undergone a crisis earlier following her mistakes, and this act is essentially an apologetic expression of love.
@@heartshapedlace I wouldn't say manipulation, more like *projection.* From meeting her to his death, Silco honest-to-God believed every word he said to Jinx. All his lectures and lessons to Jinx were his way of raising her, but his values themselves are wrong. And he projects everything he is and has been through to her. The only time that Silco acted for himself was when he learned that Vi was in the Lanes and hunted her behind Jinx's back. Even then, Silco believes everything he said about Vi because to him she's just a carbon copy of Vander.

It's weird how many villains were in this show yet it really felt like there was no bad guys. You had to root for everyone a little bit at some point.
There's no real villain. Silco is portrayed as the main antagonist just bc the series is about Vi and Jinx (mainly). The people from Piltover have their beliefs and they act based on that. The same happens for every character. Everybody has enemies.
They were still bad guys, but they weren't monsters.
@zee by that logic the whole Council is objectively evil for letting half of their civilians be slowly poisoned to death by toxic gases… is all about perspective.
@zee But that was his only way to get money for improving downside and for building an effective army in case of a war against topside.
@zee the council just uses cheap manual labour from the underground in their factories, but never does anything to share the wealthy justly. Piltover was rich when the show started and waaay richer after the hex gates meanwhile Zaun just got poorer, hungrier and more drug-ridden. Even though by all means, the underground are their citizens too. Silco's goal with shimmer wasn't to get rich on drugs but to give Zaun a fighting chance against the elites that clearly couldn't care less if they live or die. Indicated by the fact he was discontinuing production already by the time he negotiated with Jayce. The goal all along was freedom.
What I'm saying is if i'm ranking them, I'll put the council as the most evil. Especially Heimerdinger out of sheer neglect for 300 years!
0:19 the tiny subtle smile on Jinx's as she mouths the little squeal after 'panic' gives so much character to her in a moment that lasted like 2 frames. Such talent at this studio

Arcane is like a piece of art I'd admire in the museum. The Netflix subscription I got was already worth it after I saw Arcane.
The way her eyes light up when Silco yells "half a dozen enforcers dead, enforcers dead!" was a great touch. She's so proud of herself.

Silco really grew on me. His first few scenes made him look like a super boring and generic villain with several vallain tropes thrown into one bland character but they really managed to flesh him out during those 10 episodes. In the end I really understood why he acted the way he did.

He was NEVER "super boring" or EVER a "generic villain" in his first few scenes EVERY nor did he every have any "bLaNd cHaRaCter" tropes in the slightest, that's nonsense and complete rubbish. EVER since his first introduction he came off as stand off starting villain antagonist for the show that's meant to be menacing and taken seriously which worked WELL only to be massively more fleshed off as time goes on, that's what happens to EVERY villain out there, period. What you're saying about his introduction is just ridiculous.

All characters need introductions to showcase who they are, all villains need to display villainous characteristics in order to BE that character.
You can’t take a villain seriously if they don’t do any evil and you can’t take a hero seriously if they’re not doing anything heroic like not saving anyone.
Character actions display their personality more ever than words ever can.
And WTF is this idea of implying “trope” is bad in anyway. It’s not. A character being a hero or a villain is a trope. A character wearing glasses to showcase they’re smart is a trope, and a character shelling someone to show they’re a good person is trope.
Tropes are almost everything in fiction. Your not making any sense.
His start was introduction to who he was to his persons just like ALL characters have.
Imagine the surprise of being shocked of s villain doing evil things, that’s ridiculous.

This show lets you think Silco "oh generic disney villain" first, and then subverts the tropes. Now that is good suspense writing.

There are so many things to mention here.
1. The scene is purposely invoking a relatable cliché to quickly establish Silco's and Jinx' relationship, the dad trying to yell over his rebellious daughter's loud music.
2. Jinx' excited nod at 0:28 that asks "Are you proud of me?", showing that she cares about Silco and his opinion of her.
3. Both when Jinx is initially ignoring him and at 0:33 when Jinx starts looking away, Silco looks for ways to get her attention back without laying a hand on her. He doesn't tap her shoulder or grab her arm, instead he chooses to first turn off the music and then later take her toy away. Silco is angrily scolding her but his actions make it clear that he would never hurt her.
Very true! Even when she’s stabbing him with the needle multiple times he still doesn’t do anything to cause her physical harm, that kind of self control has all my respect💙

Yeah, and while Silco is the villain and everyone fears him in some way, jinx doesn't. This bad guy figure doesn't has any effect on her, like she knows he wouldn't hurt her
I think the biggest thing to notice is the way Jinx was so comfortable to not listen or even act immaturely and not take Silco seriously. Especially since Vi got angry at her when she was young and also hit her for killing people on accident, this would normally traumatize kids and fear their parents being angry at them, but Jinx wasn't afraid of Silco being mad at her or scolding her. She isn't even scared when Silco took her pen away showing he's more angry now. This just showed how patient he's been with her and how he's been raising her and it also showed how comfortable she is with him.

His tone is amazing bc he’s scary every where else but his gorsh darn teenager just killed a guy (or 6). He goes from “I’m a deep and menacing kingpin” to “strained shouting in an effort to not trigger my insane child’s ptsd”
His tense arm movements in the background add to this because in other scenes he's in big comfy chairs in spaces he's in control of and glaring into people's eyes and stuff, but here he's just so grumpy and I love it 😂

I know this was 8 months ago but piltover was the enemy so it’s only reasonable he wouldn’t have been too angry other than the standing arrangements being messed with.
Well to be fair. They never show any dialog between them after the hug and Silco looking at the gemstone and Jinx. Did he say hmm. Well what u did will speed things up with more enforcers coming. So you better figure out how to use this. Or something of that nature. I don’t think he’ll ever say he’s disappointed in her.
What is sad is her whole hideout is a giant broken ventillator fan. The undercity used to have a way to get clean air, before people above stopped giving a shit about maintaining it.

I love the confliction on Silco's face during that hug. (How I read it at least) He knows all this happened because of him. Yes Jinx did this but she did it for him. Everything is for him. He can't be upset with her because he fueled her fire. He should be proud...but I don't think he is. I think he's genuinely disappointed in himself that he let Jinx get this out of hand. It hurts both sides and there is a balance to his corrupt chaos that she just fractured. But what is he to do now? He can't talk her out of things anymore. But he also won't abandon her, because he truly does love her and see's her as his own. He's a father who failed his kid...but at least he wishes he did better I think. Not a lot of parents really see the damage they caused or worsened with their choses. I think he see's it but is too damaged himself to really know what to do to make things better.

I think a wild fact to their relationship is despite the fact that he's clearly out of his mind upset, he never actually lays a hand on her despite this. I forgot how this scene went for a second and assumed he'd grab her by the shoulder or something to get her attention, but he just shuts off the music. The closest thing he comes to is grabbing something out of her hand which is reminiscent to a father grabbing something that's distracting their child in the middle of a lecture or something

The amount of subtext in this scene is incredible:
• When the lyrics say, *"Wanna join me? Come and play. But I might shoot you in your face...."* Silco is joining her in her lair, understanding that he's an accessory to her crimes, but it's also subtle foreshadowing to when Jinx, during a psychotic breakdown, shoots Silco to death.
• When the lyrics say, *"Bombs and bullets will do the trick..."* we see Jinx fabricating _bombs_ with the mechanical butterflies seen at the Progress Day fair. (This also serves as an inversion, since Piltover's idea of progress is innovation through magic and technology while Jinx's idea of progress is upheaval through mayhem and destruction).
• When the lyrics say, *"What we need here is a little bit of panic!"* we see Silco in a literal state of panic.
• When the lyrics say, *"Do you ever want to catch me?"* this accurately describes Jinx's status as a wanted woman on the run from the law.
• And just as the lyrics were about to say, *"Right now I'm feeling ignored!"* Silco, who's currently being ignored by Jinx, shuts off the song.
What I love the most about this scene is the way Silco's eyes move. First at Jinx hugging him, then the gem, but at the last moment, he turns back to look at Jinx. No matter what, his daughter is first.

What impressed me the most is that they showed us Jinx as a great engineer/inventor. She succeed from the failure and she never gave up with her weapons, they may not be perfect, but during the whole series we can see how they become greater. From a sloppy trap in the beginning to the mega rocket in the final scene. I just love the level of detail and lore development. Thank you so much for this series riot.
Ikr from being not worked at the beginning to now being the best bomb blaster is everything it shows how creative and brilliant inventor jinx is. The character presentation and Every small details attention is excellent this is the best series I ever watched in my life I love it. Looking forward for 2nd season.

I loved that as well, they made all her mental breakdowns look very realistic, from the way she was moving until the way she was breathing , voice actors in this show were incredible ,I struggle with schixzophrenia and manic depression myself but unlike Jinx, I take medications and can function quite well, but I can totally sympathize with the character and I never expected that because I was never really big fan of Jinx , never understood what is the appeal but now I totally understand and she is definetly my favorite soo far from Arcane, never would have expected her story to be soo tragic either , would want to give her a hug, but she probably wouldnt let me :D

Jinx is everything the various movie versions of harlequin wish they could be. She’s terrifying and tragic and amusing all in one package. I’m honestly stunned by how good arcane really is. It’s something special and I didn’t expect that. Riot really let the creativity of the animators, writers, producers, and directors soar and it shows.
Everyone involved should be deeply proud of what they created. Like even the selection of locale and characters to flesh out in arcane was perfect. I don’t there’s been a video game property brought to screen worth watch let alone actually being something great.
I’m honestly speechless I thought I’d hate it. I love it. Arcane is amongst my favorite TV shows like it reaches season 1 of stranger things heights.

Silco is a classic case of doing the wrong thing for the right reasons. He's manipulative, cold, cunning, and willing to make sacrifice after sacrifice in order to save the majority, but he only became a monster for the sake of his people. The way I see it there are no real villains in Arcane. Everyone had their reasons and circumstances for doing the things they did.

Himerdinger, who I believe is the oldest member of the council sitting at well over 300 years under his belt (if I'm correct) was genuinely surprised to see the Undercity in the condition that it was. The problem that the council had was that they just saw what the Undercity did, but they never stopped to consider why they did it. Which is something a lot of people in the show on all sides do, and it's a very, very, VERY common habit in real life too.
This is why I get pissed at shippers who ruin this relationship for me by putting them as a romantic relationship and not as a father and daughter relationship. It is honestly so much better than my and Dad’s (or both of my parents’) relationship that I’m almost jealous… the amount of warmth Silco shows to Jinx is not romantic or lustful but like a *father* a good Dad that loves his daughter but is conflicted by his ambitions.
Finally someone that gets it right, at the end of the season slico tells Jink that he loved her like a daughter. Considering he raised jink after Vi got arrested.

@@aez2259 Even though Jinx grew up into a teenager, mentally she is still a child. Hence why she is very clingy to Silco. It feels weird to the audience to watch it because as a society, we expect children to "mature" and become less dependent. But both of these characters definitely do not see each other as romantic partners or anything. They just have an out of the ordinary father-daughter relationship.

They definitely aren't sexual with each other. In fact the animation has a lot of visual storytelling to it, like how extremely comfortable Jinx is jumping on his lap. It's like there's still a child in there, stuck in a young adult's body. It never got to live out its childhood because of trauma and being forced to become a ruthless killer instead of getting to be a child. But none of that is sexual. It's sad. Because she *should* have grown out of that phase by this point, but hasn't. She doesn't even really seem to have any notion of romance or sex. If she did, she'd definitely not be as comfortable getting physical with Silco, a man who isn't even related to her.
Silco really does just view her as his daughter, and Jinx is a traumatized young adult who's still acting like a little girl around the only anchor she's got, the only parental figure she has. It's wholesome to see, but sad when you realize why it's like that.

Rewatching this scene, now knowing that all this time Silco really indeed loved her as his own daughter, and he was never using her and would even give up his dream of having independence as the nation of Zaun just to protect her and not give her to the authorities. All of his wrongdoings aside, he was still a true father to Jinx. He didn't even lie to her about Vi abandoning Jinx because he didn't know that Vi was captured all this time and even he assumed that Vi did indeed abandon her sister.
He ordered Marcus to kill Vi.

Well, in a way Jinx, or Powder at the time, was Silco's re-run. She wanted to help her people the only way she knew how and her sister left her to die for trying. Silco wanted to help his people the only way he knew how and his brother left him to die for trying.
the scene where vi “abandons” powder and then silco finds her crying is so powerful. this child has just lost literally everything and just needs someone to love her, and silco, while being a crimelord, is still a person who sees a crying child in need. he comforts her and takes her in. it just all feels so human.

I also believe that coaching Jinx to become dangerous and volatile was the only way he knew he could help her survive the deadly jungle of the undercity.
