3 Places I Will NEVER Travel

- I travel all over the world, and I enjoy showing fellow travelers destinations that they may never have thought of going to. However, there are some places I will never visit and here are the three places I will not be traveling to. I also have seen so many of the cross armed don't videos that I had to do one myself for fun.

Don't... go to Oakland, California.

very diplomatic use of language, done well without the need to name specific nations
true, as these situations change so often you never know
Apart from North Korea. Which isn't particularly dangerous anyway as long as you stick to the rules and stay with your tour group which is tightly controlled. I could be wrong but I thought US citizens were banned from going there anyway although you can go from the UK.
Like Liberia, Somali etc.
is that what you mean by not mentioning specific nations?
It’s almost like you were too busy opining to watch the video
And this channel is always very diplomatic. That is nothing new. I hope will never change.
@@reddwarfer999Correct, Americans can’t go in on their US passport, but could go if they have dual citizenship on that passport(as long as it’s not south korea, as they can’t go too)
How did this comment get so many likes when you clearly didn’t even watch the video lol. He named several nations he wouldn’t go to.
The DON'Ts of visiting North Korea would probably be a feature-length episode in itself :D
It would be just do's of North Korea, probably 15 sec tiktok
Simple: just don’t go
I know people who have been there. They found it very strange and also crazy because they were constantly under observation, but on the other hand it was also interesting and not at all dangerous. North Koreans are people too.
Instead of being 8-15 different "don'ts', followed by an explanation of that "don't", all the "Don'ts" would be "DON'T VISIT NORTH KOREA", followed by an explanation of the "Don't".
For Example:
"MY first don't is, don't visit North Korea. Because if you are a US citizen, you're not getting in anyway. You need special permission to get in ever since that Otto Warmbier incident, so it's just not going to happen."
"Even if that wasn't an issue, my second don't is, don't visit North Korea. Because before you even get off the train, your bags will be searched for contraband. In fact, there's a lot of things you're not allowed to bring to North Korea [shows long list of things banned in North Korea] and if you get caught with just one of these things, you could get in very big trouble, so just skip the trip and avoid the hassle."
"Now my next don't is, don't visit North Korea, because..."
@@pmr9591 Reminds me of the GDR - and yet I've been there about 15 times. If you don't have any relatives in a country like that, it's always easy to say "don't go there".

I went to Aruba three times from 2014-2016 and EVERY TIME when I would tell people I was going they would say “but what about what happened to Natalee Holloway?!? Aren’t you afraid to go there?!?” Like the one major crime that has ever been reported from Aruba that happened in 2005.. my gosh..😂
I’d reply “I don’t have to worry- I’m not nearly as good looking as Ms. Holloway was…. 😉🤣
LOL. As a general rule that's often when I'll start considering a country - just after something major happens. Provided this is a 1 off, I work on the theory that it's highly unlikely to happen again any time soon (statistically) and check to see if the prices have gone down

@@susie9893 Umm, on that last one, sadly the answer is "fughittabouttit"
@@joeylawn36111 🤷♀️ so far so good
I think it is because the way Aruba handled or rather didn't handle Natalee Holloway's disappeance. They certainly gave plenty of breaks to the murderer and his family.

When the smoke clears, you should try Kiev, Ukraine. It is truly a fascinating place.
No it isn’t and nothing will clear up
I'd love to travel to Ukraine.
No it isn't
Ukraine and several locations in Russia were on my “possible destinations” list before the war started. Now I don’t know if I’ll ever go to any of them.
I can confirm that Kyiv is fascinating, despite what the unforgivable, soulless bots might say. They will meet their just desserts, whether it's soon or later...
Great advice! Safe travels my friend!
Good sound advice - why risk it. Have a great time on your travels!
As always a lot of sensible and well-informed advice!
My Golden is rule is to avoid anyplace that ruled by a Dictatorship or is at a high risk of an international Conflict. You never when shit will go done and you don't to be caught with your pants down like being stuck in middle of a Coup in a country that doesn't respect rights.
Would that criteria have excluded the USA on shocking January 6th event? 😂
Would you consider monarchs as dictators?
@@LibertyDino It depends. The King of England, hell no, he's just a figurehead. The Sultan of Brunei I would consider a dictator, and a bad one at that.
Taiwan is probably safe to visit, just read the room before traveling there. The US state dept would likely issue a travel advisory if there was credible intel of China massing forces for an invasion (there would be at least several weeks warning of an invasion as it would take that much time for China to amass enough troops in Fujian to launch an invasion).
The USA?
Quick, to the point. Thank you. :)
Thank you for this. Very helpful and I also try to explain this to people. It’s also sometimes helpful to have a travel buddy.
thank you for your video it was really helpful
Thanks! Keep up the great work.
thanks!
I thought the 3 places were going to be Detroit, Oakland, and Memphis
All 3 places are safe if you stick to daylight hours and avoid certain rough areas. San Francisco and Portland are the two main US cities which are dangerous during daylight hours since the rough areas are also the main tourist areas.
Oakland is so rough that even the Raiders left.
@@mrvwbug4423 I live in Portland, it's fine. The tourist areas depend on what your area of interest is, and downtown, which I presume you are referring to, is very small. IDK where you got it that it's unsafe to visit. No worse than any other underfunded urban city - they all have their problems. Women and LGBTQ+ folks still have equal rights here, unlike half the country.
Thank you very much for sharing! Great information!
Thanks for this-good time to mention it
Man, you look great. Keep up the good work brother
Yeah, I am an American who grew up in Haiti and I brought my friends there for a visit around 2015. I wouldn't go now, but definitely go in the future and visit the beautiful waterfalls and beaches!
When I was in the Navy, I was in Haiti in 1975. Baby Doc was in charge and the Tontons Macoutes were everywhere. They came into the courtyard bar where we were and you could see all the citizens try to be as inconspicuous as possible. I recall thinking that Haiti needed a violent revolution. Would it have solved anything? Probably not.
Walt, I love the video you made! We’re planning our trip to Colombia soon 🙂
Great tips! We also would always travel with these rules! Cheers 🍻
I find that absolutely understandable
Hey!! I'll be going to this airport in just a few months! This October I'm traveling from Barcelona to San Francisco, first, and then I'll board the California Zephyr to Chicago and fly back from there! I'm really excited!
Mark, I’ve been to approx 70 countries and for most of those we’ve planned our own trips or gone with small groups of friends. In general, I agree with your list of no-go places, but as a personal addendum, I’ll say there are some places where I’ll go now but only as part of a larger tour group.
After Covid interrupted our planned trip to China in 2020, it’s on our agenda again for 2025. However, we’re going as part of a 20-person tour group operated by a large multinational company, which gives me a little more comfort. As a couple in our 70s our window for extended travel is slowly closing and having a tour company that can provide security, 24-hour support, as well as solve language and customs issues relieves us of those burdens.
Thanks for all your videos. Istanbul, Croatia, Slovenia, and Lisbon are booked for this fall. Safe travels.
You will only see what the CCP allows you to see, and food safety is also a Hugh issue, although there's nothing you can do about that.
Food safety is a huge issue in China, and even in a large tour group, if your tour company didn't bribe the right people you may suddenly find Chinese officials demanding money from you. Extortion of foreigners has recently become a huge problem in China.
@@soysanto9939 China isn't North Korea. You can go where you want, do what you want and speak to whomever you want. Food is another thing, anywhere in poorer countries you have to take care. When I worked in China, I had the idea that I wasn't going to take care that much as I was going to be there for a while, so I just accepted constant squits for the first 2-3 weeks, then I became immune, at least within the same region!
I love this channel ❤
thanks Siena
Phew, I feared the South Pole was on the list! I can now look forward to seeing more penguins with Wolter - huzzah!
Went to Kyiv this past week. It was worth the risk. Amazing people
This! Ukraine overall was also one of the most underrated tourist destinations before 2022. Kyiv is just in its own league and so are Lviv and Odesa.
Hopefully it’ll become 100% safe in those cities again soon 🙏
The little enclave nestled between the Carpathians, Moldova & Ukraine’s western neighbours is also 100% safe even now - Chernivtsi and Uzhorod never get shelled bc those missiles would have to fly through Moldovan airspace. That part of the country is very different from the rest but also lovely
😂😂😂😂

We agree. Safety is number one for family.
We had planned to go to Paris last year, but about two weeks before our trip, we found out there was a lot of rioting and civil unrest. We canceled our trip and finally went a month ago and had a great time. Love your channel!
I hope you'll come to Australia & New Zealand soon!
North Korea is actually very safe. The only way to tour North Korea is through their state sponsored tour. You'd get pampered the whole trip and see only the things they want you to see and nothing else. If they let you in one of those tours, then you are guaranteed to be extremely safe. I've talked to people who joined those tours before and they said North Korea is a modern and advanced country and people living there are happy. You likely won't believe in them but at least you don't need to be worried about safety
US state department doesn't allow Americans to go. So even if you manage to get over there, you might get you passport revoked.
I wouldn’t want to play into their propaganda machine.
@tochronos Trump visited N.Korea 5 years ago.
Hi Wolters World, I’ve been a big fan of your channel for at least 13 years. I remember the first video I watched was of you sitting in a snowy park outside an Austrian palace in Vienna! I also happen to be Somali (raised in Britain, which I call home) and just wanted to say a big thank you for covering Somalia with decent sensitivity and in a mature manner (as you always do). Cheers!
And maybe, Somalia will soon turn things around and possibly be able to welcome you and your beautiful family! Until then, thanks once again and safe travels, fellow traveler!
I think that's really wise. Stay safe!
I love Rick Steves. But in his exclusion of most of the world‘s continents, he deprives the traveler of so many positive and safe experiences. Wolter takes us there. Thank you.
Rick Steves is strictly Europe
He doesn't deprive anyone of anything. He covers Europe, which is fine.
Thr US has never truly let go of its isolationism, but that's fine as long as you recognise it.

When I went to Bogota, it was in the early 2000s and it wasn't as safe as it is today, it was known for many many kidnappings. They called it fishing locally. 2 countries were on the no travel list from the US, Libiya and Colombia, but I went because my girlfriends family was there. While I was there, there was a bombing nearby, my girlfriends mother was a teacher for a private school for rich kids and she had a motorcade pick her up to take her to school.. crazy. I didn't get out to some of the local places because I had 4 people around me watching everything. We went to this little village one day and in the main square was an ice cream parlour.. I went in and 6 nuns with the full on sally field flying nun habits on, eating ice cream. I was going to take a photo but one of the nuns looked up and gave me the look, like.. NO.. so I didn't. (being a good Catholic boy) moments later a jeep pulled up with what looked like one of the 3 militaries in the country. the family said "stay still" I pulled out my camera an took photos of guys that had bullets wrapped around their chest, and what looked like a rocket launcher... they didnt' care about me, thankfully. but when I got back to Houston, the US imigration wasn't too happy with a US citizen going to Colombia and they kept me and searched everything, including my photos. looking back, it probably wasn't the good time to go. now is :)
Yes it was dodgy back then, still a bid dodgy now, just have to stay away from the hot spots like Cauca is now and Cúcuta, other than that it’s a beautiful country, great to ride around on a motorbike, cheers from Cartagena.
Thanks for telling the story. Between Uber and Amazon, most Westerners have no idea what real life is like for rmilliins upon millions of people , be it in Bogota or Raqqa or the Congo.
@@Chrisb8s Colombians will tell you that petty crime is getting worse, still not very safe. Kidnappings have decreased a lot though.
One day I hope countries like Yemen, Syria, Iraq become good to travel to. So much beauty, rich in history and culture. I would love to see those countries
I see a lot of people travel to Iraq and it seems pretty safe and that's also what the people visting say (have been saying for a few years now). I mean I haven't heard any big news from there in a long time either. I wouldn't travel alone personally and it's good to be a bit careful, but it generally seems pretty safe honestly.
Yemen probably isn't safe yet and I don't know much about Syria either.

@@YeetGamer3000 Yeah that's what was on my mind, seems like it might be more risky now, but I wasn't sure if it was safe in the past either. I personally would like to get the chance to visit these places at some point and hopefully the conflict ends soon for the sake of the people in Palestine and nearby affected places.
@@ellem8990 For a few years, Damascus in Syria was quite safe. There were very few signs of conflict besides the economic crisis, but there have been a few Israeli airstrikes this year so I’m steering clear from that region. Same about Iraq.

Appreciate your words and like someone said, the diplomacy!
Never say never. Life is full of twists and turns.
I'm an anxious traveler. Your vids help me want to get out there and travel...conservatively, thxU
glad we can help :)
The more research you do on a place the less anxiety you should feel. Even walking in your own city or block their could be a random incidence of violence, so no point associating traveling abroad itself with danger. Learn the areas to avoid, local scams, some phrases for help and emergency, dress like the locals, and keep your wits about you. The world is less scary that how be make it out to be in our own heads. And the rewards of travel outweigh the fears a hundred fold. Most people arent out here thinking of ways to harm or scam you. Speaking from extensive travel experience and no severe problems. You got this.
I was going to suggest you go to Ciudad Juárez and make a video titled "How to visit Ciudad Juárez and not die!" Seriously, I went to that city and didn't feel like I was in danger. I felt safer there then I do in Oakland, California!
I just saw on a random meme-site that that city is like top 20 murder capitals of the world. BUt yeah, with a pinch of salt.
@@BillHicks420 At one point in time Juárez was the #1 murder capital in the world (I forget when). Most of the killing is between different cartel gangs, police, and politicians. I think if you don't stay out after dark, you avoid drugs and prostitutes, and stay in the touristy area near the border you will probably be ok.
Oh please 🙄
I agree. I remember back in the 90s when parts of Europe were too dangerous to visit like Serbia, Bosnia, Kosovo, Czechoslovakia, etc. But now Croatia is a very popular vacation destination. And no one thinks twice about visiting Prague or Budapest. Belgrade is even visited despite the tensions that still exist after decades. I'll be honest, as a woman I'm not really comfortable visiting a country or region where I would no longer be seen as a human being. I'd love to see a list of cities or countries who have good accessibility for those who are disabled.
I was in Dubrovnik week before last, for a wedding. For my birthday this year I went to Sarajevo. Lovely old town with lots of cafes and restaurants. Some harrowing tales from the war though. Previous time I was in Croatia, Bosnia and Montenegro, I went to Mostar, where that bridge was blown up and subsequently rebuilt.

We were lucky and never had any problems though. We got to experience some unique things like a personalized tour of an enormous hydro dam, a visit to the office of a high ranking official when we were trying to figure out how to get to the top of a skyscraper to see the view, meeting some religious missionaries who took us to an Arab neighborhood with incredible food, flying on a 1940s era DC-3 to an archipelago with pristine sandy beaches and waist high water and lobsters grilled fresh from the sea, and the usual tourist experiences like Angel Falls. It was the best travel experience I've ever had and the lack of tourists was refreshing.
Thank you for sharing that. I traveled to Cuba several years ago and it was also a unique and eye-opening experience.
The irony is, Venezuela used to be the safest country in South America. Two communist dictators certainly changed that.
I am a little disturbed that people think Narcos takes place in present day Colombia and don’t bother to google things and think for a second….now I’m not saying Colombia is a peaceful perfect utopia with no serious problems at all, but Narcos takes place 30+ years ago….not today….
i know. we got so many spiteful comments about our colombia trip because of it. We loved our time there
Colombia was great, travelled around for 2 weeks. Just be sensible about where and when you walk around.
If you wanna avoid dangerous places, don't go to southern Sweden, especially Malmö...
What a load of crap. I’ve been there and it’s perfectly fine.
@@angus7278 Fine? THAT's a load of crap.
No other country in Europe have experienced such an explosive increase in gun violence as Sweden, and Malmö is the worst place in the country right now.
Did you go to Rosengård borough i Malmö? It's considered one of the most dangerous boroughs in all of Europe.
Don't take my word for it, google it.
Btw, Stockholm used to be worst, but that has changed.
I’ve seen you had been to many places in Brazil, but never the southern portion. Try southern Brazil (after this crazy El Niño weather bringing floods to the region) lots of places to visit such as Florianópolis, Garopaba, Bombinhas, Torres, Canela/Gramado, Bento Gonçalves, Itaimbezinho, Morretes/Curitiba train ride, Salto do Yucuma, Serra do Rio do rastro, Cambará do Sul.
Those black glasses look great on you!
I cannot wait to go back to Ukraine 🇺🇦
I feel like America fits 2 of these 😢
I have been to the Ukraine for two weeks this April, my fiancé is Ukrainian and we wanted to visit her home. But it was Uzhgorod in the far far far west, so we flew to Budapest and took the bus from there. It is safe there (and will hopefully stay safe) and the days we spent in the Carpathian nature were so great.
I briefly contemplated visiting Uzhgorod last year when I was in Kosice in Slovakia (flights to Kosice from the UK by the way) but thought it wouldn't be the done thing. Would they welcome tourists do you think? I also visited Debrecen in Hungary (again flights from London) which isn't too far from Uzhgorod.
At this time, what about Ecuador?
Should I specify the highlands?
I was going to comment that three places is way too short a list. But in reality, your list covers a lot more than three places. I won't go anywhere that bans alcohol, pork and members of the LGBTQ community, or where religious and cultural law is prioritized over civil law, plus the three mentioned above.
Amen!
Stay gone, we dont want you ❤
Went to Yugoslavia during the civil war. Got shaken down on the train. But at least it wasn’t the near-death experience I had while motorcycling through Los Angeles during the riots.
El Salvador is super safe now, thanks to Bukeli.
It's be cool to see Mark at O'Hare
Thx
So, in a nutshell--
#1: Overly dangerous places
#2: Also overly dangerous places
#3: Other overly dangerous places
1:21 overly dangerous places. Like Chicago? :D
🙄
Chicago is not any more dangerous than Rome or Paris.
Wise, especially with family.
Fair enough, but I do hope you'll be able to visit my home country one day, which is currently on this list.
