He was both a singer & musician. His guitar & banjo playing are legendary. A lot of musicians & artists today could learn a lot from his style & technique. Glen Campbell & Jerry Reed were also underrated guitarists. But these men paved the way for a lot of musicians today.
Roy was considered a country music superstar in the 60's and 70's, but he was fully capable of playing anything and everything. It was said that if it had strings, Roy could school you on it. He was also a humble, caring, and truly funny man, by all reports from people close to him. And as you noted, he always had fun while he performed.
