    I'm not gonna lie, I got a little excited when you started pulling stuff out of the toolbag! very interesting to see what you have in it. thx for showing what you know.

      Christopher, I will show some of those tools in more detail when I make a video about hammer eye punching. Blacksmithing is a craft in which everyone, regardless of skill level, can learn from others in some ways. Thanks. Glen

    Thanks for the video. I was hoping to learn how other people punch, cut and drift without a helper and your video has given me some ideas.
    By the way, I feel better about dropping things now! Thanks for not editing it out.
    I think part of my problem has been that my anvil is a little thin and not very flat on top due the previous owner's use of it.

    Glenn, I put the punch I purchased from you to work this past weekend on a RR spike tomahawk. Performed flawlessly....even after I abused it using it as a drift as well lol. Really nice tool. I'm going to have to expand my collection to include a few others!

      I'm glad the round punch worked well for you. It really helps having these hot use tools made from a heat resistant steel. That doesn't mean that they won't blunt or need redressing - heat and pressure can deform just about anything over time. But they last far longer than tools made from just straight carbon steel. Thanks for the great comment - it really helps. Glen

      I think I'm going to do more videos like this where I don't make a specific item but just show a technique in a few steps. Thanks. Glen

    Hi Glen, This is my kind of video because you are semi experimenting. Meaning you know the properties of each steel, and the techniques needed to perform a task. But us with little knowledge comparatively speaking, should not just blindly take someone's word for it. In fact, I believe one should test out what we learn from videos, books, etc. Most of us are compelled to do it anyway, much like hanging a sign saying wet paint, don't touch. That sign is an invitation to touch the paint. Thanks again,Jerry

      I'm glad you like this video. Knowing the techniques needed is one thing. Applying them to make a certain piece can be something quite different. I think a good blacksmith needs to be able to make adjustments on the fly. You make very good points... Thanks for your interesting comment.

    Watching the replay, the hole was mishaped when you were setting the hardy shank, as you said, cooling off the punched area would have prevented that.

    hi glen, love the content you create. was wondering if you could export an anvil similar to yours and what would the cost be?

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For a time, I was selling the smallest (65 pound) of my block style anvils. But the shipping is high and the margin low on such an item and so I stopped. If the circumstances are right, I might have another go at it. Sorry I couldn't help at this time. Thanks for watching. Glen

    Nice job Glen! A series of videos demonstrating techniques and how to use various tools would be an invaluable resource for beginners and would make a great playlist. The info about the different types of steel was a good touch. How to select the correct tool steel for making the various smithing tools as well as choosing the right material for various types of projects would be great, but it should be the criteria that you use as trying to be comprehensive would require far too much time and effort for the research. Besides, people will find your experience to be far more valuable. Anyway, how are the channel stats doing? I hope all is well in your world brother!

      Jeffrey, All very good ideas. I plan to make some videos that are more instructional; something like this one, wherein I don't complete any certain item but explain a process or a specific technique. I've noticed that more than experienced blacksmiths, there are folks starting out who would like more details about basics. I took a big hit when TH-cam did their "purge" or whatever it was that happened but the numbers are heading up again and all is good with me. I wish you the same. Thanks. Glen

    I really want one of those anvils, along with the full tool bag and hammers. I gotta get the refractory for my forge ordered! We're you thinking of good old fried chicken from the states when you made that comment? Good job

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Ron, I was thinking that (about fried chicken) because I kept dropping everything as if I had fried food grease on my hands. But you know what, I did have fried chicken for dinner after making this video... Thanks. Glen

    yet another great video. Can this be employed to ,ake a Japanese style Bladesmithing hammer?

      Yes

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Martin, The technique is basically the same. It's just exponentially harder to slit/punch/drift in larger stock that has a higher carbon content. Thanks. Glen

  • @jonblais6225

    you could use something like that as a bending tool,

    • @gstongs

      Jon, Yes, I though about that. And I will make a bending fork in a future video. Thanks. Glen

    I heard putting charcoal in the hole while slitting it, Probably makes it not stick as much

    • @gstongs
      @gstongs  7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jon, That's an old school method and is said to work well. I haven't tried it enough to say but it seems like it should work well and better than WD-40. Thanks. Glen

    • @jonblais6225
      @jonblais6225 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah I haven't tried it myself yet, but I do intend to try it as a follow up to my last attempt. The edge rolled inside the axe head I was slitting.
