Our local bin store has a new rule. Anyone caught opening boxes is required to purchase that box.

I would call the "Junk Bags" "Mystery Bags". It's more alluring and doesn't imply that the items in them are junk. 😊

I hate to vacuum but the floors r questionable. N the junkie look. As a business owner I know how hard it is to keep it presentable but it’s a must. The look of the store will determine the customer quality u draw.

Always put at least one good item in a grab bag. In my jewellery grab bags I always put a small or non expensive sterling silver ring or ear rings that haven't sold. People love it because they never lose.

It’s crazy what customers (idiots) do with products. This also happens in charity shops too. I have also spotted clothing displays with sample items to stop the above opening packages. There is always one. The worst ones are the ones that need to get on the bus first. This often happens especially if there is a wheelchair and they want to get on first. There are too many idiots out there.

It’s like if it’s in a bin, it isn’t worth much, so it implies permission to be careless. Don’t take it personally, Lindey. It’s the business. I hope customers don’t rip open the junk bags.

that is horrible though and wastes their income and increases theft. Similar to someone stealing the toliet paper or throwing rolls around in the bathroom.

Lindey, I dont know if you've already tried this, but maybe put a roll of packaging tape in your cart while you're cleaning out the bins so that you can repair item boxes as you go??

The fabric or craft junk bags sound like a great idea . You could call them fabric junk bag or craft junk bags. ;) useful idea.

Customers will perceive the items the way they see it being treated by the retailer. If boxed or multi pieced items started on a shelf or hung up they will be treated with more respect than if it is it just heaped together with everything. Yes it is would take more organization but that would convert to more sales, less damage and conceivably some higher price points.

Holiday junk bags, crafters junk bags. Any category specific junk bag should do well.

How does your system work? what if someone picks an item up from a $3 bin and tells the cashier that they got it from the $1 bin?
My local bin store has recently installed cameras at the end of each row. I recommend doing that, if you catch someone destroying stuff or opening boxes where they should not be, ban them.

of course the customers destroy stuff, you're selling stuff that's at the end of its' retail life, presented in a big messy bin like the Goodwill does with the otherwise unsellable stuff just before it goes to a landfill (or overseas!). It's maddening but that's your demographic, Lindey and it's just the way many customers let loose in a bargain store are going to behave. Probably happens at Macy's too, just not as often. Another downside to brick and mortar, sorry you have to deal with it!

We call them junk bags so that people buying them have realistic expectations. We have learned that people would rather be pleasantly surprised rather than expecting something better and being disappointed

Instead of bins where it doesn't look like it's valuable, how about shelves (like thrift store) and put the multiple items in the bins so everything looks nice & neat (like the HBA items in the background)? Might cut down on the handling of things that are not of interest just to dig to find something of interest to that customer? Just a thought.
