  • This is the forteenth video in a series where I will be documenting the build of my Porsche 924 Safari. I don't really know where I am heading with this build but I will figure it out as I go. In this episode I continue the work on replacing the worn out clutch.

Great work! If you got anyone near you with a welder that stud can easily be removed by welding a nut on.

Thanks for the advice, I think it is high time I learn how to weld!

It’s so useful having a welder. When you weld a nut into the broken stud or bolt it also puts a lot of heat into it. I try and get it cherry red as I weld it on. It usually comes off fairly easily after that.

Right, I will ask Santa for a welder this Christmas 😎

I was going to suggest the same thing, since it's a Steel bolt into a Aluminum bell housing. You can weld a nut onto the stud without worrying about it welding to the Aluminum bell housing. Plus the heat from the welding helps with the removal process.

Great video! Is the broken stud too long to just use a bolt extractor? I had a bolt break off in the driveshaft coupling sleeve in the transmission. I drilled a hole in the bolt and hammered a bolt extractor in, then I was able to just screw out the bolt. I cleaned the threads with a tap afterwards. I guess it was a much smaller bolt and maybe the threads weren't as rusted.

Thanks George! I have a bolt extractor socket set, but they are too big. I also tried drilling it, but because the shaft is in such bad shape I cannot center the drill and I didn't want to damage the aluminium. I could still cut it flush with the bell housing so that I can create a better surface for drilling. I haven't given up yet, but I found a used bell housing for 35 euro, so that is the easier route 😅

Good work. Tough job with the access being so poor. I think the rear main seal is no longer available as a single item, I had to buy a gasket and seal set to get one. Are you going to get the flywheel resurfaced too?

I managed to source a RMS for the 924 without any issue, it looks just like the one I removed. I have this one www.rosepassion.com/en/diagrams-porsche-924-1981-eu-924-2-0-coupe-manual-gearbox-5-speed/clutch-and-engine-flywheel-2315/crankshaft-connecting-rod-4530/059103051d-p5592-sealing-ring-5592.
The flywheel is actually in good nick, no real scouring, but maybe it would be good to have it skimmed 🤔. I need to do something about the clutch fork though, is is not moving freely.

@@GarageBiljon I must have missed that one on Rose Passion. Good find.
The kit comes with the seal for the front of the crank shaft, oil sump seal and a few other seals which I’ll use anyway.
If the surface of the flywheel looks ok you are probably fine :)

Or you could weld a nut on to the stud and remove that way

It is quite embarrassing, but I can't weld😓
