Composing music am I right? Anyway, I hope everyone's doing well!
My PC needed some maintenance so I was unable to edit videos for a few weeks. Also, I'll be moving to another continent this month so I was thinking about making some Q&A while I'm getting use to the new country. Let me know what you think it.

started composing music for my game as there were no musicians in my team, so far i found it really hard to understand melodies and music as a whole, but music theory helps a lot, also what i found really helpful is take a song you like and try to imitate the vibe from it in your own composition. Not copy it, but try something similar

As a music student, the only advice I would give you is steal. No, seriously, take things that you like from other composers and mix them all together, theory is useful, but that taste and intuition is what's going to give you success and satisfaction.
    As 8bit music theory said:
"The difference between plagiarism and being original, is that you steal 6 people instead of one"
Btw, to be your first composition is really good!! Keep going!!

While it is important to respect the originality and work of other musicians, learning from them and incorporating elements of their style into your own can help you develop and refine your own musical style. Additionally, having a good understanding of music theory can help you become a better composer as it provides a foundation for creative expression and facilitates understanding of how different elements of music work together. Doing both can help you become an even better musician and find greater satisfaction and success in your creative pursuits.

As i delve deeper and deeper in a self-educated way to learn music and actually compose instead of just rearranging, i often turn to melodies from my past. Oftentimes there are no scores to find so i decided to get familiar with a midi controller.
When i understand a maybe only 10 second long melody it just fills me with satisfaction. I even started to modify them, workaround with them, change the stile it is played in and for...

As someone who has been a composer for 10+ years, it's really interesting seeing someone new to music getting a grasp of the concepts (since we've known them for years they are pretty much part of us, we don't even think about it).

    • @maximewikenfors6305
      @maximewikenfors6305 ปีที่แล้ว +44

@@zablade I know you didn't didn't ask me but as someone who is currently studying art music and composition I hopefully know enough to give some advice!
My best tips for starting out and getting the ball rolling is to use your ears (sounds redundant but I promise theres something to it). Even if you have no schooling in music theory, your brain is -through a lifetime of listening to and encountering music- very acustomed to many of the conventions of western music. If you were to sit down at a piano (or whichever instrument you prefer) and simply try playing notes until you find a sequence you like then you already have a brilliant start for a composition. Even though the choices you make might not be consciously made, you'll find as you learn more about the workings of music that they generally fit quite nicely into the frameworks of music theory. Learning about things such as harmony and progressions is of course very important as it widens your arsenal and will allow you to make more aware choices in your writing, but it's important to have fun with the process as you're learning rather than tunnel-visioning on the idea of mastery.
Really try and write something (it can be short and simple, in fact I'd probably reccomend that initially) and just focus on making a thing which you enjoy. Parallel to that, watching beginner friendly theory videos is going to help you out a ton so I strongly reccomend doing that as well!
If you're curious about good starting points or want some more specific pointers then I'd be more than happy to offer what I can! And cliché as it might sound, make sure you have fun with it!

Nice job, dude. Sounds nice. If you're beginner at composing music, it's harder than coding and drawing (my opinion). Because music is the thing you heard and you cant describe what sound you need etc etc. I'm still trying to make game music for 2 years.I don't know they're good or not. FL Studio's stock plug-ins are not for game music it may be hard for beginners.

i’m currently learning how to compose music for some video games i’m making with my friends, and i love smashing all of my favorite and niche musical influences together to make shit. my favorite thing is taking some existing songs whose vibe i’m trying to match, and write my song in the same key as one of them, but i challenge myself to put no more than three similar/same chord progressions, rhythms, etc.
i’m already a singer with decent relative pitch, but i’m steadily teaching myself proper music theory. ngl i don’t really NEED to learn it, but it’s nice to have actual terms to explain why something does/doesn’t “work” instead of just going “uhhh because i want it to be like that?”

A tip for making melodies: make it feel like the instrument is singing. A good example is the OST for the Donkey Kong Country series; songs like Aquatic Ambience and Forest Interlude have melodies that sound like someone could sing it and makes it feel more alive.

As a musician i can tell literally we all steal chords and its not stealing actuslly because there is already a system with progressions that we can maybe modify a little if you want to? But its still the same. Its like using formulas i guess nut chaging the letter X to an "A" for example. Everything it's literally invented. You just have to out some imagination to create something new and original from it! Or not. Thats cool too! To be honest clichés can be a great challenge. And by that i mean, the most used poor chords. Its about making them yours and unique or just something typical but catchy! Everything is great. That's the gift in music. Almost everything is already invented thanks to Bach-san. To me he was more like a scientific in music than a composser tbh. I love your video btw! Even if i find it now, a little late haha

Creator of Cave Story, Pixel Amaya, created his own music tracker called orgmaker and used it to create the ost for cave story, so it would be lightweight enough to share over the net in 2004. Then he made pxtone collage, went open sauce, and is still being developed by an autistic community. It even has a manual. If it sounds like I'm shilling, that may be, but the only thing you have to lose on pxtone is time!

This tune seems to sound too good for this game (well, I'm not a fan of 2d) XD
The only thing I don't quite like is the sound of the bass. You know, they are so.. too soft/deep. I don't think this, uh, realistic sound is really good here :?

i would sugest to look for midi chord progresion, sample and drum loops next time. i did like the track but there was a lack of energy because of the lack of drums elements and no melody cuts/variantion. i could imagine some nice drum and bass drum loop for you track. but gg for your 1st track

Late Comment here but I am in the same situation-ish. I found out getting an MIDI Keyboard makes it way easier to create new melodies due to the instant feedback it provides!
It helps more than watching some random tutorial. The theories will advance your skills, while a midi keyboard will allow you to express creativity! :)

Glad to know I'm not the only one that had to crunch music composition from 0 knowledge to 'presentable' in a matter of weeks, what a roller coaster of emotions man, one day you feel like a king after you managed to string a couple of random notes into something pleasing to hear and the next day you are at rock bottom thinking you are WAY in over your head because nothing you put together sounds 'right'

Very good! Im a music composer, i work making OSTs for games and short films, and this is a very good start! For two weeks is a good work and its fits very good in the game. Maybe in a future you will want another DAW, bcause FL studio dont works well with some music things (as time signature changes and odd rhythms). In my opinion, Reaper is a free and good alternative, its not THAT easy to use, but i dont think that its horrible hahaha, and there are a LOT of tutorials.
