It would be hard to even try to justify how urban beats, trap, rap, etc. have broken into the global radar across the last decade without understanding the inner flow of the Gen Z, the social, economical, existential crisis that came with their times, particurarly in Latin America. My Music x Society teacher Angelo Sturiale (he being an italian living in Mexico) once asked the class why latin urban music was considered by "high brow" musicians and connoisseurs as "cheap" "disposable" and "glorifying of sexual and material hollowness" , and I remember I answered: because they never lived in a slum or favela listening machine guns as drums (neither have I) There's not much I can do to convince or convert, I myself was an skeptical , but artists like Nathy Peluso have turned me into a believer ( just like her song with C. Tangana "Ateo") . The only paralelism I can draw with her art is that of the tv show "Euphoria" , which takes the vices and low points of Gen Z as a pretext to explore with magestic cinematographic experimentation, the same way Nathy does with her music, by willingly and intentionally choosing the urban rythms and metrics to deliver her speech, when she could easily stick to her infinite range and sing beautiful, melismatic jazz that makes men "high brow musicians" and cultural stablishment spirit's sore, , because "that's what a good, respectable female singer shoud do". Fuck no, and Fuck the Police, too. Everything from her stylistic choices, makeup, audiovisual productions, coreography (shes a profesional dancer as well, take any video, from "Delito", to "Sana, Sana", to "Emergencia" to the Live Color Sessions), nothing about her is unintended, superficial or vague, but quite the opposite: she fills the voids in every genre she explores with pure art and meaning (thats without diving into the semantic and phonological construction of her voice, verses and accents) .
