  • A dozen pumas have been recorded in trails and campgrounds in the Valle Chacabuco sector of Patagonia National Park, thanks to the monitoring that Conaf and Tompkins Conservation Chile have been carrying out since last year. The installation of 17 camera traps and the record of sightings managed by Conaf shows that pumas exhibit different behaviors in public use areas: some are tame and relaxed, while others start up when they see people.
Also, visitors and wildlife use the trails: pumas, foxes, wild cats, chingues, armadillos, wild rodents, birds such as thrushes and loicas, and exotic species such as hares and minks.
This colaborative work aims to contribute to the design of observation and behavior standards, as well as regulation of public use related to wildlife in general, and to the puma in particular.
