Michael: literally teaching another language
John: "we have a funny accent sometimes and we have a gambling problem"
That’s the benefit of having won independence. Wales has watched its culture be absorbed by the British. I think the Welsh see language as a key mechanism to preserving their traditions and culture. I agree. It seems interesting and unique.
@@sylviagreenberg3005 Hi as a welsh person I totally agree!! ( If you are Welsh yourself I apologise but I'm assuming you aren't). The Welsh government is trying to reinforce the speaking of the Welsh language in schools to keep the culture alive. Also a small correction but Wales is part of Britain and therefore is British. Thank you for being interested in my country! ( again apologies if you are Welsh yourself)
@@sylviagreenberg3005 Welsh people ARE British you moron
@@sylviagreenberg3005 and were also penalised as children for using the language (Welsh Not), so it's a point of pride and even a bit of a thumbed nose to the Saesneg.

Michael Sheen: *Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch*
Jon Hamm: *look of absolute fear*
Me too
He was not alone!!!
I live there
Me
@J Sev According to Wikipedia it is Llanfairpwll or Llanfair PG. I think I've heard of Llanfair or something similar.
I love how Michael suddenly transmogrifies into a wild Welsh woodland warrior whilst winding out his native words. Completely different person.
Keith Klassen That's pretty much the Welsh effect. Everyone mounts a dragon and rides to the top of one of their many mountains.
Woodlands? Not many trees in Wales.
I live in London and the second I talk about Wales I transform into Rob Brydon
Really??!!
Omg totally. I heard he wants to continue learning it and attain more fluency.
Michael: I'm gonna give you a cwtch in front of everyone
Jon: 😬
Michael: * hugs him *
Jon: 😃
noodlefriend
Both our minds went to somewhere-
You have to understand that a cwtch is more than just a hug.
My welsh friend says this word is more like “mashing” than “hugging.”
i thought it was gonna be a wedgie
My mind is blown, people around me said cwtch all the time when I grew up, I though it was an English word and only just realised it doesn't have that meaning in English.
Let Michael Sheen teach Welsh on Duolingo, please
MissValentina I use Duolingo Welsh and Tinycards too!
@@nmart1n I love Duolingo! It's so well done. I haven't practiced in months, though. I'm afraid the owl is going to turn up uninvited at my house any day now. But it's great!

Actual ray of sunshine Michael Sheen, what a perfect casting choice for Aziraphale.
He’s an angel played by real life god
He was originally going to play Crowley! I can’t see it.
Oxana Chirvina I haven’t seen it, but I’ll go watch it. I guess the casting in general seemed so perfect that I couldn’t imagine it any other way!
You should watch him in Impossible. He's brilliant.
Much, much darker than Crowley. Super intense.
Oh yeah, or Unthinkable! Michael's acting skills are actually insane!
Michael sheen: "Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch."

What would David be?
As a St. Louisan of Welsh heritage, who speaks a bit of Cymraeg but took at least one of the same English classes as Jon Hamm at Mizzou in the mid-90s, this is, perhaps, the greatest thing I’ve ever seen.
I’ve never needed Michael and David shouting at each other in Welsh and Scottish Gaelic more until this moment. It would be so glorious
I’m so proud that Michael sheen is single handedly representing the welsh community I didn’t even know ppl don’t say ych a fi
The Mayo Jar genuinely didn’t realise people don’t say ‘mitch’ outside of Wales until last year
i say ych a fi 😂😂
I wonder if the expression might have some connection with the swedish expression "ack och ve". Similar pronunciation and meaning.
@1DNEZ The more Anglicised Welsh don't use these sayings.
In fact their quite old fashioned now, probably used more in the valleys.
@@eleanorwebster3378 they say it in Ireland, too. It's more of a rural saying, but still common enough.

I love how Michael Sheen sounded progressively more Welsh as the video continued.
The utter delight on Jon's face when he realize what cwitch is gives me life
*cwtch
Cwtch is so much more than just a cuddle! There's no English equivalent. It's a safe place or a safe feeling, I tell my dog to go on to his cwtch when I want him to go on his bed in the corner, my neice's security blanket is her cwtch. Sitting on your nanna's knee reading a book is having a cwtch.
Absolutely agree with you 😊🤗
This is funny. In Spanish we call that same place "cucha", which sounds practically the same 😊😊
It sounds like snuggle or cuddle is the closest term, snuggle could be a hug, or sitting on your grandma’s knee or spooning with your partner. Or just snuggle in a blanket, or bed, or rug, snug as a bug.
It doesn’t mean just a safe feeling in general (“cozy” does though, and can also describe a place or cuddle), but snuggle can represent being in any safe & warm place (often implying another’s arms, but definitely not always).
Soledad Bervejillo I feel warm and safe inside cootchie as well.
That's a really lovely word. 😍♥️
Michael Sheen: Ych a fi.
Jon Hamm: *I’m going to name it Jeffrey.*

A "full course meal". So... a one course meal then.
I love how the welsh slang is cute and mostly meaningful and expressing emotion and the St. Louis slang is...not lol
you need a black person explaining st. louis slang, period end of story.
@@EE-bg1de Why

He’s so precious
1. I would die for Michael Sheen
2. I’m not entirely convinced welsh actually exists and is not just a joke non-welsh people aren’t in on
3. I would also die for David Tennant. He is not in this video, but I want it to be known that I would.
Not sure if 2) was a joke
But Welsh does exist and belings to the Celtic languages. Its grammar is very similar to Irish Gaelic and Scottish Gaelic but they are not mutually intelligible
Would not opt to die for David Tennant, but I would love to slay vampires and travel through time with him! ❤️
It exists. I was brought up speaking it and speak it every day!! And no it's like English at all it's like comparing Spanish to Russian !😂👍

You’d never know they were there to get you to watch Good Omens...
I was wondering about the pair. It would have registered in my mind if it had been Michael Sheen and David Tennant, though they might have a video about Scottish slang already.
Yep, will do anyway but this was fun!
I’m a simple person- I see anything Neil Gaiman-related, I click. Been meaning to read Good Omens for years, admittedly mostly did so after the show was announced, but very glad I did.
They are exactly Aziraphale and Gabriel xD
but did they succeed? yes
I can’t believe they didn’t include “Hoosier”, that’s like the most popular slang word in all of St. Louis
Aren't "Hoosiers" just Indianans?
Do you know our anthem?
@@DerpASherpa117 No. It is a long story, but many years ago a bunch of new car factories were built in the southern saint louis county area (with significant tax breaks) and the car makers promised lots of jobs. The car makers then closed some plants in Indiana (mostly southern if I am not mistaken, where many residents have Kentucky roots) and offered them jobs at the new Saint Louis plants.
So, instead of jobs, Saint Louis area residents got a bunch of working class neighbors, many of whom with southern cultural roots. They moved into an area that was largely a blend of rural and trailer parks and it soon turned into "those filthy Hoosiers came here and took our jobs."
It essentially means sort of a blend of hillbilly and white trash. And it is now used everywhere in the city, not just in the southern STLCO region.
Imagine my reaction when I relocated to Indiana and saw businesses with "Hoosier" in the title. It was like "White Trash ______" and it felt weird to see used in any manner other than an ironic one.
So that's the shortish version of the longer story of why STL is the ONLY place in the world where Hoosier is a bad word equivalent to "white trash."
As a Missourian who lives very close to St. Louis, let me tell you all of the STL ones are used so much it's insane. Also, Jon Hamm talking about the best baseball team in the world, aka the Cardinals, is the best thing I've seen all day

Also sounds like "yucky"
Ych a fi not ych a vi.
@Erik Cnating And you might say it after drinking some Akvavit, too. :)
I thought it sounded a bit like Swedish "Ack och ve". Related meaning but a bit more after the fact. Like "Ack och ve, I am now sick because because I drank the disgusting liquid."
Joshua Sibley Autocorrect mistake, have fixed it ;)
Great to see Welsh being introduced to a worldwide audience. Michael is an absolute treasure. Typo alert on “Iechyd da,” though. On Michael’s iPad it’s misspelled “Lechyd…” He pronounces it correctly though.

Oh I was waiting for the high school question - that is THE St. Louis question. We really do ask everyone we meet where they went to high school - and it really does tell you a lot :) Too funny
It happens on the other side of Missouri as well!!!
It is funny. I grew up in St. Louis was told it was a St. Louis thing. Then I lived in Kansas City and heard it was a KC thing. Then I lived in New Orleans and heard it was a New Orleans thing. Finally, when I moved to San Francisco, I was told it was an SF thing.
Living slightly south of St. Louis, no one asks it. But people that went to high school in the city all ask each other that. Don’t know why it’s so important to them
Desmet lol.
As a native St. Louisan, all of these slang teams are spot on and the descriptions are perfect.
Michael, you broke Jon Hamm 🥺
Is it just Michael Sheen, or are all Welsh people so lovely? Cuz if they are, I guess I've decided where my next trip is going to be.
Also Welsh is apparently Klingon of European languages :D
Klingon?! Hardly....Y and W are vowels. The Y is used as a "The" when used singular. And used a i (as in the word "it" when in a sentence or word. It is also used and pronounced as an i)....W is used as a U and the oo sound. DD is Th....once you realise this. It becomes pretty simple. The only diffucult pronouncition in Welsh is the Ll sound.
As for the Welsh being that friendly. Yes, that is very true....sometimes they are too friendly for their own good.
Yep, we’re lovely we are! Come and try the Welshcakes! 😊💖
Live long and prosper.
No yeah we're pretty nice, Welsh people are great
Come here!! Might sound biased but us welsh really are welcoming I love being Welsh!! X
Props to Jon for having a go at Welsh.
For those confused: in Missouri it is only legal for casinos to exist on “navigable rivers” such as the Missouri River or the Mississippi River, hence, gambling on riverboats...
MadelineMae - Hence, “the boat in the moat” legal bit a few years ago.
If "Learning Welsh with Michael and Jon" were a thing, I would learn Welsh.
It would be nice to learn Welsh but the number of people that speak it is very small so it's not really worth the time it would take to learn it as an adult.
