The Pickup Cover: IT DOES HAVE A USE!!!

  • The decade-old debate! As classy as they look, do the pickup covers and bridge covers on those early 1960s Fender basses actually have a purpose? Everyone will give a different answer to this, but here's an unconventional use for them in the form of a live bass loop! I bought this particular bass second hand and it came with an attached pickup cover, bridge cover and thumb rest. I removed the bridge cover as it got in the way when playing with a pick, and I didn't find much use in the thumb rest. However, I kept the pickup cover on as it provides me with an alternate place to rest my thumb, meaning I hit the strings with my fingers at a slightly different and more preferable angle to simply resting my thumb on the pickup.

The real purpose of the pickup cover was to help quiet that annoying 60 cycle hum that early single coils made incase of poor or no electrical grounding, lack thereof or radio/neon/appliance transmission and interference. This issue was noticeably most prominent in the factory than the outside customer base and Leo Fender had to address it before any shipment or sales. You also have to remember that this was conceived in an era before reverse wiring or hum cancelling techniques, 3 prong ground plugs and sockets in which what is now part of our current electrical code. Everyone be careful out there

@@leavewe Leavewe the cover had nothing to do with either hum or buzz. Humbucking was 30s technology, just like the bass. They both came into their own in the 50s. 3 pin plug standards, except for holdouts and maybe 3rd word countries, came into effect pre 20s. Even with an earth, you still need to filter out the buzz. You only need to get it below audible levels, but it's not a difficult circuit.
The pickup cover looks nice, makes a good rest, protects your guitar/bass a bit, but doesn't do much else except get in the way sometimes. I do like them, but beyond some form of Farraday cage effect, which they are too open. They would need an additional wire connecting the two ends but run under the pickup, allowing any alternating current to be induced into the guard and carried to a common through a diode. That would eliminate hum within the strings, but if they are active pickups you will have sound quality issues.

What I have heard it has to do with limitation of the magnetic fields of the pickups. In early days the pickups were not to the standards of today, so they caused a sort of noise resonance of vibration of the strings. To control it, they hovered a cover with demping pads in it. Nowadays it is unnecessary, but for authenticity you can still get those covers. I have contacted Fender to have a slide on cover over the bridge without screwing it on the body. They have taken notice of it, but so far nothing has coming up. Maybe they will for vintage reasons I hope.

Seeing as how the metal isn't grounded in-circuit it wouldn't serve any means of reducing 60 cycle hum. If anything having a hunk of metal near the magnetic field produced by the pickup magnets would INCREASE hum. As you see in this video the pickups reproduce the sound of knocking against the pickup cover. Conversely, the idea it increases the magnetic field around the strings has some merit, however the effect is marginal and stems from a general misunderstanding of Rickenbacker's early solid body electric guitars (The 4000 bass, Capri series etc), which were peers to Fender's offerings at the time. These instruments had "horseshoe" pickup designs that featured a magnet that surrounded the strings 360 degrees. The metal covers were simply conceived by Fender as a way to hide the intricate workings of the guitar (exposed pickup bobbins on Teles, crude bridge saddles) and make them more presentable (in comparison to Gibson) to conservative musicians who were JUST beginning to accept electric instruments en masse.

A good response question would be "Why don't all bass guitars have it if it serves a purpose?" My only other guess is so the strings don't vibrate too much.

While I was browsing the internet I was thinking how will it sound with it, will change the sound. Of course like all us bass players we are all chasing that perfect tone, how can I make my sound better, I think all bass players do it more then any instrument it seems. Well I got it today and will chose witch bass, probably one of my Squiers, this way if I screw it up at least I did not screw up one of my Vintage P's and J's.

You left the bridge pickup uncovered. I am searching if and how is it possible (and manageable) to install ashtray covers on both pickups on a PJ bass. A combination of a Jazz Bridge cover with a Precision Neck cover would leave little room in between so that solution doesn't seem to be right. Maybe if both covers are from a Jazz bass... but I 'm not sure if the neck cover which is supposed to fit on the slimmer single coil pickup could do the job for the precision neck pickup. By the way nice video!
