  • The 1991 Suzuka 8 Hours race marks the third round of the FIM Endurance World Championship. Deemed to be a summer motorcycle sport festival for Japanese fans, the event will draw over 150,000 spectators.
This prestigious endurance race brings together a number of Grand Prix riders. Kevin Magee and Doug Chandler team up on a Yamaha YZF750, as do Peter Goddard and Niall Mackenzie, along with Norihiko Fujiwara and Yasutomo Nagai.
This edition will be particularly trying, not just because of the thick dampness that Japan experiences in the middle of summer. But the particularly changeable weather, which will put the riders and technical teams to the test. Forcing them to alternate between wet and slick tires.
The race starts in pouring rain and pole position rider Michael Doohan takes the lead. In the first lap the Australian is passed by the Yamaha of the Kirin Beverage Racing Team of Norihiko Fujiwara / Yasutomo Nagai. The YZF750 piloted by Fujiwara holds five laps before losing command to Doohan.
Starting cautiously, the Magee / Chandler duo build momentum and the fight will intensify between the HRC team and the NESCAFE Yamaha RT team. As the rain intensifies, Peter Goddard / Niall McKenzie on the YZF750 of Itariya Yamaha Team Hayashi take second behind Australia's Gardner / Doohan. A succession of falls will then plunge them into the depths of the classification.
On lap 58, approximately 2.5 hours after the start, Fujiwara falls from 5th place. The Magee / Chandler teammates inherit 2nd place and chase the leader. There are 4 hours before the checkered flag and the fight rages between the Yamaha no 31 and the Honda no 11.
As the 6th hour approaches, teammates Magee / Chandler look strong for the victory but Magee will lose control of his machine. By the time he returns to the pits to replace and repair a damaged gear mechanism, the white and black YZF750 is back in second position.
With a determined effort by both team and riders, they will maintain this position until the finish!...

    Thanks for this great video!!
Those incredible TT-F1 machines from the"Golden Age" of motorcycle racing. All these machines were hand built just for the Suzuka 8 hours. This race is still a truly incredible event. But of course the machines now are all Superbike based. TT-F1 machines were very special bikes, more prototype than production based.

    この頃は8耐もgpも地上波で流していたのに今や母国開催のモトgpさえ地上波でやってない僕が歳をとったというのもあるだろうけど90年代初期の耐久マシンが一番完成されていると思う

My first trip to Japan was just a little before this era, they had large format picture magazines with huge glossy full color shots of these bikes on heavy stock just sitting on magazine stands throughout the city. Snapped up a copy of every one of those I could find! A shock to see content of this level available (and apparently consumed by) the every day public compared to the complete lack of interest the entire US has for this.
The Suzuka bikes were prototype level race bikes with beautifully machined and welded components all over them. Still my reference for what a 'works' endurance machine is. If a build doesn't have some elements that approach this level- then sorry, it's just not good enough to impress me.

That OWD7 had some good power✊ Magee's save was great, then turn comical once he hit that wet grass on slicks...they almost had it in the bag, and fighting THE Doohan and Gradner, I think they can still feel proud. Great footage, hard to find info on most bikes of that era.

They seemed to be able to run strongly with the RVF’s at the time. Yes, that one small mistake is what cost them dearly. And the way they fought back was extremely spirited. Thanks for watching!

Love the classic racing Videos, Darren! I hope you don't mind, but I've used a few seconds of footage from this video for a little video we've done about the YZF 750. Let me know if that's okay! 😊

Some quality riders there. Magee never reached his true potential. After his crash and head injurys most teams gave him a wide bearth....
