I finally realized that, Rebecca was a filler character using an IRL meta inspired deck while Seeker was using a neutered exodia FTK to mock the 1999 exodia players during the format. I see DM differently now
Except that Seeker's manga debut was at the same time as Exodia released, before the degenerate Last Will FTK combo was possible. It is a nice coincidence though.
This series is very great. No matter where Cyber Stein goes OCG TCG Speed duel he gets banned. It surprised me to see how important deck destruction decks were early on too. And Dark Magician girl is a special card.
Series 2 was definitely a very interesting point. Despite being the point where it was water-clear that yugioh was anything but balanced, I think most of us have very fond memories of the time (or at least its TCG equivalent, even if it wasn't quite the same), and it is truly interesting looking back at it how at the time, even though the cards were still so rudimentary, there was so much room for combos and meta calls. Casually, it is the format I enjoy the most even now. Competitively it was always "Good Stuff", "Exodia", "Deck Destruction", and the odd combo/OTK, but casually there's actually a lot of cool things to try out, so I'm always fond of revisiting it. Great video, it's enjoyable to watch a video this informative.
I remember back then when everyone complained that Upper Deck was not releasing the same cards that the Japanese had had at that equivalent point in time. But seeing this video, UD definitely knew what they were doing. None of these OTK decks were ever possible in the TCG because they adjusted the Limited list and avoided releasing certain degenerate cards--incredibly, the OCG had had TWO "combo winters" before the Chaos envoys were even a twinkle in the designers' eyes!
OCG 2000 was a very important moment of YGO history. The transition of expert rules into new expert rules and having witch and critter errata. I can't believe witch and critter got errata twice in it's entire YGO lifetime. Seeing the evolution of toons and Maha Vailo decks really intrigued me. Thank you for sharing this very important part of history Janjo :)
I had no idea the OCG had all this out while we were barely starting the game here in the TCG with the Legend of Blue Eyes white Dragon. Excellent video!
I just want to say that this series is so informative, that it's nice to be able to see a series that isn't just a progression series but actually shows the history of Yu-Gi-Oh in Japan and why it's so big. There was a lot of things I never even knew about the game especially the amount of cards that have came out in the series prior before the first set was even released in the US. With that being said I'm the longtime fan of Yu-Gi-Oh, and my question is do you know when the exact time that the ocg started being more close to the TCG over in America? Because I noticed in the series video that you just did that they got Verona guardian all the way back in 2002 before we even got our first set. And with that, I'm surprised that they haven't evolved in the game as much as they have compared to us and the rest of the world. Did you get a slow down or something in Japan that would cause it to not release sets as frequently or way before us? I know this is a long message so if you can't reply to that's fine but that was just a question that I've been thinking about.
Yeah! This is real history content! #ShotsFired There's not many OCG videos out there, so hopefully this starts to get more people looking at the game as a whole and not just in one country! OCG & TCG started to merge (at least in core sets not getting split) in late 2004 for Soul of the Duelist I believe. It may be a translation/printing & balancing reasonings for the difference I would think. No worries about long messages- I enjoy the in-depth discussion!
I am really enjoying this series. I started watching these videos right when I started getting back into Yugioh after a long absences and its really fascinating seeing how the game has developed over time.
Great video! Good music levels, your voice is very clear. Love the OCG content, but you're honestly getting watched for all your content by me. Side thought: could the character cards released in the pricebook be used as "extra rules" for both players? Seems fairer that way, as a casual thing.
These videos hold such insane quality. It's a travesty how little views they get. Compared to yugi tubers reacting to OCG imports the amount of time and effort that probably goes into this eclipse is that a thousand fold. Shame the views don't represent it.
DUDE!! THIS IS AWESOME!!! I WANNA SAY THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR PUTTING OUT SUCH QUALITY CONTENT! Ok enough with caps. Honestly it's a shame your channel isn't as big as other Yugi-tubers because the content you make is top tier
I’m kind of upset I only found this now. And I’m hooked. I have vague memories of the old ocg and I remember that the weaker monsters were relevant. Also I remember comparing my Pokémon cards to this series and I was like wow their HP is higher than Pokémon and digimon cards(at the time I didn’t know the difference).
Another incredibly informative piece. I never knew they toyed with "character skills" this early on in the game's lifespan. A shame they didn't follow up that idea until much later (you would think a video game or something before Duel Links would have included them). It is also surprising to learn that they managed to get some decent Toon support very, Very early on, while the West didn't get anything usable for Toons for such a long time. I think it wasn't until the GX Era where Toons were even really seen again in the TCG because of Pegasus' brief cameos in that series, but then there's been some steady support over the years since then.
Probably for the best given how god awful they were (and tbh kinda still are) at balancing things. "You can have your dark magician cosplay as summoned skull". "Your monsters have summoning sickness", "you start the duel with 1 less card", "Pay 3k LP to add Exodia, The Forbidden One to your hand". One of these things is not like the others. One of these things, is not the same. And that's presuming it gets limited to once-per-turn somewhere. This skill card *literally* reads "win the game on your main phase if you haven't taken 1k LP of damage yet".
oh my goodness. while not my favorite format, the cards that came out during this era were basically what the game was in early 2004 when TP4 came out, which was when I first started getting competitive. Though I was just a kid with a rather poor family, so I never really had much of a competitive edge until reprints started becoming abundant around goat format. I legit felt my 12 year old self sitting in my locals at the time looking up to the players who had stuff like gemini, mechanicalchaser and even chaos emperor dragon. so nostalgic!
9:49 oh you missed the most important part of that different effect !!! it's not just that she gained 200 instead of 500 like the manga or 300 like the final release...it's specifically that she gained 200 for EVERY SPELLCASTER in the graveyard
I always believed that magician of black chaos intended to release with dark dueling stories for the gbc in the us since i was younger. Because if you look closely at the cover art for forbidden memories you will notice that the magician of black chaos is in English and it has a set printed on it DDS-001. And both were released around the same time meaning that they were most likely finalizing cover art and contents at the same time so im pretty sure it was a last minute change most likely to include popular monsters to push sales
Great work again. very instructive. Thanks. Mentioning meta decks at the times, info on tournaments and showing so many original card illustration is great. My only suggestion : to not overuse memes. Besides this, amazing work again !
Crush Card would have been so good in goat as an amazing main deck card especially against chaos. That card alone slaps chaos incredibly hard. Would have loved that card in my Ben kei otk deck lol

Like the video but you missed the cards from Duel Monsters 6 Expert 2 (Starway to the Destined Duel, but not as good) at the end of 2001. Big one is Exarion Universe, but Toon Dark Magician Girl means that toons would have been a playable deck (not good, but playable) when the Pegasus deck came out if the entire game wasn’t full of OTKs (You can actually see this in action in the DS game trilogy, where as an early promo TDMG can be quickly unlocked and all the other toon cards are in one of the starter packs, making Toon a surprisingly good early game deck).
