Re: Star Wars In the Philippines, Filipinos have this concept of pinoybaiting, where both TH-cam vloggers and big Hollywood studios just incorporate a Filipino while the story remains predominantly white. This is a major debate between Filipinos in the Philippines and the Filipino diaspora, because, understandably, the diaspora, not as attune to actual Filipino culture, would be happy with the representation. Recent examples include Lucifer and La Casa de Papel. This extends to general Asian representation, and (coincidentally, KMT) the most recent flareup is Filipino accusation, together with the rest of the SEAsian community, of Disney's Raya as just a clear form of SEAsianbaiting. In our perspective, Raya is clearly a white, or at least foreign, story, that merely uses SEAsian aesthetics as token representation. Egregrious examples include snow and desert (in SEA?!), the weird mixing of Islamic, Hindu and Thai architecture, an adventure storyline clearly patterned after Western fantasy instead of native epics and fables, completely disregarding common SEAsian modes of spirituality (ghosts, phantoms, magical realism) and opting for the exoticized image of SEA marketed in travel brochures, etc. It feels appropriative instead of empowering. For us, it merely reinforces the status quo of SEA as a backdrop or a plot device for the telling of white stories, instead of actually telling ours. That's how I view Nigel's Star Wars reaction: it's a Western story, so why add Asians while maintaining a Western framework? If the diaspora really wanted representation, they shouldn't demand it from Western companies with their Western stories, they should make their own stories, tell things from their immigrant perspective, and demand the support of the whole system and the majority (bonus points if you additionally support creators back home and popularize it in the West).
As a Star Wars nerd (with a podcast about Star Wars to boot), yes, there are a lot of "Asians" in Star Wars. Kelly Marie Tran's character's culture is "Asian" and the fact that that old Samurai movies, especially Kurosawa's work, influenced Star Wars, there is a lot of Asian-ess in Star Wars. Hell, the word, "Jedi" is believed to come from the Japanese word, "Jidaigeki" which basically means, "period drama" such as Seven Samurai, and The Hidden Fortress, both of which were very influential in the creation of A New Hope.
Who was Asian in the original 3 Star Wars movies? They had a token Black person but I don't remember a single Asian person. They did a slightly better job in the newer movies but had better Asian representation in the Mandalorian. If you want real and better sci-fi with an overall diverse cast, watch The Expanse.

You can buy a bottle of apple cider, take a table spoon or two without mixing with water. It's very effective , your sore throat should be gone after a few times of taking unadulterated apple cider. It doesn't taste nice though
I kinda agree with Nigel here, it’s good that they are putting diversity into consideration when it comes to film making nowadays, but many times it feels like they are doing it just for the sake of it, and it is distracting. I find myself asking why / what’s the purpose of this person being in the film after watching the whole film a lot... 🤷🏻♀️

Apart from the cuisine intricacies, almost 100% of what he is saying applies to EE people and their place in the West. I find this very interesting and probably why I have stuck with the podcast - it simply is relatable to a whole different demographic. I imagine it may be the same for others.
Talking diversity in the TV/movie industry - I think the first Altered Carbon did it very well - multiple ethnic diversities, everyone was actually speaking in different languages, it felt really authentic!

Since cameras were originally calibrated using the Shirley card, they had a difficult time color balancing for darker tones. Even though we have moved on from those early calibration tests, contrast and color calibration for darker skin tones is still a thing.

There are dozens of Asian Ghostbusters. It is a main theme of Korean Drama. I can't count how many Asian Ghostbuster tv series I have watched. No backpacks, but all about busting ghosts.
I love this episode that discussed about how the films include minorities BUT not including the culture of minorities to be diverse. This somehow shows the taken-for-granted ideologies among the producers? As Evelyn said they are being "lazy" in doing the work. They merely include the minorities for the sake of having diversity in the movies.
I am all up for diversity in movies or daytime drama etc. I just felt that it has to also be relevant to the story or scene. For example in a scene that historically only has white people but we see a mix of various different race in them. It's kinda weird. Just like Nigel's scene of class reunion with many docent ethnic background but in reality that won't happen.
It's like making a movie about WWII in Germany and having various ethnicity playing the German troops. That just doesn't make sense. Similarly, having white people playing an Asian role etc. A story about local Hong Kong people and 90% of the actors are white. In new movies that's not relevant to historical accuracy or a particular community, then have all the mix required.
