- This is an alternative Pokemon speedrun, where I choose and use Chikorita (and it's evolutions) to beat the entire game. For more information, I highly recommend reading the FAQ.

This run was alright, I was aiming for a deathless run where all the strats worked out, and I got it. Early game had some pretty bad fights (but that's Chikorita for you), and there were some spots throughout that could go better. Definitely could go sub 4, but not going to grind for that for now. More fun to do more routing of different alt pokes instead!

4:01:00. Mindbogglingly clever. I had no idea you could unlock from choice * like that. Fights and candies were routed to ding level 66 PRECISELY after killing Venusaur. Every input is deliberate, and every choice has its ultimate purpose. This finish is among the most poetic I ever saw.

Can you explain? What's the point of learning Solarbeam over Hidden Power?
Palider he is using an item called the choice specs, which raises his special attack by a lot but only allows the use of one move until the Pokémon faints. By replacing the move he was forced into using, he was able to choose any move he wanted. Absolutely genius I’ve never seen anything like it.
@@Aelfraed26 his poke is holding choice specs, meaning he can't change moves once he's decided to use one so he made it so he would learn a new move at that point to teach it over Hidden Power canceling the propriety of the Specs and allowing him to use another better move for the end of the fight
@@Aelfraed26 While this is 3 years later and the people already responded to you, I also want to add Hidden Power was used on the first four pokemon in Red's ream because it was the best move for them, while after they fainted, switching to Grass Knot was stronger against Snorlax and Blastoise, which is why he wanted to get rid of being locked into Hidden Power (rock). Fucking mindblowing how he routed everything down to that last level, in the last minute, against the last fight in the game.

That ending strat of hitting level 66 at that exact moment to erase Hidden Power with SolarBeam to be able to use a new move with Choice Specs on was mindblowing

I like all three Johto starters equally, but Chikorita was the first one I ever picked. I just thought the little thing was extremely cute, and the fact that it looked like a potato in the overworld helped a lot.
I love chico I agree on you that they are all great starters. It just sucks that chico sucks so much in battle. Also bayleaf is a dope leaf dino but megamium is very underwhelming in my opinion. Which really sucks because I like chico so much 😅
Luis G. Another thing is Ash’s Chikorita/Bayleef in the series was just too adorable so ever since I was a kid I’ve been partial to her.
i picked chico first time because i thought grass was easy mode like in gen 1. bugsy was NOT fun and i had to learn Cut to beat him at lv 22!
@@luukvankrugten7253 Sure, Meganium normally isn't solo sweeper material or anything, but the mainline pokemon pve experience is easy enough to just use whatever pokemon you like and get away with it after enough grinding or a good enough strat. If you like Chikorita, go with Chikorita.

@@manekimoney pikachu% is already a thing and has been completed in a bit under 3 hours (Iirc, exarion is current record holder or at least he was the last time I checked)
Oh and brock is ... something. First you have to grind for quick attack in order to even damage brock and then you have to spam it like a bazillion times, but with a bit of sand attack support its doable because brock is in fact so underwhemling that you can beat him with almost anything ... it just takes a really long time

Great run! It amazes me how many people don’t realize how good Meganium was in Gen 2 competitive. It surpassed the other starters by a significant margin. Feraligatr sucked because it was a physical attacker whose stab was entirely special, and Typhlosion lacked a lot of the movepool needed to effectively sweep. Meganium not only had some of the best tanking tools in the game (including screens and unconditional recovery), but also could run swords dance with Earthquake.

Chikorita was My first pokemon ever, i Even had a cake made with meganium on it when i was a child. Growing up and realising its like the worst starter ever was kinda sad...
I always thought grass types where amazing as a kid, mostly because they can learn Solar Beam and blast anyone off.
Before really learning the game, I wondered why people wouldn't use chikorita as much.
Anyway cyndaquil is way cuter imo.

*HOLY CRUD!* Had to click seeing it was a Johto Region *chikorota* of all things SPEEDRUN record maker; feels unheard of, as I always just see Totadile being the poster boy for speed running in Gen2 & figured in the remake, he’d still be it…. But I guess enough changed in the remake to have (my personal favorite of the 3) chicorita as the poster Pokémon? 😮 🎉 🎊

She should get the fairy typing; it'd make her more interesting and provide better coverage. Plus, it just makes sense! (Renegade Platinum anyone?)
Grass/fairy...basically another Cottonee/Whimsicott. Eh...🤔🤔...aside from the obvious poison double weakness and the plethora of flying types it might do OK.
Also just buff megenium. A slow tanky grass type with meh defenses won't work out. Just give her a cool hidden ability or something to work with she legit got nothing so sad.

Luuk van Krugten it should’ve gotten strength sap in gen 7 since typhlosion got burn up and feraligatr got liquidation so it would make sense for Meganium to get the defensive grass move introduced that gen. Another buff it would appreciate would be rage powder. Pretty much make it a godly support Pokémon because that’s where it can already shine.

I'd love to see torterra, probably the best "worst" starter in pokemon (although sceptile is also a contender for that title). Dunno how well it would do in a speedrun though.
Snivy is far from worst. And i think theres no worst like chikorita as a starter other than pikachu in yellow.

@@laitentierdotcom yeah, considering you have a fully trained Totodile. But in GS it may be possible, but then it can't learn Aurora Beam per level up.

He was using Choice Specs Hidden Power. Replacing Hidden Power with Solar Beam canceled out the Choice Specs

Y do all speedrunners use the girl trainer
General reason is that the girl trainer is typically more cute (I think Werster once said that if he were to speedrun a game for hours, he would much rather stare at a female’s ass as they through their Pokéball rather than the male’s [don’t quote me on that though since I heard it from another comment]).
For this game however, it actually saves more time since the catching tutorial by the female counterpart is longer than the male.

@@thisman723 That whole"staring at a female's ass rather than a male's" crap doesn't make a lick of sense in pokemon games where the ass isn't ever visible. He says in the FAQ that the male does the pokemon catching demonstration faster.
