When I was young and he was old, I got to play Shorty in a cheap 3-cushion tournament with a handicap. He had to go 38 or 39, and I had to go to 13 (the minimum, lol). It was close, but that huge spot got me past Shorty and into the next round. Later, he overheard me gushing to a friend that I had "beat" Shorty, and he laughed. "Yeah, you 'beat' me! I had to go to 107, you had to go to TWO!!! Yeah, you beat me all right...."

I live in Grand Rapids where Harold worst was from I used to hear stories about him from the old timers in the pool halls especially an old pro player named George Ellis. Apparently Harold worst was the best of all time and no one could really beat him at any game he tried. He mastered every game he tried in quick order and gambled with anyone for any amount on his own dime. He would never use a backer and felt it minimized his confidence in his own game. He was always a gentleman and everyone liked him and feared playing him. He really only played as a serious professionally for a short time and died of brain cancer very young as he was hitting his prime.

I love it when the young kids who never saw Harold play say that he would not be great today. Ronnie Allen who saw them all play said unequivocally that Harold was the best that ever lived.
Harold was world champion at 3 cushion and in the year he died he won one pocket, 9 ball and straight pool championships. and remember he was Willie Hoppe,s protege and never really played pocket pool.

Eddie Taylor, and Ralph greenleaf. IDK if the guys of this era were better as we have no one who has created stats to build a measure including variables. *** What I do know is that all champions past and present were exceptional at one pocket, and 3-cushion type games well before 8&9 ball in hand games. Making stats higher. They also mentored each other! I honestly wish I was never taught 8-ball and only taught rail/carom games first then 14.1. 20 years until I started to play these games and I was running back to back racks instead of sporadic racks after about a year. Using conceptually superior techniques, aiming with significantly more effective throttle and compensory accuracy. I had no better equipment or instruction and I'm over 40. If I learned this at 10 I would have been pro by 18 and that is no fantasy guessing postulate. Its related directly to how good I am now and what I have achieved numbers and trophy wise.
