Honestly it must’ve been difficult to keep the source material for Maria’s death. The fact they still made it PG rating despite the scene being dark is still impressive.
I thought it was pretty perfect. They made it dark and heartbreaking. The look on Shadows face when he kneels over Maria's body was enough to rip your heart out! It's like the FNAF movie. They made it dark, but found a good balance between scary and keeping the young audience in mind.
It's insane how tastefully they pulled off her death while paying respect to the source material. Might be a bit of a stretch, but that "those are children" line almost sounds like the writers calling out the SA2/Shadow the Hedgehog writers for delving into such dark subject matter in the first place, but still respecting the seriousness of the original plot they are adapting
I think it was more of Shadow still being a kid during that time, which makes it more tragic since Shadow pretty much lost his childhood and was forced to grow up
Sounds like projecting imo. Plenty of kids’ media has gone over some dark territory. Even a lot of Disney and Pixar movies have genuinely dark or emotional scenes that go over the death of a child, a parent, or a lover. Sonic going down that road is jarring but I don’t think it’s massive enough of a tone shift that it’s a story they never should’ve told.
Though I understand why they did it, part of me was a tad let down they didn't go all in with Maria being gunned down. I mean it's still a family/kids film so they were never going to actually do it...more in line with we older fans endured it so the new fans have to too just so it's fair lol
Not sure why they have to call them out for it, theres a reason why they need to be protected afterall. And if nothing else, its a good cautionary story as to the kinds of things can happen if you don't- revenge, hatred, and regret
I don't understand how Jim Carey is able to act more goofy than an animated hedgehog and simultaneously show despair and sadness in a serious way. Reminder that Jim Carey is a seriously good actor

I had that same look Shadow had when Han Solo died on Illum(Starkiller Base), that's when I developed a huge berserking immature grudge against Ben(Kylo) for taking his own father's life, but all the sudden I realized I made a huge mistake about that child, it was PALPATINE who took Han from which I should've known from the very beginning all along until I felt like it was too god-damn late, I swear to God I felt like I was all about making mistakes but I was too god-damn blind by rage and hate. But with Leia dead, it just hurts or destroys me not to make any amends and it makes feel like I don't even know what the fuck I'm doing or what the hell I'm goin through with either, it just feels like I don't even know how to forgive myself for that mess back there since it never really healed. Any ideas on how to get over something that horrifyingly brutal and emotional such as the deaths of Maria and Han, which I struggle to do so at times.
I like how Walters tried to save them. It proves he cared for Shadow and Maria, but unfortunately the poor guy failed at saving them. I feel bad for Walters.
It was a delteted scene proably to aviod spoliers. But Gerlad always triggered himself with Shadow's quill and Shadow does have immortailty and chaos energy. This is why Shadow was able to survive and Gerlad did the same thing with Shadow's quill which is what kept him live over 100.
What's heartbreaking is that they were RIGHT at the doors. They were so close to escaping. So close to freedom. Then both Shadow and Gerald lost their literal angel of a Friend/Granddaughter, got imprisoned indefinitely, and were forced to relive this horrible night for decades. And the cherry on top; G.U.N took no responsibility and swept it all under the rug, blaming Gerald for it all. He had to sit with that guilt and pain for the next 50 years, being told that HE was responsible for Maria's death. It really hits different when you think about it.
I'm sure he was angry but the soldiers lied at him saying that everything is going to be okay, or gerald told him to calm down so he won't get shot. In Walter's Shadow History we can see how much of a breakdown shadow has when he gets on jail, he was sad, broken by such a big loss, someone who gave his life M E A N I NG. Something that he never got back, just hoping to end it all, and stoo feeling the guilt.

When Gerald goes to get Shadow & Maria, she's holding a guitar. She was playing Live & Learn for Shadow. That memory is what made him wake up in the beginning of the movie. I hope we can get a full scene of Maria playing for Shadow in Sonic 4.
So, I will say, the "including us" actually caught me off guard. I mean, yeah, if you've played Sonic Adventure 2 (or at least have seen gameplay/watched a story video), then you were expecting Gerald to say that they were going to destroy the Earth, but I honestly thought that afterwards they were maybe gonna move on to other planets and stuff, so I really wasn't expecting Gerald to pull a "I don't give a crap about anything but destroying Earth". That could just be because I'm stupid, 'cause the more I think about it, Gerald not caring about themselves makes sense, both 'cause he's too high on revenge, and also that a bonus to his plan would be getting to see Maria afterwards.
"kids, we have to go" "what are you doing? Those are children!" They were KIDS. INCLUDING Shadow. He was frozen for 50 years but he is still a child honestly. Poor boy 😢
Not only is the way Keanu did the breaths of rage so viscerally believable, the match cut between Shadow first feeling his rage in the past and feeling it again, just as wild and hot, in the present at reliving the memory, is absolutely flawless and PERFECT cinematography. Not only that, but the way he releases his chaos energy to power the Eclipse Cannon? By running in a circle faster and faster and faster while just giving in to an extreme emotion, specifically anger? Absolute callback to the first movie, when SONIC did that at the ballpark in rage at always being alone and being seemingly doomed to being alone when all he wants in the world are friends. The movie keeps drawing parallels between Sonic and Shadow. They are both INCREDIBLY alike, in every way, from their early life of isolation, to making a single friend that finally makes them happy. The point where they diverge is where Sonic got to keep his friend and go on to make more... Shadow had his only friend ripped away from him and was thrust back into isolation instead. With nothing to comfort him except the memories of how happy he'd been and how it had all just been taken away. The movie is very pointed with the line 'What would I be without you?' and an IMMEDIATE cut to Shadow. It's the answer. What would Sonic be without Tom's guidance and love? He'd be SHADOW. Just like if Shadow hadn't lost Maria... he'd be SONIC.
3:48 I think the main disadvantage of this film is that we weren't shown Ivo's reflection on the fact that he had a sister and Gerald couldn't love him as much as he loved her. Ivo himself looks about forty years old, was clearly born after Maria's death and, I think, did not even know about her existence or did not know anyone who knew her. Now he is talking to his grandfather, who knew and loved her more than anyone, and now, when Gerald tells Ivo that he is not Maria, Ivo for some reason almost does not react to this, but just stands in disbelief. I think it was worth expanding this dialogue scene, adding a moment where Ivo asks Gerald after these words: "Who is Maria?", or: "Did you know my cousin?". And after Gerald explains everything to him, we would be shown Ivo's feelings about what he said. It could have been a much stronger and more emotional scene than what we got, but unfortunately, we have what we have. In addition, this moment would also make it completely clear to people like me, who were not familiar with Sonic's lore before these films and had no idea about Ivo Robotnik's relatives. And this film behaves as if everyone already knows that Maria is Ivo's cousin, and does not comment on this fact in any way. But not everyone knew this, including me, and that's why I had to guess it myself throughout the film, and that's not very correct. In short, the film should have given at least a couple of minutes to the fact that Ivo and Maria are actually cousins, so that everyone would understand exactly everything
@@Aussieroth7 Yeah, I've fixed about the cousins. But I disagree with the second thing, because we know that Maria died fifty years ago and she was at least ten years old at that time, which means that if Ivo had been the same age as her, he would now be over sixty. However, he looks much younger, so I am convinced that in the universe of these films he was born after Maria's death, had never seen her in person and most likely knew little or nothing about her
The emotion in Shadow from Maria's death, and when it cuts back to reality and his rage is beautiful. It's so raw and pure, truly brought a tear from my face. I feel his pain
I quite like the more personal connection Eggman has to Gerald in this movie. He had literally zero attachment to his Grandfather (or Maria for that matter) in SA2 and cared solely for his experiments. But here, when Gerald outright rejected him by saying "you're no Maria", you could see the heartbreak in his reaction. Brilliant reimagining of a well known Sonic story.
1:54 Last moment before pain, loss and grief killed Gerald's humanity side. 3:52 When Gerald said those words, Ivo must crossing his line one way or another by fighting for his own life and saving the world which he wants to conquer (As Gerald's plan also including suicide plan).
I originally predicted that Walters' backstory was that he took the shot that killed Maria and lived to regret it, turns out I was wrong. He risked his life to protect Shadow and Maria, what a hero.
“They want to take Shadow away from us Maria!” That just shows that they saw Shadow as family while other saw him as a dangerous entity… And to think they were going to do the same thing to Sonic and Tails because they were aliens like Shadow
GUN have a real habit of pissing off aliens that want to do nothing but just live their lives on earth. Seriously why do they exist, when all the aliens they've met at this point are either non-hostile or manipulated to be hostile.
Even as a Tails fan I convinced myself that Shadow has the best story in BOTH media. Games: He first wants revenge because he thinks Maria wanted that, but then he discovered that she wanted him to help humanity and protect them from evil and destruction. Movie: He wants revenge because he had the best relationship with her like they were siblings and humanity k*lled her for no reason.
Yeah, they portrayed Gerald's anger (and Jim Carrey acted this so well) in such a powerful way. Like you said, it has poisoned him, overtaken his mind and body. There's nothing worth living for him anymore.
I like that they didn’t have a camera shot of Maria death up close. We didn’t have to see her to confirm she is, we have to see through Gerald’s and Shadow‘s face to see it so. 🥺
In the game, Shadow’s sole motivation was Maria’s wish (or what he believed to be her wish). If she wanted him to be a McDonald’s employee, he would’ve done it. He wanted to destroy the world because he thought she wanted revenge and decided to save it as soon as he realized it’s not what she wanted. He literally had a 180 change in his attitude just based on what Maria wanted. Not because it was the right thing to do, not because he had a change of heart, but because it’s what Maria wanted. Here they took that away. Not only Shadow doesn’t know what her wish would’ve been, but Gerald makes it clear it’s irrelevant whether or not she would’ve wanted this and what really matters is that the world deserves to be punished because of what happened. This makes Shadow’s eventual change a choice of his own and based on a change of heart he actually went through (which we can actually see him beginning to experience after the Tom incident). The movie actually allows Shadow to grow on his own and develop his own morality. This makes movie Shadow a much more compelling character than SA2 Shadow.
Weird that Gerald already looked 110 years old in 1974, I think they should’ve just had Jim Carrey look like how he did in the first film but with thinning grey hair & the beginning of an exaggerated moustache.

Honestly it must’ve been difficult to keep the source material for Maria’s death. The fact they still made it PG rating despite the scene being dark is still impressive.
True, I can’t imagine the series being PG, if they adapted the original game plot where they had a soldier shoot Maria herself more “purposefully”.
I mean not really. This is a really good attempt but it’s a more sanitized version compared to the game lol.
@@alphazero4880 true. I assumed they go PG-13 If they adopted the original game content. Not that I find that an issue.
@@Nightlizard1564sorry dude, but even in adult films they ussualy dont show children get shoot by the military lol
I wouldn’t say they’re calling the SA2 writers out. If they were, why would they make Maria die in this movie?
I don't understand how Jim Carey is able to act more goofy than an animated hedgehog and simultaneously show despair and sadness in a serious way. Reminder that Jim Carey is a seriously good actor
Robotnik needed NO bio lizard for this cannon.
yeah because biolizard didn't exist in movie.

"You have nothing down there. No one who cares about you."
The fact Ivo dedicated his final good-bye to Stone means he realized that wasn't true.
I kid you not, when Gerald said that, in my mind I literally shouted, “STONE! STONE! STONE!” 😅
Straight up the greatest video game movie ever made
And yet, still no Oscar nomination!
Ooh that look of rage and grief on Shadow’s face gives me the chills.
I think gun is going to turn evil next movie he was the only good guy there
This would've never happened if the solider just held his fire

You just asked basically the impossible
Even if all guns are gone from universe, Maria somehow will still get shot.

G.U.N. should consider getting a lawyer for their asses and then be charged for taking Maria's life.
3:35 Agent Rock we don’t deserve you but you care
“Agent Rock”😂
1:24 Her Gasp and 1:28 her last scream. But how did her grandfather survived the blast?!
I didn’t noticed her last scream. And also, did you mean how did her grandfather and Shadow survived? They both also could have been killed
@traydaniel0403 yes, how did her grandfather survived. I know shadow can survive, but that blast should have taken out her grandfather as well.
@traydaniel0403 The explosion itself may not have been deadly but falling debris could've hit her and killed her.
1:48
Oh, yeah. There are big stones and debris that are around her.
It was a delteted scene proably to aviod spoliers. But Gerlad always triggered himself with Shadow's quill and Shadow does have immortailty and chaos energy. This is why Shadow was able to survive and Gerlad did the same thing with Shadow's quill which is what kept him live over 100.
1:29
This was pointed out to me elsewhere, but i cannot unhear Maria screaming.
Unless its a whisper saying "Maria" or everyone yelling "Maria"...
Everyone thought they were gonna clap and cheer over this scene but in reality tears were shed
I can’t believe Maria is dead and now Shadow is very angry and he wants revenge
💀 angry is a huge understatement.
I was exactly like that when I lost Han Solo because of Darth Sidious pulling Ben's strings, Snoke was just a proxy of Sidious's.
I will never get that line out of my head. "THOSE ARE CHILDREN!"
@2:21 honestly I wanted to see Shadow fighting the soldiers in Rage in the flash back!
It wouldn’t be a kids movie otherwise, it’s be Pg-18
I'm pretty sure shadow was still a kid in the flashback not knowing how to fight
Same here
I'm sure he was angry but the soldiers lied at him saying that everything is going to be okay, or gerald told him to calm down so he won't get shot. In Walter's Shadow History we can see how much of a breakdown shadow has when he gets on jail, he was sad, broken by such a big loss, someone who gave his life M E A N I NG. Something that he never got back, just hoping to end it all, and stoo feeling the guilt.
Me too
2:12 This transition hit me when I saw it in theaters. Like, this is a kids movie and I'm 30. Incredible performance.

When Gerald goes to get Shadow & Maria, she's holding a guitar. She was playing Live & Learn for Shadow. That memory is what made him wake up in the beginning of the movie. I hope we can get a full scene of Maria playing for Shadow in Sonic 4.

3:10 Me when I finished watching Knuckles series and realizing that he never was the main character
Well, actually, nevermind, Maria is probably somewhere in Heaven, and we all know Gerald wouldn't be sent there.
"kids, we have to go"
"what are you doing? Those are children!"
They were KIDS.
Except for one thing, they're cousins, and they're roughly the same age I believe. Still... Gerald is cold in this.
@@Aussieroth7 Yeah, I've fixed about the cousins. But I disagree with the second thing, because we know that Maria died fifty years ago and she was at least ten years old at that time, which means that if Ivo had been the same age as her, he would now be over sixty. However, he looks much younger, so I am convinced that in the universe of these films he was born after Maria's death, had never seen her in person and most likely knew little or nothing about her
@@ЕвгенийСучков-ц8щ Yet Jim Carry is 63, mid-late 50's when he started... The guy's a damn unicorn.
@@Aussieroth7 Wow, really, I just noticed it now. But, nevertheless, we are now talking about the character Ivo, not about the actor
@@ЕвгенийСучков-ц8щ True, But I'm thinking he'd be in his fifties anyway. Either way, it'll be interested to see how this lore is expanded.
2:12 John Wick mode : On
The emotion in Shadow from Maria's death, and when it cuts back to reality and his rage is beautiful. It's so raw and pure, truly brought a tear from my face. I feel his pain
"You're no Maria."
Bro... Imagine your Dad saying "You're not good enough for me."
Jims acting chops are firing on all cylinders in this movie.
3:26 this is the saddest scene of eggman realizing that no one cares about him.
"those are kids" makes you remember shadow himself is a kid... maria never grew up he has the wisdom of a child... he's just a very angry kid...
3:09
That's probably the angriest "What?" I've heard
and immediately after 3:12 Carrey sounds just like Mike Pollock's Eggman
2:24 had the scene of shadow mad but it’s da best
Imagine the Tokyo fight if shadow was like this
I quite like the more personal connection Eggman has to Gerald in this movie.

If Gerald was 64 years old in 1974 and 114 years old in 2024, is that makes sense?
Gerald uses the energy in Shadow's quill to extend his life. He only needed to extend his life long enough until he could enact his revenge.
@JH24821 gotcha 👍
Well, it’s possible to live past 110 in real life! Just ask the supercenturians who is still living at 110 years or more of age.
@@anthonyguarino4242Yeah, but usually, they look like living fossil at that age.

“They want to take Shadow away from us Maria!” That just shows that they saw Shadow as family while other saw him as a dangerous entity…
And to think they were going to do the same thing to Sonic and Tails because they were aliens like Shadow
I felt the same way when they took everything, revenge poisons me. I had no choice until someone else will stop and comfort me 😢
Yeah, they portrayed Gerald's anger (and Jim Carrey acted this so well) in such a powerful way. Like you said, it has poisoned him, overtaken his mind and body. There's nothing worth living for him anymore.
I’ve always felt sympathy for Shadow

I like that they didn’t have a camera shot of Maria death up close. We didn’t have to see her to confirm she is, we have to see through Gerald’s and Shadow‘s face to see it so. 🥺
Okay but the amount of people in my theater that cheered when Maria died was wild😭😭😂
It would have been cool if after Gerald said you are no maria ivo should have gotten flashbacks of stone
3:32
Ivo thinking to himself: "actually there is this one guy he makes a really good latte with steamed Austrian goat milk" 😢🥛🐐
Commader walters saying stop not at the children proves shadow was about 7 years old
In the game, Shadow’s sole motivation was Maria’s wish (or what he believed to be her wish).
“What is that thermonuclear gerbil doing” 😂
This scene is brilliant. Gerald's evil, Shadow's Rage, and the silent judgment that only Ivo realises is approaching.
Maria’s death made me cry so much when I saw this in the theaters and I was in tears 😭
What is that thermonuclear gerbil doing?
I spat my drink at that!
3:10 reminds me of guardians of the galaxy 2 when peter said that .
Such skill. Such acting. Carrey really nails it here, managing to play two roles at the same time.
3:49 Never thought I'd feel bad for the main villain of two movies in this series. That was incredibly cold.
At 1:55, 1:58, Gerald and Shadow start to get sad to remember Maria's death.
Weird that Gerald already looked 110 years old in 1974, I think they should’ve just had Jim Carrey look like how he did in the first film but with thinning grey hair & the beginning of an exaggerated moustache.
