- I'm not even sure if this was a foraging walk, or if the basket was just an excuse to get us out of the house into the lovely woods.

"My Basket Is Still Empty, and I Think I am OK With That" would be an awesome album title. 😎🧑🎤
True
Hm I think a audiobook on foraging would be better for such a title
Experimental Progressive Indie Band
Perhaps the title of one’s memoirs later on in life… 😂
I would title one of the songs Accidental Swale which is what seems to have happened with that rut where everything was greener.
Whilst you may have come away empty handed, the rest of us certainly didn't. Always learn something new from watching your videos. Thanks.
"The moss lovers are going to be in their element today. And so we are!!!😊🙏❤
i don't see an empty basket, i see a gentleman enjoying a walk in a beautiful setting, it's nice and relaxing and i enjoyed it
A few years ago TH-cam randomly suggested your channel (I think it was a scam bate video) I'm so grateful for that because after a poopy week your videos relax me and make me happy. You are such a calm level headed and likable person. I love how interested you are in nature and the way you share your knowledge. I like your positivety and how smart you are. Greetings from Germany! ❤
Came for Mange Trout, stayed for everything.
Relating to the airplane noise:
Monotonic noises can be very calming too, even if they're not what you might expect in a forest walk. You can't stop it at that moment anyway so it's best to try to find joy in it. Also, the pilot is probably enjoying nature from a different perspective, in a way that happens to be noisy
Yeah, it's all about perspective. We have a colony of rooks that live in the tall trees in our little bit of woodland - their raucous calls can be heard in some of my garden videos. I have come to appreciate their noise as just a different kind of birdsong. So many things in the world are like this - their effect is not necessarily dependent on what they are, but rather on how we choose to receive them.
Perception is a key lesson in Daosim. Birds are part of nature, like us so one need to adjust their perspective of beauty to truly appreciate them.
Regarding the airplane daoist principle says:
To be in harmony with the dao (let's call it natural energy), one must not get wound up about things they cannot control. Otherwise it will control us, our thoughts and feelings. Therefore the way to handle these situations is Bruce Lee's famous words: 'Be water, my friend.' Internalize and allow the annoyances to pass.
Anyways, that's just one philosophical perspective. For a nature loving country boy who now lives far from nature in a big, stinky city, I envy that forest walk. Thank you for sharing, Mr. Reverend Shrimp.

@@AtomicShrimp One of the weird things about lockdown was that I didn't hear the noise of the busy dual carriageway by my house, it felt so eerily quiet I couldn't sleep at night because I was so used to it
The joy of flying up there in the sunshine 😊
Your basket may be empty, but my soul is well fed by this delightful video. It’s so nice to visit a different location with better weather than my current location.
Thank you for not whipping your camera around quickly and allowing us to look and meander. It’s very appreciated. I also appreciate all the extra information you give and stopping to investigate the small things.
Unsuccessful, but not fruitless.
Hello, moss lover here. Have injured my back and can't get into the woods. Perfect video for me this time.
You can ask someone to bring the moss indoors to you 😊
May you make a full recovery
@@dijosto Thank you.
Make a moss terrarium
Lovely walk in the woods. Thank you!
I have the Python sketch stuck in my head now: “And now, No. 1: The Larch. The Larch. And now: No. 3: The Larch.”
I think the main message of this video really resonates with me and could not have come at a better time. I started working in a research lab as an undergrad, so doing good research and consequently getting good data is pivotal. However, recently I have been struggling with getting viable results from my experiments which in turn makes me dread having to redo the tedious, mentally demanding long experiments all over again. However, by being okay with disappointment and trying again really hones in on improving our resiliency.
i absolutely LOVED this video. I found your channel a bit before lockdown happened.
I love the variety your channel offers.. i've watched MOST of your older videos as well.
But this.. this just feels right..
I dont mean to do what others do and ask you to make a video to my liking..
BUT im sure others wouldnt mind another video like this but where you DONT cut the camera out so its an hour long!
Anyways, i really liked this video and im glad i live on a timeline where someone like you exists too
Who knows, perhaps your old foraging basket is dropping spoors on the forest floor? You could be inoculating this beautiful place with chanterelles and other lovely fungi.
It’s always nice to come and watch some of your videos and just forget about everything for a few minutes
A moss-carpeted forest with dappled sunshine is my favourite place to be in the whole world. It soothes my soul and I feel at home the way I never feel anywhere else. Thanks so much for sharing this.
I absolutely couldn’t agree with you more.no other place on earth can heal your soul. Nice comment 😊
The hottest new vegan restaurant - the squirrels lunch table
Reverse psychology - leave the basket at home, works every time when I leave the house without my brolly ⛈ tut.
😂
It's still a wonderful thing to think that there are still some children building dens and enjoying nature like I used to. Too many are stuck with their faces on a phone or computer screen.
If you changed your front door to be circular and painted it green you could easily be mistaken for a hobbit. You already have Frodo’s trousers and you spend your time foraging, cooking and eating which is a sure sign of a hobbit. Your only issue is the size and hairiness of your feet.
If he's a hobbit... would the scammers be orcs?
I've thought Mike was a wizard since I saw him carve his spoon staff!
Perhaps he's using an elven cloaking spell on his feet
The knowledge you share brings me so much joy that I carry in daily life when I see something I know about, because you explained it! Thank you very much for everything you stop to explain, point out, give context for.
Going for a walk in the forest and not knowing what any of the plants are is like walking through an art gallery with all the paintings turned facing the walls they're mounted on.
And the coolest thing is you never stop learning, nature is the best teacher. 👍
The worst day foraging in the woods is better than the best day in an office.
I bet that forest is absolutely popping with Chanties right about now. I'm in the PNW and found several gallons of them in one single patch recently, along with almost as many lobster mushrooms... They like fairly similar habitats, though lobsters will also grow out of sandy soil or even gravel.
The weird extra rain we got this year is kicking things off early; matsutakes, normally found in mid-November onwards, are already coming up in higher elevations.
My basket runneth over as a result of watching this.
Thank you for the unexpected guided forest meditation 😊
"Some kids"? No, Pooh and Piglet!
Thank you, Mike ♥️
Any chance of a slow TV hour or two in that lovely mossy wood? Close-ups of any detail you like and birdsong thrown in.
I must have been a squirrel in a previous life as I love your wooded walks videos 😊
I love the walks. It’s always nice to forage but it’s beautiful to be out anyway
What you said about the aircraft noise is a good mindset to have. Sometimes I get annoyed at aeroplanes and cars ruining the peace of nature, but accepting it and knowing it will soon pass will ultimately mean I enjoy nature more. Thanks for that bit of wisdom.
I sometimes think: what if I could just attach this or that worry that I have been carrying, to that plane, and let it be carried away from me, into the distance; this sometimes seems to work if you can get into it.
@@AtomicShrimp I guess when one of your worries is the plane noise it literally works 😂
@@AtomicShrimp Thoughts travel faster than light, they definitely can catch up with this plane, or any plane. My thoughts visit you often, even thought I can't.
Slow TV request!! Squirrel eating a pine cone on a mossy stump 😅
I second that.
Your physical basket may be empty, but not your metaphorical one. That old adage about bad helping us appreciate good comes to mind, and I think the lack of anything here that could go on your dinner table helped you appreciate nature itself more, even if just a little. Plus, Eva seems like she enjoyed that long walk, so there's that!
I enjoy these videos of yours. You remind me to go outside for a little bit. On the craziest, busiest days, I can surely carve out 30 minutes for a walk.
the woods are so pretty! i love these videos
You’re nothing short of a one-way therapist. The nature helps as well.
It's so nice how much you emphasize that coming back empty handed from a foraging trip like this is nothing to be disappointed for. Some friends and I like to go mushroom foraging once a year. Sometimes we find plenty, sometimes close to nothing. It's the experience that counts and the day spent in nature with people you like.
We're still laughing about the one year when we found exactly 2 tiny edible mushrooms and grilled them after returning home for a quick snack. We call it the "mushroom feast" to this day🍄
I went out for a walk in the woods last week, thinking that the rain and cooler temps might have brought out the mushrooms. Like you, no luck. Found plenty of inedible earthballs and bracket fungi though, and spent a couple of pleasant hours listening to birds and taking in the smells and sights of the summer-autumn boundary. Plus, I found loads of places which look super-promising for mushrooms a bit later on in the season.
I do love moss & ferns. So pretty!
GORGEOUS. What a feast!!!❤ Thank you very much, Atomic Shrimp.
Mindfulness with Mike.
Sometimes you go out to forage and you get nothing apart from a good walk and time in nature. So you suffer a setback but still help yourself by having the physical exercise and help your mental state.
Also good to see Eva in her element sniffing and listening to the sounds smells etc you can’t detect. I often wonder what’s going through my dogs minds when we walk in the woods and see them sniffing etc. I think it would be interesting to find out.
Nice video enjoy your walks👍
Between nothing and something un-identifiable, your sensible searcher takes nothing.
The peace and joy you experience in these rambles are enough reward, methinks. Thank you for sharing these moments with us.
this video plays out like one of those books that used to get read to me as a child, The Tiger Who Came To Tea / We're Going On a Bear Hunt type of feeling.
Have you tried Mike's "Stories & Writings" playlist? With Mr. Bargain's Bargains, Bernard the Extraordinary Moth and the Hairy Caterpilar... if not then you absolutely should!
Get yourself a cuppa and... 🐾
I need this "pill" of calm and serenity so much today... thank you :)
I think tomorrow I'm going mushroom foraging too :) It was way to dry this summer before :)
Leave the basket at home but put a hanky in your pocket. Kind of hedging your bets. The walk was beautiful.
Lovely video. As someone who can't get out much I really enjoyed this. Thank you.
Thank you for the walk.🙂 I cannot go for a walk myself any more , so this is a comforting substitute. 🐝🌲🌳🍃🕸🦋
Spotted Wood? Speckled Wood, surely! When I was young they were really based down your neck of the woods and we didn't see them at all around the Humber Estuary. In fact, the one in my collection was courtesy of my friend who regularly holidayed with his family in Ilfracombe. These days I could catch one in my garden most years, were I still a collector.
I always avoid plantations when I'm looking for chanterelles. It's like the forest floor is too "sterile" and open for them to grow there. I find chanterelles love the old, dense, "untouched" forests with old rotting logs, thick moss and undergrowth. Also, the weather plays a signifigant part, very dry summers/autumn means there won't be much, if any at all. But unfortunately the old-growth forests are becoming less common because of human activity. It's very sad, as we do really benefit from their amazing ecosystem
Well, this was pleasant, thats for sure. Its been too long sinch i had a nice walk in woods.
Dad - you've got sand on your nose now, you look silly. Eva - looking back - Mom did you hear that, Dad said I looked silly. 🤣🤣🤣
No fungi. But we had fun, guy.
The wander is enough. Foraging is a bonus. That’s always my mindset.
Same here, even though it rained here in Central Europe finally after like 2 months of drought and there were horrible floods just within 100km near of me I didn't find much of anything edible on a stroll through local forest. Which might also mean that somebody already went and took everything, lol
That's the problem with people 'promoting' foraging, eventually too many people are doing it leaving areas depleted and potentially degraded.
@@MephitisUKI used to worry about this, but then you look at mainland Europe where people go out in their thousands, possibly millions, every year and they always come back. I’ve come to the conclusion that saying foraging depletes the mushrooms is like saying picking apples harms the tree.
@@markgledhill79 Mainland Europe is massive, plenty of room for reservoirs of untouched stuff to forage, the UK is in the bottom 10% of the world for biodiversity. Alongside that with a 70% depletion in the worlds populations of mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians since the 1970's and a quarter of the remaining species are under threat of extinction I personally think we should be just looking and not touching or taking.
There's an impressive amount of Rhododendron in these woods.
You need to look for the right soil. The greyish hard type often tends to grow Aldis.
Maybe it's just a matter of expectations and hopes? I don't forage, the thought of eating something I picked up in the wild freaks me out, so when I go for a walk in the woods, it's for a day like you've just shown, little discoveries everywhere. Thanks for the reminder, to enjoy the moments. I thought the giant earth dents were bomb craters, I find sink holes a bit more threatening, just because they can be there and you won't know it, until they swallow you. There seem to be several facebook foraging groups from your area, one goes out on Sunday mornings; but, I suspect you already know that. Much love to Jenny, Eva and you, thanks for sharing your adventure.
A SLOW TV of this would be so phenomenal.
This is such a great place for some nature photography, particularly macro photos. I could spend so long just taking pictures of those mossy ruts
Thank you , hope all is well.
Never had much luck with chanterelles in England, they're either too few or already picked.
This 'find a mushroom I can eat' series will be interesting.
this is so cozy with my little set up!! im in a tent on a mattress in my little den watching this video while eating 2 seperate bags 1 of mixed nuts and 1 of mixed fruit i got inspired with the trail mix and eaven bought kabanoszy because of the pebble video! this vid was deffinitely chill and wholesome!
If that shelter was built by kids, they did a pretty good job!
Luckilly you are not foraging for survival. Imagine aincient humans living of hunting and foraging, a bad season and empty "baskets" would be one of the worst things that could happen. We are truly fortunate to live in a time and place like we do.
Nearly 1 million subs 💪
Ive just tested positive for covid, this is just what I needed..a vurtual walk in the woods while im unable to run! 🥰
Rest well 😷
You have sand on your nose, you look silly - Can I tell you how much that made me laugh, and how much I love your dog!
Your 'Spotted Wood' butterfly, I think you will is a 'Speckled Wood', just for the record. Richard
Perhaps the pro's have visited and gathered the three tons of mushrooms that were in the area.
loved this video. just a quick suggestion if you are interested. If you upscale the video to 2k or 4k before uploading youtube allows a higher bitrate for those resolutions and you can get a much better quality video out of a low resolution video. only really needed for videos like this one that have so much detail all over the screen.
I've experimented a bit with that and it just seemed to make TH-cam's downscaled versions even worse - the sweet spot (without me actually recording and editing in 4k, which is a bit too much for my setup) seems to be to set a really high bit rate on the native resolution render - even then, TH-cam sometimes mangles it - apparently they reserve the best performance for premium members and give everyone else a purposely slightly degraded experience.
When I have time off from a regular work day I take time to pause & listen to the din of rush hour traffic. Grateful that I am not contributing to the hustle & bustle.
Present! Moss is my thing! It's the first thing I noticed, sooooo muuuuch moss! 😻
It might be interesting to set up a trail cam, focused on one of those little stumps, to see if you could capture video of a squirrel eating the seeds from a cone.
I see squirrels doing that on my back fence. Large conifers a few feet away. They leave the shreds on my deck for me to sweep up.
All the yetis, ghosts, headless horsemen &bigffot & big-cats muroaming around the British countryside must have eaten the Chanterelles.
Thanks for a nice walk in the woods.
The forest is beautiful and peaceful.
The kids ‘den’ is actually a rudimentary wicker man that the locals use for the autumnal solstice sacrifice. Just so international viewers know.
MN here, had a big bloom of elm caps and deer mushrooms. It’s that season
I don't think we had enough rain it's been quite warm mushrooms like damp cool conditions
This was very relaxing, thank you! Hi Eva! 🐾
Thank you for being an actually really great role model/example. You seem to be genuinely good man and you try to live by that which you say and share.
Thank you for sharing some peace and calm. Much needed these days.
Maybe a stupid question, but would it be feasible to go back to your old haunt, pickup a set of mushrooms and try to spread their spores in this woodland area? Just giving your foraging a head start.
Oh, hello there :) what a great start of the morning!
very peaceful , with all the rushing around and stupid "consume" society we seem to be turning into , I can always return to equilibrium with your informative and calm videos. Thank you sir , It is very much appreciated.
Thank you for the video!
You’re not alone. Was out the other day in Hampshire and came back empty. On the same date a few years ago I filled the basket with ceps. Everything just seems a bit late this year… again
That'll be the geo engineering
What fortuitous timing. I need soothing, and moss is just the balm for me.
I kept smiling in mossy love and thinking it couldn't be any more beautiful, then 8:10 . I actually exclaimed, "Oh my god." And tears sprung to my eyes. Your basket is empty, my foot. Your basket is full. I think I will try to go out and visit all the mossy patches on the grounds tomorrow. I know where each of them is.
The distant noise of humanity tends to make me feel more satisfied in my aloneness. More alone in my aloneness. Not lonely, just appreciative of me being alone in my aloneness while everyone else is off doing business. I'm pretty sure I failed to deliver whatever message I intended, but, there it is.
Oh, and the rock video, the journal you were keeping, reminded me of something another one of my favorite Brits, Irving Finkel, of cuneiform fame, has started, The Great Diary Project. Based, in part, on his study of the extant cuneiform tablets in the British Museum and what they contain, or do not, Mr. Finkel created a repository for the words, memories and impressions of everyday people in hopes to inform those in the future. It is, in my estimation, a good place for one to leave his or her journals, or the journals of those you love who no longer have need of journaling. There is an American one, too, called American Diary Project, for any other Americans who read this far.
Another weird year for the timings of plants, I'm seeing a lot of crocus popping up at the moment so they're convinced it's spring
The wood’s look so pretty at this time of year & so claiming & peaceful, sorry you came back empty handed ☹️Thanks for sharing Atomic shrimp 🦐🤗🍃🌳
Wow I wasn't expecting a wysa session in middle of video lol (the airplane bit)
it sounded so much like one of their hypnosis sections tho.. I think you can be a good voice actor for dream hypnosis or environment setting like that
I could see him as the Stanly parable narrator to be honest
Doesn't know the names of trees because you can't eat it? :)
I was back in monty python world when you said "the larch".
my chanterelles have disappeared from my favourite spot. Sad.
i'm sure i'm not the first to say it, but i love your foraging videos and bits simply bc all the plants you're looking for are the herbs they had in warrior cats- herbs or plants or cat name bits, but i never understood as a kid that warrior cats was in the uk and that's why i thought a lot of the plants were made up or at least rare or too wild to ever be found by people 😂
Regarding the sinkholes: could these be bomb craters from WW II? In my parts of the woods (GER, not UK) there are similar looking overgrown craters that came from allied bombers emptying their holds after a raid on the nearby city. The idea was that they didn't want to risk the return flight with live ammunition on board.
Thanks for bringing us along!
None needed. It was lovely, especially the tracking.
Lovely, so peaceful x
I think the pits are not excavations, when ancient trees die and rot the below suface roots rot as well, 500 years of tree growth would move a lot of earth which other trees will thrive in. Another great soothing video, thankyou. By the way I have fished all along chesil beach over the last 50 years. and I know where I am on the beach because Im local.
+/- 10.32 two days ago I noticed one of my pigeons took effort to make 2 trips
removing the egg shells from her nest.. she flew quite a distance to get rid of both parts.
( probably trying to be a smart ass.. and not to inform the magpies about her chick. )
I hadn't thought of that but it makes a lot of sense
@@AtomicShrimp yes.. some pigeons are smart little b*ggers,
I did some "experiments" feeding them
and nevermind their behaviour is quite autistic,
they do have some tricks in their sleeve.
I am looking forward to hopefully seeing you cultivate fungi in your own garden as it's a perfectly possible opportunity
