    I use my BooKoo for everything because it's the most accurate scale I own. If I can't see the numbers because my item is too large, I just use the app.

    The little normcore espresso scale is really good for about $50 if I remember right. I have that for espresso and the full size largest timemore for pour over and those 2 together are about the price of a Bookoo.
    If you don’t need the app connectivity that’s the way I would go. Both feel sufficiently water resistant as well.
    The bookoo however will be a quick competitor to the Acaia scales.

      the bookoo is basically just the (slightly better) acaia but without the brand-name upcharge.

    I've had the $15 scale you show for my pour over (and other kitchen uses) and it's worked fine for years now. I use a cheap jeweler's scale to weigh the beans, though (a totally unnecessary .01g precision). I don't do espresso so I don't need the small size for the actual brewing.

    Yeah. I’m on my third cheap ~$15 mini scale, the first two having broken, presumably due to moisture ingress.
    Bought a Bookoo a few weeks ago and waiting for it to arrive (+ their wireless pressure profiler kit for Cafelat Robot).

    I have bought sooooooooo many scales over the last year, which has cost me more than just buying a lunar (although as a Canadian...our dollar currently...ouch) and I stopped when I got the Themis. It's AWESOME. I have a V3 Gaggiuino setup at work and the Themis' BT connects immediately for brew-by-weight. It's so small and great, and I can't wait to see how it matures. I was super excited to see you review one, it's a great way to spend a saturday morning :).

    I got mine because I wanted a scale that small for my "travel" setup. We spend 3 days a week with my mother in-law as my wife and I only have a 4-day work week, and this scale matches up with my J-Ultra and Picopresso nicely for that. Though I find myself using it as my go-to scale at home too.
    I'm not so concerned with splitting shots because that is only something I'd consider when making drinks in volume, often times for people who don't really care about coffee quality to begin with. In that case I just use volumetrics. If what I was looking for was a smaller volume of coffee, I'd pull two double ristrettos or simply use 12-14 gram baskets.
    One feature I do miss from my cheap scale is the doble tab feature. If I double tapped the power button it would reset time and weight simultaneously. I've not found a way to do this on the Bookoo. It isn't a big deal, but I didn't realize how much I'd miss that feature.
    Thank you for the well-made video, as always!

  • @taejaskudva2543

    I know that precision is in service to repeatability, but how much does a scale that measures tenths improve the taste of a cup? I won't start espresso until the meticulous get gets delivered (it i break down and get a robot once it's back in stock), so all I'm doing is pour overs and the like with the OXO or Escali kitchen scales we've had forever. Once i get close, i add a couple beans at a time to make the scale tick up to the number i want. If I'm typically doing 15 or 20 gram doses, how much does the fact that i might be at 15.1 vs. 15.6 affect the coffee you're making? And how much does it affect espresso? I'm curious if anyone has done any testing over several rounds to see the impact.

    • @Kiaulen
      @Kiaulen 17 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      No testing, but like you said, it's the difference between being off by up to a gram (+/- 0.5) vs being off by a tenth (+/- 0.05). For something measured in the dozens or hundreds like filter, it probably doesn't matter.
      But espresso is typically measured as a 10-20 gram dose to a 20-50 output. When the numbers are smaller, the variance matters more.
      And subjectively, the scale I own that only measures in whole grams is the worst scale I own on a lot of other metrics as well. You're usually not paying only for the precision

  • @WushuTaz
    @WushuTaz 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

    Another huge positive about this scale is that it connects to their own pressure sensor that is also reasonably priced compared to the competition. You can do excellent pressure profiling with the Flair or any espresso machine with an E61 grouphead. It also syncs with their app and apps like Beanconqueror. I'm not sure why reviewers aren't mentioning this.

  • @ziptiefighter
    @ziptiefighter 17 วันที่ผ่านมา +2

    One maddening thing with my scale is when the intermittent-dripstart results in the scale thinking the pull is complete (because of 'too much' time between drips), so it stops registering further weight even though there's a long way to go.
    *I hope that's not the case with the Bookoo.

    • @BooKooCoffee
      @BooKooCoffee 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      Hi. Here's BOOKOO. We've considered this issue. The auto mode currently works like this: To stop extraction, you can remove the cup (the timer stops when the flow rate is zero) OR press the left button briefly.
      However, some users have suggested that they'd like the timer to stop when the liquid flow stops, even though this might cause the issue you mentioned. We're considering allowing users to OTA and customize their preferred auto mode through the app.

    • @ziptiefighter
      @ziptiefighter 16 วันที่ผ่านมา

      @@BooKooCoffee Thankyou for chiming in. It'd be great if flow-sensitive scales like these would disregard intermittent flow for the first ~10 seconds, and thereafter auto-stop when true stoppage of flow occurs. I don't use my current scale for espresso because of its tendency to auto-stop prematurely. It's more hassle than it's worth. And I'm not going to bother with another scale until I'm convinced of fundamental performance issues. I applaud Bookoo for making a more reasonably priced and small scale that fits in tighter quarters such as that of the Robot. I have a robot and La Pavoni lever. Real estate is at a premium. It'd be great if scale designers would also use a more rectangular design (longer fore-aft than side-to-side). This would allow more space for internal componentry, allow more space for somewhat larger cups (as was addressed in this vid), and yet still allow the scale to comfortably fit in small spaces.
      BTW, what is "OTA"? Open to all? Over the air? Like open source?

    • @BooKooCoffee
      @BooKooCoffee 16 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      @@ziptiefighter Thanks for sharing. "OTA" means Over-The-Air Technology, which allows users to upgrade the software of scale via Bluetooth. Just like app version upgrades.

    I have a ~40$-ish scale, I do both espresso and filter. I've been thinking about upgrading to something that can track flow and is a bit faster then what I have. The price point of bookoo and the overall feature set is really appealing. What might be a deal breaker for me is the .1g accuracy. If I buy a new scale, I want it to do 0.01 so that I can do water recipes as well. My softened water is too soft and I want to try mineralizing it to get less sour espresso. If this had .01 g it would be perfect but this way it's probably a deal breaker for me. Also the size bothers me a bit. I'm doing mostly V60 for filter but if I have coffee that brews ok in a Chemex, I'll use it too and it just seems a bit too small for that. Also, I like that my current scale can double as a kitchen scale, I just put a bowl on it and I can weight anything. This one doesn't seem like it can do that.

    Yeah, it's nice to have, but donno man, price is still crazy. The thing is that it's a really nice product, but it doesn't really help making better coffee.
    For espresso i use a scale advertised for jewels (similar to Weightman), price starts at 3$, 0.1g acc, very accurate, instant response, no timer (no problem), feels kinda flimsy but i have this one for a few years now.
    For PO, the square one from the left at 1:53, does the job, it was 15$, also a few years old (though not instant response = not great for espresso, but good enough for PO).
    The feeling of not caring if it gets broken, lost or whatever, is greater (*for me) than using an expensive much nicer product, but with the anxiety of braking it, losing or whatever.
    Also saying Acaia Lunar buyers ends up loving them is kinda dabatable (i'm sure some do), but at that exorbitant price comes ego investing, you won't hear many saying "that was expensive af, i don't know what i was thinking".

    • @DaddyGotCoffee
      @DaddyGotCoffee  17 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

      Yup, while WAY better priced than a lunar with comparable quality, this is still not a cheap scale. Exactly why I wanted to mention some of those other options. I used a weightman for a couple years. The screen barely worked by the end but def got my moneys worth

    • @Dis236
      @Dis236 17 วันที่ผ่านมา +3

      I used to use a cheaper scale (Searchpean Tiny) and was totally content with it.
      But then I started working as a barista in a cafe which had a dead Lunar.
      I asked if I could take it home and try to fix it and they let me.
      After changing batteries it worked perfectly.
      So basically I had a perfectly working lunar for around 30usd.
      So no ego investing from my part but the Lunar is better in every way than the Searchpean. And it'd better be, it costs like 10 times as much.
      But now I exclusively use the Lunar. The responsiveness is like comparing a 144hz monitor to a 60hz one. Sure 60hz is plenty but 144hz is much nicer.
      Is it worth the cost? I'd say no.
      I used the Searchpean for almost 2 years before getting the Lunar and it's still working fine, I use for travel and such so no durability issues.
      I'd say, get what you can afford and don't feel the FOMO but the Lunar is a REEAALLY nice scale.

    Thing is, paying more for the scale won't make the coffee better. So anything over 30 bucks should probably go towards the grinder, for example.

      Thing is: the bookoo scales are ment to fit in the flair leavers. That’s it. If you can find a scale that’ll fit there for 30 more power to you.

      This is true unless you already have a grinder. None of these accessories make significantly better coffee, but they are fun.

      mmmm if you keep drowning your scale, a waterproof one becomes more worth for example.
      the timemore black mirror basic 2 for example on sale costs 31usd. worth.

    Scales shouldn’t be that expensive. I don’t see the big difference or benefit compared to a 3bomber or Timemore. Besides the Bluetooth shouldn’t be a $200 up charge in 2024-25.

  • @cssmanheadshot
    @cssmanheadshot 17 วันที่ผ่านมา +1

    scale - $20
    food scale - $30
    COFFEE scale - $200 (they all do the same fuckin thing)
    Dont buy a coffee branded scale, just get a food scale with 0.1g accuracy, you will not get any additional functional benefit from a coffee scale. If youre just trying to flex your setup, or think the aesthetics are better, thats the only reason to spend 10x more on a scale.
