Oh man this might be the perfect companion to Beyond Bop’s “Three voice comping” pages. At least I think it’s what I need to internalize some of that playing. Thank you.
How come jazz drummer don't use wavy or broken vented bottom hi hat? Also, all the jazz drummers seem to go with wood, seems like old jazz players used metal snares.
Great info as always Ari!. Are you still doing lessons out of your home in Brooklyn? I took some from you quite a few years ago and it helped IMMENSELY!
Mr. Honig thanks so much for this lesson! I'm absolutely sure that timing and movements is the #1 topic from a drummer's standpoint. Please make as much lessons as possible on how to achieve a great sense of time cause it's so important to hear about it from you! Btw your book Systems is my favorite. One can learn just everything from it! But there is one question that I'm concerned about. In the begining of your Systems book you tell that every ostinato should be memorized and internalized before going to melodic material. Ride pattern seems to be basic ostinato so does it mean that I shouldn't start improvising before I get 100% stable ride pattern? oh and what model of vater sticks are you you using btw? i play this brand too

cool exercise it really makes you focus on your ride feel and consistency of the things you play on top of it
You make it look so easy
Hard not to feel that the skip/swing beat rhythm should be the core study for any young drummer with the given demo
Love your drumming! Thanks for the inspiration!
A lot to take in and keep together for any level if you really want to develop your time keeping...
