I wouldn't be surprised if Lisa leaves! YG still hasn't updated her album sales since february! Every month her album sales on Gaon chart is '0' while the other members solo album sales gets updated every month! They scammed her once, I wouldn't be surprise if they are doing her dirty again!

I know! 😔 I talked about that in my Lisa Deep Dive video. It makes no sense as to why her album sales aren’t being updated. I hope that gets fixed ASAP because it’s really not ok to do to her. :(

The idea of Lisa leaving is just crazy and it sounds very akgae. YG and their producer Teddy just gave her an unpredecent MTV award. You want song sale numbers for what, are you an YG share holder? Or you just want it to boast over the other members... which happens to be another akgae thing. The truth is she's not worried about it at all, it's just you. The pinks just want people to enjoy their songs.

Blackpink from 2016 - 2022 has less than 30 total songs. BTS has way over 200 songs in the same amount of years, from 2014 - 2020. That is wild 😧

That's actually really true, YG entertainment in my opinion cares more about A Girl Groups Image, Money and other stuff more than music, I mean look at the lyrics of most blackpink song they mostly talk about how they are Filty Rich and They are always the best (I'm not tryna send hate cuz I'm a blink too) I feel like YG doesn't actually care about the girls nor their talent but on other stuffs like yk how I mentioned on top of my comment. I hope that Blackpink just gets more fair treatment and if not then I feel like slowly the members might start leaving the group. Also I forgot to mention is that they only allow limited talent for our girls, like I believe that Jisoo, Rose, Lisa, Jennie they have a lot more in their talent by YG restricts it :(

i think what's sad is, as somebody who was there throughout 2NE1's last years as a group, seeing how YG failed them so miserably, every fuck up i see with blackpink i don't even get mad at, i just look at with resigned acceptance. YG is truly "if it ain't broke (or more accurately if you've conditioned fans so hard they'll buy into a group no matter what so even IF you're monetarily broke or morally bankrupt they can bail you out), don't fix it."
what scares me is what this reusing of formula, and what this marketing strategy might mean for blackpink and their legacy in the future. i have seen 2NE1 dragged through the mud from, at best, unfairly representing their music for bait in petty fanwars to outright erasing their legacy as if they weren't one of the top groups, not just girl groups, but groups of their time, period. they were known as digital monsters back in the day, no one in their right mind who's known kpop for this long would deny them their flowers, and yet, due to YG's own mishandling, it happens all the time. feels very similar to sm erasing the legacy of f(x), refusing to mention them at any turn. it scares me that, no matter how many records they break now, the same fate could befall blackpink. all that work from both the girls and the fans just for them to go out with their history leaving a bitter taste in everyone's mouths
whew. that was depressing. i don't like to doompost but i would be lying if i said i don't see signs of history repeating itself

Dammm…..You Blackjacks will never stop crying and blaming YG for 2ne1 s foolishness and stupidity that got them disbanded.
So you want people to believe that YG , having one of the most successful GG then , bringing in millions to his company , at the top of their game , suddenly decided to disband the group because…….he doesn’t like the money that much…….really …..any sensible person would know there is more to it than that. But you would or could never be truthful and give the facts, which is they did it to themselves. First Bom with her having drugs mailed to her , which although legally prescribed by a physician in the US , is illegal in SKorea and it was done behind YGs back. So her actions put the group and YG in jeopardy. Then while he’s trying to sort that mess out , Minzy decides that she can’t handle the fame and decides to quit, which only recently she revealed yrs later, knowing full well that her fandom, blackjacks were wrongly blaming YG. With the situation the way they were, one member in hiatus due to legal issues , and another one quitting …….there was only half the group to continue. So of course he couldn’t continue with half a group , and he formally did banded them , but he still didn’t throw them away , he gave the remaining two, Dara and CL , solo contracts which they both gladly accepted.
But this is the real injustice……while YG was left with no choice but to debut his long postponed GG ( BlackPink) , to somehow fill the hole that 2ne1 disbandment created , blackjacks , with 2ne1 encouragement, were raging an attack on BlackPink to sabotage their debut and rise.
So history shows how miserable they failed but every now and then , one or two lingering blackjacks would appear and attempt to continue their failed campaign.
Sorry you haven’t resolved this issue still …..but then you need professional help.
BlackPink “ the greatest GG in the World”by multiple sources
      Peace

Yeah, YG has an abysmal record for taking care of their artists. I’m glad the members of 2NE1 seem to have found their way to better, healthier situations now, but I’ll never not be bitter about how YG treated them. The long hiatuses and inconsistent treatment of the Blankpink members makes me worry for them.

This might be too long, but this is how I personally feel about black pink.
When I look at the girls and over the course of 6 years, I think that they are amazing at what they do, but I would hate to be training for 4-6 years and not utilizing my potential to grow as an artist. I understand quality over quantity, but how are you going to grow when you don’t practice and perfect your craft. I think that maybe they are happy, but they worked as trainees to do Music, release bodies of work, and to tell stories through the voices that they trained hard for. When I see they throughout 2 “FULL ALBUMS”, they have only released 16 songs in total, I get disappointed because I want to see growth. It’s great for YG because they are making money, but sucks for them because they aren’t growing. I think the album was nice and ok, but they definitely could have made it a masterpiece if they spent more time on it. Just my two cents, thank you.

100% agree with this. I love the songs in the album itself. I think it actually has the best songs in their discography but YG is still a huge issue here. 8 songs is not acceptable, especially ready for love being there. The difficult thing is that I don't know if its possible for them to get out of YG and stay as a group (I dont know the logistics and specifics of their contract). We know for a fact that the girls want more and they want to be more involved into song making process but I feel like YG has not given the confidence to do that on their own so that might feel more comfortable resigning and repeating this whole process. I really hope they try to negotiate and change up their next contract if they stay with YG. I have a strong feeling they will stay.

Thank you for this honest review. YG depends heavily on what I like to call scarcity marketing. Keep the fans hungry for more and condition them to be happy with less. Make the members seem exclusive (we all know they weren't allowed to do variety shows for a long time), give the fans criminally small albums, and release them sparsely to build hype and anticipation. It's not fair to the fans and it's especially not fair to the girls.

It was so heartbreaking. For months (since November 2021), blinks have been online BEGGING YG for an update on this album. Every person on youtube was very clear about wanting at least 10+ songs. The track list drops and everyone is suddenly "Okay, it's not what we wanted, but the important thing is that the album is even there" girl what???
And don't even get me started on Jisoo's treatment. They hide her in the choreography, give her no lines in the title track and then give her filler parts on the b-sides meanwhile we still have no update on her solo. Trying to communicate with this company is like talking to a brick wall. I don't want Jisoo to leave Blackpink since they are her family, but YG treats her like the least important member every comeback. If it's so infuriating to us (her fans), how painful must it be for her to always be everyone's last concern?
Thanks so much for this video!

RIGHT?? There was NO WAY YG had no idea people wanted more music. It's trended. People have made countless videos, comments. It's a known thing people want more Blackpink music and a true full-length album. To deliver 8 songs (which under different conditions would be fine but under these, it's not.)
I agree! Why is she always in the background of the choreography???? That girl can DANCE and she never gets to really show it off. If she wants to just do acting and doesn't WANT a solo -that's completely fine!! But maybe communicate that to fans??? hahaha

@@JonathanMillerMusic They definitely have an idea how mad the fans are. Straight from Teddy Park's mouth, "And I know the fans are mad. Like, "We want more and more." We do have a lot in here, but we're very particular with what we put out". It sounds like the "starve and release" approach works well with Blackpink so, even if the fans cry blood, they will just keep doing that. In fact, I think that they love it when the fans are getting mad and being demanding. It creates noise, creates publicity, creates instant promo but it costs them nothing.

Hi new sub here, I just got into Blackpink, and I must say this album felt underwhelming specially considering the time it came out, renaissance just came out and we’re finally returning to listening albums back to back and the release of an EP that’s disorganized (the track list order is all over the place) and gives a feel of a bunch of songs together instead of assembling them in a cohesive way pushes new listeners away. The fact that the album only had 8 songs and one of them I heard a sneak peek on a doc that came out two years ago made the whole thing feel lazy so I can only imagine how the fans that follow the girls since the debut must have felt. I personally think that if the girls were allowed to explore and have a saying in how the album was put together we could have had an amazing sophomore album just like ungodly hour from Chloe and Halle.

I have to politely but strongly disagree with you on this one. As you say yourself, the songs are all great and fresh for Blackpink. So your argument is: There are "not enough" songs on the album, they are in the "wrong order" and Jisoo doesn't has a solo or isn't allowed to shine? And your conclusion is, that YG mistreats the girls (even to the point of misogyny)? We shouldn't blame everything we don't like or understand as "YG mistreats Blackpink". Thats just as bad and entitled as a few years back, when fans complained "Jennie is lazy" (when in truth she had health problems). Of course you can like or not like Born Pink as an album. Different tastes, different opinions. Thats fine.
Personally I prefer shorter albums without any filler like Born Pink. We also know that the girls and Teddy are very particular about what they put out and that they work very hard on every single song. Of course as fans we always want more and more. But who is to say, the girls are unhappy with the length?
I also love the order of the songs. For me Born Pink thankfully takes you on a strong thematic journey and has a great message thanks to its specific order. I'm especially happy, that for once the "sad ballad" isn't the "obligatory" last song but an integral part of that journey. We get the emotional hit where it makes sense but we then overcome the sadness and end on a happier even optimistic note ("Ready For Love").
As for Jisoo: Her amazing falsetto is the biggest standout in "The Happiest Girl". In my perception, she overall gets more opportunities on Born Pink to shine than in past releases. Of course I would've loved to have a Jisoo Solo. But maybe it wasn't ready yet or Jisoo wasn't yet satisfied? And wouldn't it be more important what the girls want (or are happier and healthier with) than what we entitled fans demand? We fans always complain about heavily overworked idols, but when they take their time and release fewer songs or releases, we also complain?
Of course we always can discuss if they became the biggest girl group of the world because or despite YG's strategy. I see mostly overwhelmingly positive feedback for "Born Pink" and way less critsicsm than with "The Album" back in 2019, but that might be my filter bubble.
My biggest criticism against YG is the lack of communication, transparency and bad management of expectations to avoid "YG mistreats Blackpink" speculations like yours. I'm also wondering why we didn't get a "Blackpink Diaries 2022" so far. It would've helped to bridge the gap and bring the fans along this journey to this years releases and tour. We're not in the room when or why these descisions are made. So maybe there are good reasons for the lack of a new reality tv show, but please YG, then at least communicate with us fans on whats going on.

Thank you for putting this into words. YG has been coasting on a "minimum effort, maximum results" mindset ever since they realized the fans were willing and able to do most of the heavy lifting for them. Why put in actual effort promoting the group if fans are going to eat up whatever they put out regardless? Why give Blackpink consistent and multiple comebacks a year if a scarcity mindset (and fans' fear of disbandment) will make YG even more money instead? Once Blackpink had developed a solid enough fanbase and goodwill in their rookie years, YG stopped trying and fans had to pick up the slack.
I wasn't aware how bad this was with 2ne1 until the end of their careers with YG. But in the era of streaming culture, it's gotten much worse with Blackpink, and they deserve so much better than this. I'm not even a fan, but it's so insulting the way YG has stunted their growth. I hope they all leave YG and find thriving careers elsewhere.

I agree with you so much!! When I saw the tracklist I was like...this is a mini album or EP length...wtf. All this hype and promo for 8 songs (of which 3 were already out and one a SOLO). I just went to the Born Pink tour which was amazing and I'm so thankful I got to see the girls together live, but after seeing their solos live I couldn't help but think they may be happier and release more/better music once their contract is over. I feel like they all have so much going for them and I'd hope they'd still choose to collab with each other sometimes but either way, I'll support all of them in whatever they do. And regarding Jisoo I think at this point she's a bit hesitant and afraid to release a solo because of all the hype and pressure. She's even expressed she doesn't know what genre it would be. She's a perfectionist so I wouldn't be surprised if she's been delaying it as well. I just wish they had more creative freedom in general. Like I said though, I'm excited to see what comes next even if they end their contract and the concert was soo worth the money- they did amazing! YG gave them a platform and hype but now they need to step it up or let them have more control and a say in things
also in an ideal world, this is what I would think a perfect tracklist/song choice would be -
    Shut Down
    Pink Venom
    Typa Girl
You & Me (Jennie's new solo for whatever reason WASN't PUT ON THIS ALBUM)
    Hard to Love
    Happiest Girl
    (Jisoo Solo)
    Tally
Money - Lisa ( i feel would fit into this line up!)
    (New track that doesn't exist)
Yeah Yeah Yeah (this was one of the last songs they did at the show and. I think it's a great outro minus the fade out)
(ready for love doesn't fit imo)

It is frustrating when you're a fan of YG female artists, know what they are capable of...and see YG sitting on them and limiting them from showing the full range of artistic expression that you know is possible. Does anyone doubt that they could create some massively popular ballads with complex 4-part harmonies? I'm sure that they can. But I'm equally sure that going anywhere in that direction is not something that YG will likely ever let happen for them.
Lee Hi could have easily been an OST queen when she was at YG (and there were strong indications that offers and proposals were frequently made to YG, but most often rejected)...even during 3-year hiatus periods when she literally had nothing else going on. One time, she did an OST for a TV show. It was heard in the TV show and was wildly popular. People who wanted to listen to it had to do so by seeing uploaded videos of the clip from the TV show episode...because for some reason that was never explained, YG refused to release it as a song. (IIRC, it was the only song from the TV show OST that was not included in the OST soundtrack album. As usual, YG never bothered to even give an explanation. )
I always have mixed feelings about YG. It's thanks to YG, that we know who Jisoo, Jennie, Rosé and Lisa are. After they debuted, YG did several things right, including making shows like Blackpink House --- and that showcased the adorableness of the members that so many people have fallen in love with. But YG also limits them in ways that make no sense.

(And according to Ryan Tedder, it was supposed to have more tracks on it cause he co-wrote some of the tracks with Jennie and Rosé). I agree with you about the order of the tracklist feeling off, Like the album definitely could’ve flowed better. Also I agree with the sentiment that if there were more tracks on the album, people wouldn’t have felt minded Rosé having a solo. Like it’s a good song and she did well on the track, But since there are only 8 songs on the album I can get why people wouldn’t really go for it.

Never had any producer spoiled something before any release - NDA probably?
Plus if the song they produced is not in line with the Born Pink lineup why keep insisting to be included if it is not his decision to do so. From what I guess, links with Lady Gaga & Selena & Ariana through UMG (their Western label) hence they were included in The Album just like Lovesick Girls who had a touch of David Guetta.
They might have only included the tracks they like to perform infront of Blinks again after pandemic - some The Album songs have not yet been performed + Rosé & Lisa - what I mean is World Tour and not just for radio play or stream and sales.

Took the words right out of my mouth!! You covered basically every issue a lot of Blinks have with the company and the way the girls are treated. YG has left SOOOOOO much money on the table, and for what?!? Did they not learn from their own history? The company would have remained financially stable even after all the turmoil & scandals that have happened within the company the last few years. You briefly mentioned misogyny... I had hoped that having a female CEO in place would lead to better handling of BP, but it seems like the same old story. It seems like she is just a figurehead/puppet with the old regime maintaining the status quo behind the scenes. I really hope the girls play hardball with YG at the negotiating table. BP has done so much for the company, and I'm sure the girls are grateful to the company for the opportunity, but they deserve the chance to have more freedom & input in their own brand and music at this point in the game. I will support them regardless if they stay or decide to leave for another company, but at this rate I don't think BP will be able to reach their potential staying at YG..
I agree with your views on the album. Loved most of the tracks on the album, but I was left with a feeling of wanting more. A lot of the tracks are barely 3 minutes in length. 2 years of waiting and we get 8 tracks barely totaling 25 minutes in length? Though I suppose YG 'spoiled' us with 1 solo mini per year each containing 2 songs 😅 I'm not that upset with the English tracks. I thought this was actually a smart move since they are one of the only KPop groups with many proficient English speakers. Perfectly fusing Kpop with Western. I remember hearing Teddy talk once about how the lyrics for songs are sometimes composed in English and then translated into Korean, but due to rhythm flow or loss of meaning decided to keep it in English to maintain its intended impact. Just my thought when listening to 'Tally' since they drop some profanities in the song (maybe commonplace for Western, but too 'offensive' in Korean). Not hating on the girls. I love them and I think they sounded really good with a lot of the songs being bops but all the extraneous stuff with YG has left a sour taste in my mouth.

Hey Jason! Always good to hear from you. :) Thank you, I just don't understand what they're doing over there, even factoring in cultural and business differences. I mean Blackpink IS generating them tons of money but still. I was really hoping when Hwang Bo-Kyung took over that BP in particular would get some more attention and activity, like you said, but it's just so strange that they are still held in this weird limbo of mega-activity and then crickets -and not like the standard comeback/going away of activities in kpop. It's really a different thing with Blackpink that is so hard to put into words and describe to your average listener. It's so complicated! 😵‍💫
Oh absolutely. That's why I didn't bring up the English thing, like I just kind of accept that it's part of Blackpink now. Which is another reason I really hoped for more Korean traditional music on the record. It could've been soooooo cool! I know a lot of Kpop songs start as English demos so it's actually quite nice to hear them as they might have been originally intended... but like you said. YG's treatment just makes everything feel... icky. hahahaha

@@JonathanMillerMusic oooo that would have been a really nice change of pace to introduce more traditional Korean instruments into their music! I've seen Chinese hiphop/pop artists like Wang Leehom and Jay Chou do that to much success so it would have been very cool to see Blackpink do that to contrast the electronic sounds that is prevalent these days. I was really hoping Jisoo would get a bigger spotlight to shine this time as a preview to a possible future solo project. After hearing some of her lines in Ready for Love, her flawless visuals in Pink Venom, and even rapping (😳!!!) in Shut Down, I thought she would get to showcase her unique voice in the rest of the tracks. But as is the case, we are left wanting more although she has another writing credit under belt with 'Yeah yeah yeah.' Nothing against the others, but as the 'lead vocalist' she should have more opportunities than she was given. Just goes to drive your point about YG even more!

The company’s structure too doesn’t seem able to sustain the level of operation they are expected to work at. Word is that recently NayG has reorganized more like JYP, with task forces expected to work on/with specific artists to expedite the process. 9. a comfortable work environment. They're certainly not overworked musically, Jennie seems to be allowed to date, Jisoo is allowed to act (in a controversal movie) and they get the best collaborators.

I've been following Blackpink since before they even became Blackpink. My interest in YG generally was due to me being a fan of Lee Hi (from her Kpop Star days) since 2012. One of the first things that I noticed about YG was the very obvious and strange double standard in the way they handled female artists versus the way they handled and promoted the male artists. (Lee Hi of course had to endure a total of 6 years of hiatus (two back-to-back 3-year hiatuses) until she got fed up and left for AOMG as soon as her contract was up.
I noticed how huge, massive and expensive the pre-debut promotions for the new boy groups were, with literally a year's worth of weekly promotional reality TV programs being made for the boys (WIN, Mix & Match, Winner TV. Contrast that with the pre-debut promotions for Blackpink, i.e. the virtually non-existent pre-debut promotions. Sure Jisoo was allowed to appear in a few music videos of other YG acts, so people generally knew who she was before Blackpink debuted. Jennie was allowed to appear in a GD video, feature as a singer in a GD song and feature as a rapper in a Lee Hi song, so people knew who she was. Lisa and Rosé, for some weird reason, were intentionally kept nameless and faceless until the group debuted. ( Rosé featured as a singer in a GD song, but was literally only credited as a question mark (?). Lisa appeared as a back-up dancer in a Taeyang song, but was barely seen and not credited. ) Then just days before the official debut, YG showed photos of the girls and held the Blackpink Debut Showcase for the media/press to introduce the girls.
Despite close to zero pre-debut promotional investment, Blackpink has become YG's top group at present (and in terms of overall global impact, YG's most significant group ever). It's a mixed bag to be sure. YG spends and invests substantially in the music videos. But Blackpink-generated income makes that possible. But for the most part, YG is still treating Blackpink the same way as they were treating female artists 10 years ago. (Gummy and Lee Hi probably still have nightmares about the amount of time they spent in the YG dungeon, while YG was sending boy group members all over on TV shows, radio shows and so on.)

Honestly, it's time we stop blaming YG for everything. Like c'mon, let's be real for once, if not for YG do you think BP would be what they are today? BP is so fortunate that they do least to almost nothing and still be successful and keep the fame. You think this would be possible under other companies? Almost all the groups under the BIG 3 have fame and success only because they're under those companies (with exceptions). Talking about BP & YG, Honestly I don't feel like the girls are serious about making music either.....so let's not completely blame YG for that. Except for maybe Rosè, I don't think others are super into it. Other groups are made to slog like animals and are still not quite there as BP is today in terms of fame and popularity (unless you're from one of the BIG 3). Also, the girls pretty much like not being overworked and still be successful and popular I feel.
Here's the thing......since 2023 ends BP's contract. I will say this, if BP is really into making music and want creative freedom, they'll resign and join a company that allows creative freedom for artists (like maybe AOMG). But if they renew their contracts, it's 10000% evident that the girls enjoy this lifestyle. Because at the end of the day what matters is what you have in your bank accounts.

To be honest, a lot of these issues you raised have something to do with your expectations and assumptions about what you wanted a Blackpink album to be like, like the arrangement of songs, solo songs or subunit or not, the use of korean traditional music, etc. These are very specific individual preference types of things. Everyone has different expectations and there's no way any album can satisfy everyone's needs. This is what I've seen so far in terms of the general public reactions. People in the west who have never heard of kpop before are drawn to and impressed by Born Pink, especially the first 3 tracks. These tracks also do very well on global streaming platforms like Spotify. Born Pink has actually achieved so much for Blackpink and kpop as a whole just more than a week into its release. I'm not saying your main point that YG is mistreating the girls is invalid, because it is very valid, but what I'm saying is most listeners don't care about that. They care if they enjoy the music or not. And Born Pink seems to deliver, at least so far.

THIS. This is my biggest problem with BLACKPINK haters or criticizers. There is a big difference between not liking a song bc it's not your style and not liking a song because it doesn't perfectly match up with your own specific standards of what it should've sounded like. Like seriously, BLACKPINK are under so much pressure to always put out a song that meets everyone's niche standards and people are never happy. BLACKPINK have never put out a song that was so god awful it was unlistenable, yet people keep trying to act like that's all they put out. Why should BLACKPINK be held up to such a ridiculous standards that other groups aren't held up to? Just bc they're popular. They didn't ask the world to gas them, the world chose to. It's getting kind of annoying and it's so obvious when someone is only disappointed their expectations weren't met rather than just not liking a song

Wasn’t it said, and labeled, that Blackpink were creative directors on this album?
Does that come into play when making songs, designs, MV layouts and what goes in the album?
Or is this kind of just a not really useful role for Blackpink to have in this album?
A lot of fans say they’ve a lot of creative freedom, but then backtrack to say they’re “mistreated” and incredibly talented, just unknown.
It’s really confusing because, apparently, creative director is supposed to mean something big but it seems you’re saying what’s put out is not so much their choice.
How can one tell that Big Bang, Treasure and such have all this freedom and not Blackpink?
The concern being: what if Blackpink just aren’t capable of managing work given to them and aren’t able to produce, write or create works like this, only sing and perform.
That could be why YG is so strict, because they’re not quite capable of making their own work.
It’s YG’s company and his money that’s got to be taken out and he needs cash in return.
If the male groups can do better at making their own work that could be why they have so much freedom and opportunities for themselves.
There doesn’t seem to be that many women creating their own works in Kpop it seems.
This could be a result of them not wanting to take the role or being poor at it, no?

    • @HailToTheMeep

@@bretxavier9305 An argument could be made, easily, that for as long as women are not given the same opportunity as men, due a preconceived notion that they are less capable, that THEY WILL be less capable, due to lack of opportunities to DO and to learn. This happens, ALL THE TIME. Those who holds power decide what is true, and act based on this assumptions, fulfilling their own prophecy as a result. If you think women are bad drivers, you won't let them drive due to safety concerns, so they do not drive as often, and when they do, they won't be as good. No?

    • @bretxavier9305
      @bretxavier9305 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@HailToTheMeep That’s a philosophical way of looking at it, but doesn’t necessarily add anything to what was brought up.
YG most likely gave women freedom with capabilities to make choices themselves, but didn’t make the cut because they performed poorly.
It’s a slightly delusional idea to want idols to write, produce, create, design everything for their work because not many can do it.
These idols weren’t chosen for their ability to make music, but to perform.
When the Blackpink members put in lyrics it tends to be the very basic of words, poor English or basic word English despite wanting it to be in English industry, and extremely simplistic.
It showcases their lack of ability to write, not saying YG’s great, but they’ve a way to make it flow that Blackpink members don’t have.
In closing, no one would just give the members a sudden opportunity to write a song. They’d have to prove themselves, because it’s a company in the end not an art school.
These women are in their late 20’s and can’t sound like teenagers writing a sing for the first time. It needs to make money.
So there more then likely has been an opportunity for them to prove themselves and they hadn’t passed it,many times.
Why would YG want to pay for others to write their music when they can just have Blackpink write it instead? It’s a waste of money unless they can’t make it.
Blackpink ultimately signed the contract to be idols and if they didn’t read it, it’s on them. Their parents are far wealthy enough to assist in negotiating or getting out of a bad contract they willingly signed and most likely needed their parents signature on because they’re underage
It could just as very easily be argued that they like not making songs, a lot of songs or doing much of the creative work.
Considering they’ve had 6 years in their career, people have been pushing them to write and be more involved… it’d be a butt load more in money in it for YG if YG allows them to do this.
      Which’s begs the question:
Are they making works that are just barely capable of making it and don’t show enough capability to actually make a song without heavy assistance?
Or are they just not into it and would rather be performing?
If YG’s gonna rely on the girls to make their own music, they’ve gotta do it alone like a producer, otherwise YG’s paying the tab *still* for them to make “their own” music with assistance.
He can’t train everyone to be a producer, that’s bad for his business and any other record company out there.
You’re essentially creating someone who can take your money for training, become a great writer and dip to make money for someone else.
That’s why these companies check to give opportunities to their idols, ever so often, to challenge their ability to make music.
When you look at statistics, 97.7% of producers are men.
This isn’t saying women aren’t given the opportunity, but don’t find it appealing and would rather be performing, designing really anything but producing.
So why is it that Blackpink is this special group that is supposed to be amazing at writing, producing and creating their works and yet with all the opportunities YG throws at them, they have practically no songs originating with them and created by them?
It’s easily argued that misogyny doesn’t play a part, nor does favouritism or YG’s lack of producing producers.
You either want it or you don’t and that’s on the idol.
It’s a lot cheaper if YG has the idols making their own work as opposed to the company spending loads to get others music made for them.

Thank you for this video! Literally took what I was feeling about the album out of my mind and turned into a video. I really thought that YG might change after this hitaus and would at least give us ten songs. But nope, I let myself become a clown yet again. I had the same thoughts when regarding "The Happiest Girl". I have no idea why she had such a small part in that song when she's literally the Lead Vocalist and trained to be as such. Jennie's official positions are Main Rapper and Lead Vocalist, but she herself stated that she didn't train to be a vocalist and only did so after debut. No hate to Jennie of course, her voice is extremely powerful, but Jisoo's in the group for a reason. Her lower tone would have beautiful on that chorus. Plus, Jennie's the main rapper, so she should rap more often than not, but YG can't even do that I guess.
Also, another thing, why is there so much english on this album? This is their second KOREAN studio album, yet only four out of the eight songs are in korean. This was a compliant I had with The Album as well. I understand that Blackpink was created to promote in the western market, but they are a K-pop group from South Korea! International K-pop fans don't want english albums, we want k-pop albums. It really irked me that half the album was English, plus along with the english in the Korean songs themselves. What did you think about this?
And I agree with your sentiments on Rose's solo song track. It was beautiful and she sang her heart out. But why was on this album? It should've been apart of her solo comeback rather the group's. And you're right about it reflecting poorly on Rose as many people are already blaming her even thought she wasn't the one who chose the final tracklist. Also, I felt that alot of the songs were over before they began, you know? The songs, like "Typa Girl" and "Shut Down", just end after the second chorus with a small instrumental outro. It just feels really lazy to me.
I'm really concerned about what's going to happen when Blackpink's contracts expire and renewal negotiations start. I hope the girls are ready to enter the battlefield and take what they rightfully deserve from that company. However, knowing YG, I wouldn't hold my breath. I want them to continue, of course I do, but I dont't think it would beneficial for them in the long run as idols and artists.
Overall, I really liked video! And sorry for the long comment, but I had to get that off my chest.

The amount of English didn't bother me a whole lot because I kind of get that Blackpink is YG's in with the Western market but it would've been nice if more of them had Korean parts, I absolutely agree! I mean K-Pop artists have fully Japanese and Chinese language music so it's not a big problem for me personally but I definitely wish that a Korean language album had more Korean ON IT. hahaha

Just something to ponder, does quantity fares better than quality in long term? I wouldn't say so. I think this album is perfectly fine, 8 is easy to digest and memorized, yes there's song specifically only for marketing, some for general audience while some are very mature.i also feel it's kinda a bit strange to include rosie solo and refuse other song (eg Ryan tedder) while Jisoo hasn't even get a solo yet.but it still fine I love the new approach that includes mix of hip hop with synth pop to powerful ballad and then a guitar riff theme song. But my only desire is to see BP in an acoustic version of the album, or even artistical freedom session. Also I'm really2 anticipating Jisoo Solo or even collab, her voice is too unique to be ignored, and I'm tired of saying Jisoo needs a collab with someone like Utada Hikaru or Shiina Ringo from Japan coz her accent suit them better.

I thought an obvious display of lack of creative effort is the MV order for this promotion. It should have gone Ready To Love (an example of their old music that fans know has been around forever) to Shut Down (since they are literally shutting down their old eras... start the MV with then walking off the RTL "set" then same MV but end it with them opening the door to Pink Venom) then to Pink Venom (Pink Venom should have been last since it's the "new" Blackpink.. they should have entered the MV as the first new door on the next level). That's something so simple and it winds up giving the material more of a story and anticipation for the next release. They just keep choosing to do the bare minimum.

You should know YG by now! YG girlgroups are not trained to be self-producing group because they have TEDDY to produce the music. The Album was great! really stayed true to the title “Born Pink”. BlackPink isn’t BlackPink right now because of YG. Same with the Past girl group of the company 2NE1 are still Legend up to this day with their songs still charting to this day!
QUALITY over QUANTITY. I’ve been a fan of YG since 2009 and no one compares to YG girl groups till this day.

I must disagree with you. I think this is misogynistic. CL was a co-producer and songwriter for 2ne1 since debut and was never credited. Minzy was going to be a solo artist but YG put her in the group, she's even the only member who didn't do something solo during their time together. Jennie was also going to be a solo artist. They have not wanted to reveal Lisa's sales and it may be because she is a foreign member. Rosé had to spend all night preparing to create her album and it shows that she participated in the creation, because otherwise they would have given the flatter and more boring colors to her physical album. Like they did with Jennie. Who is probably going to sing only SOLO for the rest of her life. Don't let me start with Jisoo it's more than obvious that YG always put her aside. The photos for their albums have always been the flattest. Specially with kill this love they literally put red paper on the wall. LOL. I must admit that Born Pink's photos were great and they deserve nothing less. You don't have to be smart to realize that something is wrong.

Oh were they creative directors for this album?? I was unaware of that at the time of making this video and I really tried looking for their input but I guess I didn’t find the sources for that. That does affect my opinion and I appreciate you bringing that up. 🙏🏻 There are actually quite a few women in kpop producing and songwriting (Soyeon of G-Idle, Purple KISS is a self-composing group, etc.) so I think they want to. It’s just a different dynamic. :)

    • @bretxavier9305
      @bretxavier9305 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

@@JonathanMillerMusic Just curious how this changes your outlook on things? How this would change your view from what you stated in the video.
It does say on their album that Blackpink are labeled as “Creative Directors”
Not sure how important this role could be, considering some of the views towards YG and Blackpink are that they do not have much control over any of their content.
The belief held here is that Blackpink doesn’t have much input due to their lack of creativity, lack of ability to do so or lack of interest.
That last one is solely because the producing and creating in music is overwhelming male and this is because women aren’t as interested. Not to say women can’t or won’t chose the field, but women don’t hold much interest in making their content for entertainment as men do.
There’s plenty of fields dominated by men, plenty by women. This doesn’t mean the opposite can’t come in and work in it though.
It’s hard to believe YG is solely working against Blackpink because of misogyny or just sheer jealousy in their popularity.
Correct if wrong, but it’d cost him far less to have a group that can produce, create and style themselves, rather than constantly hire or utilize his own employees he’d had to overwork and overpay when they’ve other projects.
If Blackpink had the ability to do so they’d have been on it from the get. This isn’t to say they can’t earn the rights to do so through experience and get up their where the other producers are.
But Blackpink’s been present for maybe 3 years of their 6 year career. There’s so much experience missed in that time that could have easily given them the ability to be creative directors from the start… but if YG has to rely on others to make their content while using the same people to assist in their other groups for content, it could put a strain on things.hence the long wait times, plus “quality over quantity”
Being a creative director could just be a title, it could actually mean what it’s suppose to mean and they have control.
They’ve (Blackpink) mentioned how much control they’ve had before, so this is why it seems they really may just be uninterested, unqualified (for now/in the past) or unable to come up with something creative at the pace other artists have.
Not sure if you’ll respond, your takes are quite thought provoking and was hoping to post a comment to add to the discussion of whether or not Blackpink’s being kept in the dungeon by YG or they’re keeping themselves in the dungeon.
After all, half their time being in the game has been spent promoting brans, doing photos shoots, limited interviews, going to fashion show etc. really anything but producing music. They’ve so few songs, if YG wants money it’s hard to believe they’d keep their money maker away.
To be honest, to add this one bit, the kpop industry has been changing for some time now. It’s a brutal one, specially it being in Korea where work and studies are taken far more seriously than in the west.
They’ve taken from the west in many ways and thus drawn eyes from it to watch them which seems to have made them soften a lot of what they once did. Changing and adapting so it’s more acceptable.
YG’s treatment of 2NE1 was semi understandable with the scandal and the backlash of the public but also not. Not saying the scandal was justifiable, but with Koreas cultures it absolutely throws a wrench in things. People can change a lot, but Korea Hans a culture, much like the west and it has to be respected to a degree like any other. Changes only take time and can’t happen over night.
Like all these other companies, it’d be a stain on their record that keeps spreading if they only continued the mistreatment or accused misogyny going forward.
Specially with the internet and more people being involved, it takes only one person to make a video that shows what’s actually happening behind the scenes. Showing one’s true colours and exposing the real bad sad of YG.
That being said, things are always misconstrue in the media to make it seem far worse than it is.
That’s why it seems counterproductive for YG to continue his past actions that lead him to take money, hire people for some parties etc.
People change, so do companies and with YG holding auditions globally and putting himself out there, if the past was true and it continues people wouldn’t join or stay.
Blackpink have more than enough money to break their contracts and pay off the fee. That’s a,k they need to get out, is the cost of the obligatory fee to leave.
They’ve expressed their appreciation for him, where as other groups go against their company and speak out.
That seems like a slight sign that not all is as it seems.
But as you said, you’re familiar with the industry and it’s quite interesting to hear what your take is then change views to figure the most logical explanation as to what could really be happening.
Pardon the long post, TH-cam only allows typing, otherwise it’d be shorter lol

I agree on your opinion on how the sequencing of the 8 songs should be. It would be better for the Happiest Girl to be the last song on the list. Maybe YG dont want it to be like the one they did in "The Album" were their last song was also a ballad. Yeah yeah yeah is also, for me, like a 80's vibe song. Since they already did the 80's vibe like fading outro and other stuff....why didnt they make that song longer. Before during the 80's and 90's songs are more than 3:30 to 4:30 mins long. :) They even have as long as 6-9 mins long :)

Even their previous girl group had the same problem, a lot of people say that because they have a songwriter like Teddy, but Teddy has worked with GD as an co_composer for BigBang, and there's been no problem, in fact, it's caused Big Bang more power, why isn't the same system used for girl group's? Why don't they train girls to be real artists??

As in they already have the melody of the song and they just put any english words to fit in that melody that in the end its sound cringe. @@MeryKeit The only way to "own" a stage name is through trademark law. (Copyright laws do not apply.) But there are a lot of limitations and it would be difficult for YG to own their actual names. Even just the name "Lisa" for example probably cannot be controlled by YG through trademarking because there already have been a number of entertainers in music who use the name Lisa. YG registered the name Lalisa Manobal, primarily to be able to legally go after bootleggers and cheap merch makers who otherwise may try to make unofficial merch using her name. But I doubt that YG would or could prevent Lisa herself from using her own name commercially. The other members also have names that are not unusual and not easily owned and controlled by trademark, so I don't think they would have much problem taking their names with them. The group name "Blackpink" and their Blackpink discography would be a different matter and YG could probably play hardball with those things. But it would depend on how amicably they parted ways. YG hasn't done anything at all to prevent Lee Hi from using the same stage name that she used when she was at YG, transferred all of her youtube channel and contents to her and has never prevented her from performing her own songs.
