If you're going up there to check out the glow worms, I think winter is a better time. Even though it's cold, you have less time to wait for it to get dark enough to see them. You can still do it in summer, but the gates close at 730pm and you're waiting well over an hour for it to get properly dark. In winter the gates close at 530pm but it's getting dark by then anyway. Turn off your torches once you're on the path and let your eyes adjust for a while, and you'll see tons of little blue lights. They're everywhere: trees, overhangs, around the waterfall, by the stream, anywhere there's moisture. Leaving the park after the gates are shut is easy, they open automatically to traffic leaving the park. Take care on the drive out, the road to the gate is really narrow.
Next time you go, walk around the lake and park area, just beyond the actual falls, down a drive, which you didn't really show. Cafe there also. See all of the water birds. It's really pretty. Nice drive through.
It is really nice up there on a hot summer day, it may not be the most spectacular falls but it is more about how close to town it is, I used to fish up there, there definitely are fish, in the lake and the canals.

Nikau palm is a native NZ tree 🌴

Actually it's pronounced "knee-coh" but well done. 1 star pronounciation. Alternatively it is pronounced the exact same way as the name Nico.
