Spike's chip isn't magical artifact, it's programmed be scientist who knew nothing about magic. What they knew is the existence of vampires, people who raised from the dead. So for the piece of code, magic that ressurect people is nothing different from raising vampire. It seems to me, Spike's chip just classifies Buffy as vampire now. And that's totally normal program mistake.

I'm disappointed that I didn't think of that explanation myself. Although, to be fair, the show went with one that's a little more mystical. Of course, programming like that is still beyond the extent of what is really possible, so maybe the chip also needs to be a bit mystical.

    • @painlord2k
      @painlord2k ปีที่แล้ว +6

The problem is often one lead to the other and at some point it becomes difficult to distinguish cause and effect.
A violence able but not prone individual can be an asset in a relationship. Buffy already used Spike to protect her family a few time. So, she is seeing him as an asset and a protector even if he is a pain in the ass and dangerous.

    • @shadout

As Shakespeare said, "these violent delights have violent ends" But in Buffy and Spike's case, it all started from violence.

  • @primrosett
    @primrosett ปีที่แล้ว +52

th-cam.com/video/qf5AqpcF36M/w-d-xo.html This part right here I think is pretty crucial to understanding Spike's behavior this episode. Being soulless, his ability to feel guilt or empathy is severely stunted and he is naturally drawn to selfishness and violence. Up until this episode, he found external reasons to be "good" in the form of Buffy--her acceptance and happiness. Think back to last season, when he was so touched by Buffy's forgiveness and the way she saw humanity in him; "I know I'm a monster, I know you'll never love me, but you treat me like a man."
Here, he's begging her to acknowledge his humanity again, and she rebukes him. She instead tells him he's a thing, he'd intrinsically evil and that nothing he can do or say will ever change that. That's not to say that she's responsible for his decisions, she isn't, but I see where his mind is at. It doesn't matter what he does and he can't feel the guilt of wrongdoing, so why bother? Why try so hard for a world that is so apathetic to your efforts?
The episode's theme is characters cutting loose and giving in to their darkest, most hedonistic urges. Spike is no different than Willow or Buffy; he too is letting go of his restraint. He too is tired of trying, just like Buffy is.

I was going to say the same things you lay out here. ^_^ Further to Buffy's change in how she treats him, she is trying to bluntly protect herself from her attraction to him. She is using all her energy simply to keep going, she has no resources to try to unravel all the issues, so she retreats into a very simplistic worldview: Slayer good, vampire bad. And since Spike takes his cues from her, he figures fine - I'll be bad then... (Any further thoughts would be spoilery *g*)

It's definitely one of those shows where everyone watching who's a shipper understands its toxic. At the core of it there is taboo. Their very natures of Slayer vs vampire makes them enemies. And these are non-modifiable things about them. But at the same time they have that energy, connection, friendship, antagonism mix where you want to see them together! Yet still, their connection is growing as this small precious thing. growing where most genuine affection would died under the strain of the relationship. And they're both strong (body and personality) , so they could handle that level of toxic poison in a way that allows this relationship. This is one of the realest things about Buffy. This helps people define where Buffy is in her head, because spike is not just a guy. He is a tool of telling Buffy's story. He's an insight that enriches the story.

I vividly remember having the same reaction as you to that last scene. How can they be showing this??? This was on a commercial broadcast network, not pay-cable. No nakedness, but EXACTLY what was going on was unmistakable (yes, that is the sound of a zipper being unzipped) and their ... ummm ... motions .... 😲I was so amazed that they were showing it that I didn't immediately react to what a huge story moment it was. As another comments says, the whole relationship between Spike and Buffy should be one of mortal enemies, one destined to kill the other. So their whole relationship is based on violence, but somehow it's grown and evolved outside of that, which is why it feels strange (but damn sexy).
The episode also reminds me of 2 quotes:
The last lines Buffy sings in Once More With Feeling:
"This isn't real, I just want to feel..."
Her relationship with Angel was romantic and tender, whereas this is very much not that!
; and season 3 ep8's speech Spike gives Angel and Buffy:
You're not friends. You'll never be friends. You'll be in love 'til it kills you both. You'll fight, and you'll shag, and you'll hate each other until it makes you quiver, but you'll never be friends. Love isn't brains, children, it's blood - blood screaming inside you to work its will. I may be love's bitch, but at least I'm man enough to admit it.
I like how, even though the characters have evolved, their basic beliefs are the same.

Oz doesn't come out as the bad guy who's trying to win the lady back,Willow does lie and hurt him,but out of understandable fear and confusion, not because she _actually_ intends to harm him,Tara does not try to split them up,they are *all* wonderful in their own way and they even open that possibility in a very distant future for Willow&Oz to reconnect so in the end instead of feeling bad for any of them you feel happy for Tara&Willow and relieved that at least Oz&Willow had a proper closure.💞

The sex scene between Buffy and Spike was actually toned down, if you can believe it. They added the dust at the very end and made it a tighter shot when Buffy's on top of Spike. Originally, it was a longer shot but they thought their "movements" were too explicit. So we get a tight, dusty shot of them and a quick fade to black. When I heard the zipper, I was like, "Wow. She literally pushed him so far to the point nothing of what he did could be enough for her to treat him like a person. What I appreciated is that in season 7 he called her out on this when he told her how much his perception of violence changed after loving her and telling her that she used him.

It's interesting to see how Buffy and Xander are the most willing to give Willow a pass, probably because they're going through their own forms of denial about themselves. Makes sense if you think about it.
I think there's nothing really "accurate" about the chip - it's scientific... it probably registered her as "still dead," or maybe something about her resurrection didn't trigger its "sensor" as a birth. You're definitely right in that she's just as human as before. I think the purpose for the story is it gives Spike a weapon against Buffy (in more ways than one) that allows him to hurt her, and it exacerbates her sense of not being part of the world.

Not that I’m condoning Spike’s behaviour towards Buffy in this episode. I’m definitely not. What he is doing and saying to her is abuse. But I can see it from his perspective also. Buffy one moment is calling him an evil disgusting thing, and then the next she asks for his help and trusts him to protect her family. Spike’s receiving mixed signals from Buffy all the time that he doesn’t know which way to go with her, how to behave towards her. He doesn’t know whether to be supportive and constructive or abusive and destructive. Being a soulless vampire and all - he can’t truly differentiate between what’s right and what’s wrong. However, his actions and choices are entirely his responsibility and he shouldn’t be absolved from punishment just because of it. He should take accountability for the relationship between them just as much as she should. Of course - then there’s Buffy - who doesn’t even know what kind of relationship they have other than the one they’re supposed to have. That is most natural to have. And in that sense, the abuse between them in this episode is actually entirely appropriate. The sex - not so much. But it has to be acknowledged that Buffy initiated it. She’s the one that chose to kiss him, unzip his fly and go to town. Her feelings for him are so confused.

They were both in a abusive relationship. And it's more common than we think ^^ Buffy treat him like a shit so many time and he tried sooo hard to look good for her... So i was not crying for Buffy like "oh you re being manipulate by a guy, poor girl, runaway". This relation was necessary for Buffy, a lot. Sometimes lifes teach us things in disturbing way. Spike got Buffy but at the end it was not enough : he will be never an human, or someone you can trust like Angel. The rape scene is important because it s the moment when spike realize he TRULY is a monster. Buffy slept with Spike because nothing matter anymore : she does not find joy in family, friend or job. But at the end she will realize she hurt Dawn a lot. This season was sooo great. And it was hard to go atfer the nearly perfect season 5 ^^ The idea to "destroy" buffy s metaphore, slowly, by showing more realitu (addiction probleme, rape, abusing, manipulating etc...) was so interesting after a season with pure epicness ^^

Posting my BUFFY REWATCH recap for ‘Smashed’. May contain spoilers.
‘Smashed’ is an interesting episode. I refer to it as part 1 of the catalyst of the themes of addiction and depression going on in Season 6 with Buffy and Willow. Part 2 being ‘Wrecked’. This episode introduces several destructive relationships. One such destructive relationship has already been well established so far in Season 6: Willow and magic. A human-to-human destructive relationship introduced, however, is through magic… in the sudden emergence of a recurring character that has been left by the wayside until now. Amy Madison. But while Willow and Amy’s relationship does have an equal amount of screen-time, I would say it’s Buffy and Spike’s relationship that takes center-stage in this episode. Thus, it is Buffy and Spike that I will be talking about for this recap as I want to discuss the whole comparison between soul-having and chip-having and what that means for Buffy and Spike’s relationship.
Half-way through this episode it is revealed that Spike can now hurt Buffy again and therefore fight back when she physically strikes him. The sudden assumption by Spike is that his chip is faulty and that that must mean that he can hurt all humans again. However, when he tries his theory out on an innocent female victim and it is confirmed to be incorrect by Warren that something is wrong with it, Spike realizes it’s not the chip that’s faulty. It’s Buffy. Somehow Buffy’s resurrection from the grave has changed the functionality of Spike’s chip. It no longer works on her and that means Spike’s relationship with Buffy - which has been loving and healthy so far in Season 6 - has turned abusive and destructive because… of course…Spike would want to hurt her again and resume the violent “dance” that’s been happening between them since before Spike’s chip was implanted in Season 4. This revelation culminates in them having violent sex - which Buffy initiates. Their desire and passion for one another literally destroys an entire building. A way of showing that their sexual intimacy is so intense and powerful that it can actually bring a house down. While this is the relationship development Spuffy Shippers wanted, it’s is not quite what they asked for.
So let’s analyze this turn of events shall we? The way I interpret this final scene is like this: We know from ‘Fool For Love’ that Spike conflates sex and violence. So I personally believe the creators - Whedon specifically - are basically giving the Spuffy fans the finger and saying “be careful what you wish for”. Essentially making the argument that a soulless vampire and a vampire slayer cannot physically be together without hurting each other. The only reason Spike and Buffy weren’t hurting each other beforehand was because Spike was chastised by his chip and so it was unfair for Buffy to fight him when he couldn’t fight back without hurting himself. So Spuffy fans get the sex but it comes at a price. It comes at the price of violence between them.
To me, there’s this glaringly obvious comparison happening here between Spike not having a soul and not having a working chip. Since the beginning of Spike’s appearance on the show, characters make funny comments every now and again of Spike being an actual dog (I mean just look at his name) - and when the chip comes into play in Season 4, he becomes a domesticated dog that is housetraining.
See Spike’s dialogue in ‘Pangs’: “I’m saying that Spike had a little trip to the vet and now he doesn’t chase the other puppies anymore. I can’t bite anything. I can’t even hit people.”
So in metaphor - the chip is a shock device on the dog’s collar to stop it from acting out. Or… as per Willow’s line of dialogue moments before Spike says his line quoted above: “He had trouble performing”. In metaphor: it is castration or erectile dysfunction.
So that’s what not having a working chip covers. Now not having a soul. Later on in Season 6 in the episode ‘Seeing Red’, Buffy and Spike’s secret sexual affair becomes violent sexually and Spike attempts to rape Buffy after she makes the decision that she will no longer sleep with him. I have said several times now that I was not okay with seeing this scene. I hate it so much because I know that while Spike’s nature as a soulless vampire is inherently violent - his character, even soulless, would never stoop as low as rape due to his own experiences with sexual abuse. And that scene puts me off in many ways because I know with every fiber of my being that it is character assassination. Spike would not knowingly rape Buffy. Once again - the writers are telling us that a soulless vampire has no morals - no sense of morality at all.
Well, that may be true with other soulless vampires…
But it isn’t with Spike. Yes, Spike is selfish. Yes, Spike is violent. Yes, Spike is abusive. Spike is all of these negative and immoral things. I can agree with that. But at the same time - Spike CHOOSES who he is at every moment. The fact he doesn’t have a soul has nothing to do with what he does or how he acts. It doesn’t because he can do good things by choice too. Being “evil” or “good” is a choice. It’s not inherent. Sometimes Spike defies his nature, other times he follows it…. But it is always HIS CHOICE what he does. Not having a soul has no bearing on his actions and therefore his actions in ‘Seeing Red’ are assassination of his character and not a development of it. So I flat out disagree with Joss Whedon that the character had to have a soul to be a good person.
But despite all that, it definitely does make for an interesting character arc that Spike needs a chip to not hit or bite humans. It makes sense to me because it is in his nature to be violent - to commit acts of violence - not because he is soulless… But because he is a vampire. I don’t think the writers make a very strong case for these two things being one in the same in Season 6 after the beauty that is his character starting off in it. After they make it apparent that CHOICE is the factor that makes him either beautiful or ugly, not his nature. Voluntary do-goodness starts off performative so that he can survive. But eventually it becomes genuine trust and faith and… love. It’s true, Spike can be violent but he can also be very loving too. To me, this definitely makes him more man than monster no matter what Joss decides to paint him as half-way through Season 6 without any rhyme or reason… with nothing but spite for the shippers.
So as for the relationship between Spike and Buffy turning romantic/sexual - I think it makes a lot of sense that eventually their passions would overcome their sensibilities as they are essentially the same supernatural entity/spirit. That is to say - they are the shadow and light of each other. So it makes total sense to me that when they fight about who is more fucked up than who when it comes to this in the final scene, they end up fucking each other. In Season 6, it could be argued that they’re both a little soulless, a little chipped… a little less human than before. Their relationship is one born from violence so it only makes sense that they would revert back to it when they realize that they can carry on their violent “dance”. Now literally and obviously portrayed as sex. And I’m not saying I ship it because it is toxic - but dear god is it riveting to watch them smash that house to ruin.

"And that scene puts me off in many ways because I know with every fiber of my being that it is character assassination. Spike would not knowingly rape Buffy" you are wrong... And the show was great to show it...
Basically when a vampire beat a victim it's a metaphore for rape. We saw Angelus and Spike talk about it, int the past too (later in the show...) Without a soul Spike has to obey to his "instinct". Turn his face as a vampire and showing him tryng to bite buffy : you will see the scenes would have been the same. Season 6 is great because they "turn off" the metaphore buld by buffy and we see what is behing the actions : Hypnotise girls ? It 's rape and slavery. Beating a girl ? It 's a rape...

I think the reason Season 6 was so much raunchier than previous seasons had a lot to do with the network change. Originally it aired on the WB network, but in season 6, Buffy was picked up by the UPN network, which had a reputation for being less conservative when it came to sexuality. You had Xena Warrior Princess running around doing high kicks in a leather miniskirt, and The Beastmaster running around in a loincloth. I remember they even aired a show called Cleopatra 2525 about a stripper who gets cryogenically frozen and wakes up in a dystopian future. I think the new network gave the Buffy writers a lot more leeway in how far they were allowed to push the envelope.

What's funny is that James Marsters actually accidentally bit Sarah during that last scene. That was his first actual sex scene that he was doing, so he got a bit carried away and just accidentally bit her. Then he immediately began to worry that he would be fired for 'unprofessionalism', lol. But that's okay, James, things happen 😄
Regarding Spike's character in this season. During their fight when he says 'Hello! Vampire! I'm supposed to be treading on the dark side' - I just practically see how writers are trying to speak with the audience here. Trying to convince themselves and people that if he is a vampire he should be bad, evil monster. No other way. How can you like him, he is BAD. But the problem is that it's kind of too late already, guys. You already spent lot of time portraying him to be more than just some vampire monster. Even this season, just couple of eps earlier, look at him, what he was doing, how he was communicating with Buffy, her friends, Dawn. So sorry, but you can't just say now "oh, forget all this, let's make him degrade to some typical monster because Joss Wedon thinks that vamps characters should be bad'. You can't play me like that and that easy.
And don't make me come up with theories for you (the writers) and convince others to believe that he should be like that and there is no other way. Sorry but no 😎
Side note. I watched couple of reactions to that ep and I noticed that when guys were watching it somehow most of them predicted that sex is going to happen here. But for girls that was a surprise. Including me when I was watching too.

Even though Amy is back, we can see she is a bad influence on Willow, as she is a powerful witch also, the two of them at having great fun at The Bronze, but at the expense of everyone else, we can see again the magic addiction out of control. Spike knows something has changed in Buffy, and proves it by hitting her with no neural pain for him. It always looked as if it was only a matter of time when Buffy succumbed to her sexual urges and desires, and they two of them with superhuman powers shag so hard they demolish the house! The seeds are now really being sown for the tone of this Season as 'Pandora's Box' is now well and truly opened. The reason the sex scenes were shown now is because of the network change. On the WB it was not allowed, but once they switched to UPN it was ok. James Marsters explained this in an interview at Dublin Comicon in 2019.

Buffy does feel love for Spike, but she feels like it is wrong.
Spike does feel love for Buffy but he also feels like it is disgusting.
Buffy coldly rejects him verbally twisting the knife into the vulnerabilities he shared with her.
Spike is hurt by these words and coldness, retaliates how a vampire would by striking back with his own words.
Buffy feels conflicted because she doesn't mean those words but is disgusted with herself for falling in love with a soulless vampire, feeling like she truly betrayed Angel. Riley was truly nothing to her but a fall guy.
Spike strikes back at Buffy and uses mental isolation manipulation on Buffy, like he learned from Angel with Dru.
Buffy, in denial, calls Spike an it, a monster and disgusting. While also entrusting him with Dawn, getting information, and truly depending on him.
Spike obviously sees through Buffy's denial to the truth as his perception is through the roof and knows he's being played with and manipulated himself. He doesn't mind that because that's what vampires do to other vampires.
Buffy is intentionally attacking Spike's William side that Spike is beneath her.
Spike starts believing that he is a monster, but then remembers he is in-fact a vampire.
Buffy continues to suffer her own isolation due to being in heaven and her friends STILL don't understand her. So Buffy keeps returning to Spike
Spike acts out by proving in the only way vampires think they have to prove they are equal by striking out.
Buffy is hit and yet STILL goes back to him while knowing that fighting is basically second base for vampires.
Spike wonders if it is him that is broken. He's not so vampire logic states it is Buffy's problem not Spike's.
Buffy finds out and is shook by this and then hatefucks Spike.

Welcome to the overt expressions of the season of increasingly bad decisions that come from Depression - nothing is how you wanted it to be and everything you do makes things worse. I loved the sexual tension between Buffy and Spike and wanted them together, but not like that.
My Headcannon and not stated anywhere as reality - when Professor Walsh was trying to get rid of Buffy back in season 4, she rewrote the program for all the chips the Initiative had put in to read Buffy as not human so that the monsters could attack her without any pain. Warren said the chip is still pulsing, which means it's still running the programming she made. It wouldn't have made any difference with other monsters because it's Buffy's job to fight them and she had no idea which creatures had chips; however, Spike hasn't tried to hit Buffy since then because he was in love with her. So Buffy didn't come back wrong, Spike's chip was rewritten instead.

As far as ":How did they get away with this" issue, IMO., this was when America had the guts to show a "sexual" situation as long as the actors were not naked or exposed to much. People understand that it was not REAL and it was a TV show. IMO, that is how they did it. Plus, they had switched networks and the were pressing the limits. But, they didn't press on the limits to hard. They never took to show off the air. IMO, this is a PERFECT EXAMPLE of America being degraded as time goes on. They're to busy making Baby ass Panseies happy and the are forgetting America. Again, IMO.

Who thinks that Sofie needs to watch/react to Friends?

I'd prefer her to watch Lost or 24.
I had friends obsessed with Friends. Never was my thing for some reason. They used to force me to watch it, but would they watch Buffy/Angel? No!
Maybe this is a convo for my therapist and not TH-cam?

I respect your opinion on Friends. But that's just you, right? it's not just because you don't like it that other people can't suggest or try the chance to watch it and give their opinion for themselves. I don't have any interest on watch Lost, but that's just me.

      @@honeychild4 Are you serious? Lol.
You gathered that I want to discount people's opinions because of my comment? Did I not state, "I prefer...." which implies that it is only my opinion, and I'm not making a statement unilaterally for the entire human race.
Love, I was just answering a question that you asked. I answered and gave alternatives of what I'd prefer.
I'm sorry if you feel I disrespected you in anyway.

I just answered your question too and not for a moment meant to offend you. I just said that I (I) would like her to react to Friends since she's never seen it. And I replied your comment saying that I understand your opinion, but as I said, it would be interesting for her to watch the first episodes of Friends and draw her conclusions. Just that

Episodes 19~22, you'll find out just how much Willow is holding back.
