Huh. Bowser and Mario are both fire users, but their animations reflected their alignment. Mario had the sun burning behind him like a heroic chosen one, and Bowser straight-up turned into the Balrog of Morgoth. Good guy fire and bad guy fire.
I always liked how they both use fire as a main. Gives a fun "two-sided coin" feel to the rivalry.
That's the most poetic and epic way to see them

Actually, that's not too far off. The in-universe explanation for why the characters are wearing specialized armor in this game is so they can kick the ball without shattering every bone in their bodies. XD

Battle League is just so lazy compared to this masterpiece, that only has thick outlines and fire in the eyes, in Mario Strikers Charged however, every single character got a Final Boss Ultimate Move style animations, it's 100 times cooler and more badass

Lately a lot of video game companies have found success with maturer designs. Not sure why Nintendo, especially the Mario franchise, has retrograded. I assume it’s a marketing thing. They decided to delegate Zelda to mature audiences and Mario to younger ones.
