They did went up against each other before, Because Here I know the story that I was told, Seabiscuit and Big Mate, had a baby girl, My uncle heard about this Horse "Seabiscuit" so he went to his place and their was a month old horse and he name her Rosey, he had her about 24 years so I took her and she made it through 39 year old, that is old for a horse, I have pictures of her, and how many colts, she ended up having 13 babies colts

Yeah there's only one problem, it's a fuckin LIE!!!!!! Seabiscuit was never that far off the pace in his last race which was the 1940 Santa Anita Handicap. I have no idea why Hollywood wrote this scene in the movie cause it literally never happened, imagine how ridiculous it would be for a top jockey to pull his horse up to motivate another horse being ridden on by an old friend. It's fuckin bullshit. Not to mention the fact that Seabiscuit was always right off the pace in that race. This scene did nothing but make it look like a great horse like Seabiscuit couldn't win this race on his own cause apparently he needs a sucker in the race to linger at the back of the pack so he can look the loser dead in the eye and find his best stride to finish the race lol who the hell writes this stupid shit cause again NONE OF THIS ever happened

Seabiscuit and Red are my idols and always will be. I raced horses for two years but then got to tall. I was so greatfull to see where Seabiscuit lived out his last days. It was amazing just like him. Horses (nowadays) may be faster than Seabiscuit and taller and better but Seabiscuit will always be the best. Even though he was much shorter than the others he didn't let that take him down. He proved that size does not prove a horses power. Power proves the horses size....

Yeah I'll agree size doesn't matter, take for instance War Admiral, who was no bigger than Seabiscuit, won the triple crown as one of Man O Wars smallest offspring. Maybe you can explain to me why Hollywood took their rivalry and turned it into some kind of David and Goliath bullshit. Everyone who watches Seabiscuit the movie honestly believes everything they saw in that movie was true, like his last race in the Santa Anita Handicap, none of this shit happened, he was never that far off the pace in that race and he certainly didn't need another jockey to downright throw the race so that he could be motivated to find his best stride and win the race, its bullshit just like how they portrayed War Admiral as a horse who stood 17 hands, HAHAHAHA that's like me doing a film on Shaq and hiring a 6 foot guy to play him, what a joke he barely stood at 15 hands, im so tired of people believing lies that can so easily be proven false with a simple google search

The NY Times had an article about California Chrome and why it wore a "breathing strip." While walking, a horse consumes one liter (about 0.25 gallon) of oxygen a minute.
At a racing gallop, a horse’s oxygen consumption can approach 60 liters (nearly 15 gallons) PER MINUTE! This means that horses breathe anywhere from 100 to 135 breaths per minute at extremely high gas flow rates!
That is an incredible amount of O2 consumption and a respiratory rate of 135.
      WOW!

The run he makes in this scene reminds me of Zenyatta. Yeah, I've read stories about Phar Lap. He only raced in the U.S. once, right? I think it was Tijuana before Santa Anita opened because California didn't have legalized gambling - as far as horse racing - at the time. 1930?

All the amazing horses we knew in the past:
Seabiscuit, Secretariat, Ruffian, War Admiral, Dream Alliance, Cass Ole, Native Dancer and many others show so much feeling on how to never to give up, especially when racing.
I believe that this is why horses are probably the most beautiful animals that God created to live on this world.

I am so very fond of Seabiscuit as I had a life very similar to his, the abuse, the competitive rage, the speed, the seething temper and so much more. The average horses heart weighs 8-9 lbs. Biscuits heart was 14 lbs and Secretariat' heart weighed in near 22 lbs. These monster sized hearts are passed down by the Mare and is known as the X factor. So, the biscuits heart was nearly twice the size of an average horse and Sec's heart was nearly 3 times the size. In a long distance run, Secretariat would obviously beat anything on 4 legs as he could pump more oxygen into every muscle of his body than any other thoroughbread that existed. This is why his record at the Belmont of 2:24 still stands and will never be broken. Now as for speed, Seabiscuit was built to be a sprinter. He once fell behind in a race as he stumbled at the gate and was so angry that he actually ran a quarter mile to catch up faster than the quarter horses of his time and the speed he ran it could not be broken by any quarter or distance race horse even to this day. When Biscuit got angry he was astounding. Both Biscuit and Sec..had huge hearts. Sec's was monstrous and may never be seen again. So, in a long distance race, Sec would win, but coming down the stretch in a shorter distance competition, biscuit would fly past him as he was built to be a sprinter. George Wolf said that that Seabiscuit was built like a tank, the most muscular horse he ever rode. I hope this helps. By the way, both of these legends were super intelligent horses and those closest to both of these great animals said that if they were human they would have ego's the size of a mountain. On Seabiscuit's statue George Howard had inscribed on the plaque that Seabisbuit's intelligence bordered on the Spritual. I have seen pictures where Seabiscuit is staring at a camera man and it gives me chills as the awareness in his eyes is more accute than most humans.

Seabiscuit ran in all kinds of races at various distances under varying track conditions at a variety of race tracks. I think he ran for as little as a $1500 claiming price at Suffolk Downs in Boston. He was a real "journeyman" horse. He was a true rags to riches story.
He had as much nerve, stamina and determination as any horse who ever ran. Red Pollard met his wife as a nurse in a suburban Boston hospital while he was on the mend. He ran in handicap races when they were truly handicaps and they were expected to carry weights that would "stop a freight train".

My favorite part of her book, aside from her discripition of his races, is when she talks about the personality of Seabiscuit...They began to think that Seabiscuit was just as obstreporous as his sire only much more cunning in his methods. Where Hard Tack had raged, Seabiscuit seemed....amused. (not an exact quote but you get the idea). I laugh so hard every time I read about that. I love it!

I just watched this movie again today and was shocked when I started bawling at the scene where Red as a kid was watching the horse racing and was SO passionate and in love with the animal and the sport that he was "riding" the race as he stood on the sidelines. I had to give up riding a few years ago and have tried very hard to subside that very passion, but man did it come out in a waterfall of tears when I saw that scene, it surprised me! And then this scene, seeing the goodness of people throughout the movie; George and how wonderful a person he was (I wish there were more like him!), Howard's fatherly relationship to Red and how it healed them both, and Tom's wonderful outlook. And best of all, the relationship between Biscuit and Red is one every rider dreams of and non horse people really miss out on. I've had it once before, and there is literally nothing better in the world. What a beautiful, beautiful movie.

This scene right here is why Seabiscuit will forever be the greatest race horse of all time. I dont care what the record books say, Man O' War or Secretariat never had a heart the size that this little race horse had. He never gave up, he never quit when the whole world doubted him. He kept going, he kept fighting the good fight, racing the good race. He over came all the odds and proved everyone wrong. He may be gone but he will never be forgotten. His presence will always be on the track....

Jason Downs Very true Jason! One couldn't imagine a more beautiful backdrop as the San Gabriel mountains! Santa Anita is my favourite race track in the US. A good many Hollywood celebrities (in the 1940's and 1950's - and beyond) were fully taken by the astounding beauty - and the lure of huge profits (via horse-ownership) at this Los Angeles area track. (And don't we all love this sport?!) I so enjoyed Mickey Rooney's famous comment (in which he recalled in his later years) that in 1940 (at Santa Anita) he lost a $2.00 racing bet - and "spent $500,000 - over the following decades - trying to win it back." Yes, this also happens in this sport of Kings. P.S. The Hastings track in Vancouver, Canada (with her own gorgeous backdrop - The North Shore mountains) is quite stunning too! Come see it if you haven't already. Cheers and thanks!

I remember the first time I saw this wonderful movie was on a flight to the US. We were slightly ahead of schedule and they turned off the films literally as Marcela jumps up onto the car to look at the race. Leaving me hanging. On the return flight either it was no longer available or the films were fully broken. I didn't want to just see the ending, disconnected, so it must have been another year or so before I finally saw the conclusion. I know it's soppy (and not historically accurate) that George drops back to give Biscuit that head-to-head moment which gets his blood pumping - but it's superb cinema. And it feels authentic to the heart of the story.
