Eye Dominance is the tendency of the brain to prefer visual input of one eye over the other. You may immediately think that this is a simple topic and you already know your dominant eye, but there's a whole lot more to it than that. Shooting flying targets or birds with a shotgun is all about hand-eye coordination. Shooting well will be a challenge if you don't understand the eyes.

Right handed, but strong left eye dominant. I always say I shoot guns, bows, and pool left handed. Most don’t realize how much it can effect playing pool!

I am left eye dominant and used to use tape over my right eye. Got an adjustable comb and set it up. It is like night and day now. My scores on skeet and 5 Stand improved right away.
Thank you for the video! My mom is Left eye dominant and right handed. She used to think she was just a crummy shot, as soon as she figured out she was left eye dominant, she started smashing clays like crazy. My dad had a custom shotgun stock made to fit her, as there were not shotguns in existence 10+ years ago to fit left shooting women.
I'm one of those with the center shift and a right hand dominant. I see both pictures with almost same clarity. I used to shoot with one eye open, which took away my 3d vision. I now shoot with a semi transparent dot on the left eye glass focal point. When I forget my shooting glasses, I clinch (not close) the left eye a bit to give my right eye the lead.

I come from the "Ambidextral Gunfighter", paintball sourced, "optimal use of cover" perspective. My paintball team used drills to "eliminate" eye dominance which I carried over into firearms...pistol and rifle.
With pistols, I'm generally target focused point shooting. With rifles, both eyes open, either eye picks up the sights. Just now working with a shotgun, very much a newbie, but so far it feels very paintball like, left or right handed, both eyes open, target focused.
I squint my left, and focus on my sights with my right, and read with my right. Basically everything to train my right eye, because I'm extremely right hand dominant, I'll never be a lefty shooter, except when i absolutely have to!
Having lost vision in my left eye due to a work accident this year I can certainly say 1 eye as opposed to both drastically effects your depth perception keeping both those eyes open will help you way more than you realize!
I'm left eye dominant & didn't know until today when I watched your program. I'm right handed, so all my weapons are for the right hand. I was shooting for 41 years with the left eye shut. Then an instructor at the handgun range suggested, that I would get better results shooting with both eyes open. So I tried & it took me 6 months to get my brain to cooperate & get on the target on quick draw. I now understand that I have taught my brain to switch to my right eye when shooting. Strangely enough your tests show me being left eye dominant. It's only when I do a quick draw motion that my brain switches to the right eye. It's only because I'm very stubborn, that I didn't give up on both eyes open right hand shooting.; It was really hard to teach my "old" brain to switch eye dominance! So I sort of taught my brain to be ambidextrous on the dominant eye. I don't know the explanation, I might not have that strong a dominant left eye; Or it's all the years of using the right eye for sighting that prepped my brain to be able to learn to switch dominant eyes. But it would be interesting to learn, if being able to switch dominant eyes, is a procedural memory skill that most people can learn?

I bought a left handed Affinity for my first gun. Does the job but I feel that it was a bit of a slack attempt (the release button is still in the right handed orientation so there's just a random button on an otherwise closed side).
More recently I found a left handed Silver Pigeon so I bought that too. Very pleased with it so far 🙂

Ended up finding out my son was cross dominant this year. I noticed when shooting his 22 he kept wanting to lay his head clear across the top of the stock. That was the big clue, so I tested him using several different methods and sure enough he’s right handed but left eye dominant. He’s young and so at this point very adaptable. He got his first deer rifle this year and when we picked it out got him a left handed rifle. He immediately started shooting left handed and his form and accuracy instantly improved drastically. Being right handed I wondered if he would have trouble shooting left handed but he was like a fish in water. Hard to believe how much eye dominance influences the whole situation, so much more than left vs right handedness.

Born Left handed, Right eye dominant but now I am ambidextrous. Right hand feels more comfortable these days.
Im left handed right eye dominant. Two years ago switched to shoot right handed. However, I have found that I have narrow set eyes and have a center shift, i have added an occlusion on the left and am now way more consistent. Great video

I have a center shift. I am a retired land surveyor. Always had to use one eye or the Other for close to 30 years on the total station . So there both strong.
I am right handed and shoot right handed but I have to close my left eye, or I roll my shotgun to the center.

This is not a problem with my rifle scope since I have time for my eyes to adjust but with shotguns and handguns where time is of the essence this is a huge problem.

Probably not the best advice and I am not a pro shooter but I went from never hitting anything to hitting most times after putting it on my shotgun.

OK, so I had a hard time at first, and couldn't resist the temptation to close my left eye, so I took out my left contact lens and... Voila! Both eyes open for depth perception and yet completely oblivious to the left eye view of the barrel.
I shoot one eyed all the time and I’m quite successful at clays and pheasants. My right eye and my left eye are naturally completely different in vision.

I'm right handed, but strongly left-eye dominant. My dad luckily noticed it the first time I shot a rifle, so I shoot long guns lefty but handguns righty, both using my left eye. BTW Hickok45 is left-eye dominant and shoots handguns using his right hand and left eye, but he has trained himself to shoot long guns right eye/right shoulder. I guess he's "weak" left-eye dominant.

Pointing eye tests for me end up being if I focus on the target I see two fingers, one on each side. If I focus on my finger, there are two targets. The put the target in a hole test and pull back to your eye ends up with some left and some right.
Hey Steve what gun were you shooting in the vid?
Something weird happens when I do the point test. A few years ago, I used the framing test you demonstrated to determine eye dominance, and found that I was left eye dominant. I did the point test with and without glasses, but the weird thing happened in both situations. Basically, whichever hand I'm pointing with will make that eye dominant. For example, if I am pointing with my right hand, the test will tell me I'm right eye dominant, and if I point with my left hand, the test will tell me I'm left eye dominant. Could this just mean that I don't really have a dominant eye?

Left eye dominant here. I shoot sporting clays & all my firearms lefthanded But shoot my bows right handed. I throw right handed. Shoot darts right or left handed, Bowl right or left handed. IDK, I'm all messed up but pretty dam good at everything I do.

I'm right handed. The point test (with and without glasses) always comes up Right eye dominant. The "framing" test (with and without glasses) always comes u LEFT eye dominant. I'm new to shooting. That said, when I shoot my camera I always use my left eye. My instructor has me start with both eyes open, but close my left eye as soon as I see the target.
I'm right handed, and all my life have been right eye dominant until 5 years ago with both eyes needing surgeries at different times, for different diagnoses. Still do archery right handed, also rifle shooting. Now at 53, not sure I can convert left just for shotgun
Uh, I haven’t done this in a long while. I was right eye dominant. Now I appear to be left eye dominant with a slight center shift. Is this possible? I guess it is but I was surprised.
I mostly shoot pistols and have not noticed any change in accuracy but I’m a one eye shooter using the right eye. (I’ve always done it that way is the answer to the next question). In clays I mostly shoot sporting clays or 5 stands. I shoot that mostly one eye but can shoot both open. I particularly use both on crossers from the left so I get a longer look at the clay. Interested.

If I point at something and then close one eye, I get a big shift to the opposite side, and it doesn't matter which eye I close. So that test doesn't work. However, when I look through a hole with both eyes open and then close one eye I can only see the thing I was looking at with my left eye open. So I'm definitely left eye dominate, which sucks being that I'm right handed.
Can you explain how to shoot cross eye? Or are you saying we need to re-learn how to shoot with our weak hand?

okay that so helpfull but to be honest i shoot since i was 12 year old i was shooting with the right and right hand and i find out now at 31 years old that my dominance eye is the left.....i shoot good but what the advise for this situation should i continue with the right or try practise my left hands?
I'm left eye dominant but I'm right handed I just became a police officer and when I was trying to shoot with a shotgun it was the worst. I shoot very well with my handgun right handed. My range instructor always say that I'm broken lol.

Alas, there exists a video of steve missing a target. Many have told fables and songs of this occurrence. I didn’t believe most of them. I guess this weekend would be the most logical for me to hunt for Bigfoot see if I can find two impossibilities in one week. Wish me luck.

Pointing to an object test seem to be quite undecisive. I think I can do whatever is needed, i.e. point it that way initially that right eye seems to be dominant. Or I can point it right away that left eye would be dominant, because when I focus on the far object - I see literally two fingers by my periferial, so I can chose which of them "two" will end up pointed to the object

I shoot right handed. but whenever I point in an object with my finger with both eyes open, I see two fingers and the object I was pointing at ends up right in the middle centered between my right and left eye. Also, when I raise my shotgun, I see two barrels thoughts maybe I don’t have a dominant eye

what do you do when someone doesn't have a dominant eye? i have a young girl in our club that when she mounts her gun and i sight down the barrel, it lines up with the bridge of her nose. it does exactly the same weather she mounts the gun left handed or right handed. she is very patient but i would like to be able to help her more than i have
Right eye dominant and lost my sight in it from cataract surgery. Shooting left handed just feels wrong.
You may think I'm crazy but if I point with my left hand my right eye is dominant, and if I point with my right hand my left eye is dominant. I shoot my gun with my left hand on the forearm and shoulder it on my right shoulder. Weird to me but I skate goofy foot lol.

Hey Steve, so if I do the point to object in distance I’m right eye dominant… however I struggled shooting for years. A coach had me do the patch on left eye and immediately helped and massive improvement in consistency from day to day. Can dominance shift or fluctuate? I’d have days where I’d shoot fantastic, then the next just struggle, where nothing I could see changed. Have been using the easy hit Tom Knapp optic also solves the problem for me. I love being able to keep both eyes open without a patch. I never look at it, always on the target. It works! So I don’t understand why I come up right eye dominant but struggled without these aids of patch or fiber optic. Any insight? Either way I found my solutions. I’m just curious why this is so.

Eye dominance can change in people depending on age, fatigue, as well as a bunch of other factors. My eye dominance has changed in my mid 50's. I only found out when I took a lesson with a good instructor.
i shoot one eyed, because I am center dominant.
I'm also extremely right eye dominate.

I've never understood all this fuss about eye dominance. If I shoot right handed I use my right eye, if I shoot left handed I use my left eye. BTW I do see two images of the gun but I've learned that when focused on the target the image closest to the center of my chest is the image to use when shooting left or right. As for the secondary image, I just ignore that.

As a right handed left eye dominant shooter I can’t agree more with you that it’s a huge issue. I use a small opaque sticker on my left lens and it makes a world of difference for me. Such a simple fix and means I can shoot both eyes open and only see one barrel rather than 2 that I can see without the patch.
I’m a south paw. With left eye dominance. Write left handed. Eat left handed. Shoot every firearm left hand. Shoot pool left handed. Throw a football left hand. Throw a baseball right handed.🤷♂️ Bat left handed. Play golf right handed…I guess I’m considered a mutt..lol
That’s funny, I am the exact opposite. Do everything righty except golf, which I do lefty! 😂
