    ND takes less money in TV revenue in order to remain independent. They value college football tradition. Whereas other football powerhouses value money above all else. It's not an ND problem. It's a broader college football problem and folks want to punish ND for what they say they actually love about the sport. The traditions.

      That's all fine and good. But Notre Dame should not get to have a representative who has an equal vote alongside the commissioners of entire conferences. No other independent team gets that. No other team period gets that. They are just one team. Even the Alabamas, Ohio States, Texas's, and Southern Cals of the world have to share their rep with a bunch of other schools.
      I don't hate the way ND does things or want to "punish" them. I want them to be equal to everyone else.

    You all are looking at the world wrong. The answer really is more teams should be independent, not the other way around.
    Answer this, if the people that made the decisions for Miami and Penn State could go back in time and undo it? Of course they would! They were waaaaay better off as independants.
    College football was at its peak when there were MORE Independents, not the other way around.

      Also, nobody seems to mention, in this discussion, how easy it was to see one of these power conferences completely fold over a cpl days.
      What is the use in joining one of these conferences if everyone can just "independently" jump ship any time?

    Pretty much all of the comments capture many valid reasons WHY Notre Dame gets to function as it wishes (I refuse to embrace the canard that they supposedly "play by their own rules" because they don't -- they play the same rules and restrictions as everyone else ... they simply do it as an independent). But here are others in a brief nutshell: ND is VERY good for college football and is actually the MODEL by which any decent program should aspire. They insist their student-athletes are GENUINE students first and foremost. They actually CARE that their players EARN their degree so that they can be productive in society and earn a living when/if "pro" sports fails to work out for any of many different reasons (e.g., injury, a numbers crunch, etc.) They already play a national schedule. They are LEADERS (recall that it was because of ND's INDEPENDENCE that they were the first team of stature and relevance who said "we intend to play football" during COVID despite most every other conference attempting to shut football down; it was ND's leadership and "pull" that SAVED College Football for the 2020 season because once ND showed that leadership, the conferences caved and allowed its teams to play a delayed schedule.

  • @kirancourt

    Notre Dame administrators have yet to fall to this idiotic idea that having more TV money is the only way to go. Nebraska, Miami, soon to be Florida State are getting drug through the mud so much so that just winning 10 games people jump around saying they're back. The school presidents don't care how football programs or any sports programs for that matter are effected by any of this. Just so long as they got more money to spend. Kudos to Notre Dame for succumbing to this yet. I'm won't be surprised if one day they will but that's why they don't have to dance to the beat of anyone else's drum.

    Chip Kelly has it right. Major College Football powers should all be independent. The Conferences are the ones ruining college football.
    There needs to be one top decision maker in charge of College Football. Not Conference Commissioners looking out for themselves. Get more bigger matchups and structure the schedule like the NFL. You play four annual rivals every year and the rest of your schedule rotates amongst the other power teams.

      @TheJasonJackson84 ปีที่แล้ว

      @ponagesports5447 there is no guarantee that it has to happen. There is no good reason why that should happen. But only because a few people think that is a better way when in actuality it isn't. All of this is happening for corporate greed. College sports are different than professional sports.
      The reason this is really happening is because the corporations know the ball is slowing on the NFL. The XFL, USFL and the other spring football league have been experimentations to figure out what changes can be implemented into the NFL to make it more interesting. Football at the college level is a better onfield product. But a few people feel there are too many teams to keep up with and that it is too regionally based. That's not how the majority of college football fans see things.
      CFB fans don't want a corporate takeover like the NFL has gone through. And trust and believe that when the overwhelming majority of CFB bows to the dollar and implement a 2 major league system the soul is going to leave the game.

There is no conference football team that can manipulate the rest of the conference to do things like grab a bigger piece of the pie with threats of leaving, etc.and ND is one of the reasons for that. If the big 3 or 4 ACC football teams, or even one of them, were to leave, the team(s) that leaves would lose that periodic game with the national brand team, the recruiting gains that comes with periodically playing ND. They've used their history and "independence" to generate excitement and interest for the last 20 years. Honestly they have had a couple decent teams but they continue to be one of the most BORING programs to watch and follow. It took a long time for Michigan to get with the times but they're trending up and back to national relevance. What they had done previously was no longer working. Go Blue
