      For sure. These shots are well known in pool, because the different cushions and pocket facings make a "down the rail shot" quite easy. The short answer is that contact induced spin will push the ball into the rail, so a shot with inside spin must be hit rail first; a shot with outside spin counter-acts the spin and you can hit the ball first.

    I was really hoping you would make a video addressing this now-(in)famous call by the ref. Well done as always. The slow motion camera, now so readily available, is a wonderful thing for illustrating what actually happens. It's all well and good to talk about theory, but I'll take indisputable, objective methods of analysis any day over people putting out their best guess on internet polls. Sorry for the paragraph comment. Cheers from Saskatoon, Canada!

    This is the exact kind of knowledge I love to see in the community. I dont have the time or equipment to do this kind of research but this information is what makes the cuesports interesting for me. There is a lot to learn in billiard type games, but events we cant observe with the naked eye will always interest me, I love learning about concepts I can only understand through practice and I am glad you made this video.

    Hi.
    About the last point, the cushion sligthly before the object ball.
    That comes from certain pool tables which have internal mechanisms for returning the cue ball that rely on the cue ball to have a slightly larger diameter (the tables with coin machines which keep the object balls in). Therefore you have to push the extra diameter into the cushion to get the correct angle on the hit.

    About the shots along the rail. I believe it's because when you hit the cushion first it imparts a little side on the object ball which helps it hug the cushion. If they contact at the same time the object ball will already be moving away before the cue ball and cushion can impart any side on the object ball.

    Just proves the harder you hit the shot the more chance of bouncing balls and misses ,probably why the ultra thin cloths in tournaments produce so many high breaks these days , maximum reaction with minimum effort .At least the Taom chalk has nearly eliminated kicks on the tc balls we are stuck with these days .Mr Life ,when your table is ready for a new cloth ,check out Strachen Superfine ,its supposed to be ultra fast and grippy,only heard good things about it ,think I'm having it on next year .The no 10 that you can get is not I don't think the same product as what is seen on tv ,that stuff only lasts a few weeks ,the Superfine produces near on tournament conditions apparently and is reasonably hard wearing on a private table .Nice video mate .

    The rule is not open to interpretation, the only problem is that it is not often enforced by referees.
    If player is attempting a pot, he is clearly not hitting the object ball as thin as possible, so the "very fine edge" does not apply.
    In order for a simultaneous contact to be a legal shot, very little of the cuebulls momentum will be transferred to the object ball.

    The cue ball seems to have come off the object ball at or even behind the 90-degree line. That would indicate there was no second contact. There was no evidence from the ball paths that there was a foul, so in my opinion the referee should not have called a foul.
    It helps in such situations to know that the tip and cue ball travel together for about three times the amount that the tip and cue are compressed during contact. That's not very far -- not even a centimeter. To see this, it is useful to have (or borrow) a camera that can do at least 1000 frames per second. Also, you need to be focus well on the tip.

    • @richjhart
      @richjhart 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Touching ball is a special case, which is why you have to play away from the object ball, because you are, by definition, doing a push shot. Playing away from the object ball is the proof that the push shot is not affecting anything, so it's allowed.

  • @mattyayres1127
    @mattyayres1127 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Surely you’re right about hitting the cushion first. As the cue ball leaves the cushion it will hit and add some spin to the object ball keeping it tight to the cushion. If you were to hit both at the same time you’d add spin to the object ball taking away from the cushion ending in a miss? Might only be the slighted but if spin but may have a massive effect! Just a thought, be good to see it looked at more.

    There's this persistent myth in snooker, which is repeated by some very good players, that you get better spin by deliberately changing your stroke to somehow get longer tip contact time.
    This has no foundation in science. The ball leaves your tip in 1 to 3 milliseconds. You didn't get your tip to stay on for three frames out of a 240 FPS recording. The motion blur and resolution are not sufficient for you to see the tip actually contacting the ball during those frames.
    You can't deliberately increase contact time on a firmly struck shot. There's no magic wrist snap or smooth follow-through that will do it. The closest you can come to deliberately prolonging tip contact time is the stroke so slowly that the tip gently nudges the ball repeatedly.
    If you strike the ball hard enough to move it at 20 kph, then it doesn't matter what you did mechanically prior to that moment of impact. 20 kph is 20 kph. There is no scenario where the ball flies away at 20 kph but somehow the tip hugged it for triple the normal time.
    Even if you deliberately prolong contact, the spin you get on the ball is a result of force being applied to whatever area was struck. Spreading the same force out over a longer contact time doesn't increase it.
    I know that intuitively, it would seem to make sense that the tip must grab the ball, and if it grabbed harder it would somehow impart more spin. But there's diminishing returns. If the tip hits the ball without sliding across the surface, then it's imparting as much spin as it can because none of the spin was lost from 'slippage'. Increasing friction beyond that will not increase spin.
    If increased contact time = more grip = better action, then by now we would have developed a special draw chalk that gets you two extra feet of draw by simply being stickier than average chalk.
    Ronnie shot away from that ball, and regardless how close to the edge he was, this tip never made contact with the ball a second time. Nor was it hugging the cue ball at the moment of impact, that's ridiculous, he struck firmly and the cue ball left the tip immediately. Then the cue ball went directly down the tangent line before the topspin visibly took over. The ref blew this one.

    I'm not a pro player or anything remotely close, in fact, i haven't been close to a table in 20 years but when playing balls on the cushion i always hit cushion first.
    It felt logic and a matter of common sense to me at the time.
    If you hit ball first or both at the same time, you are giving the ball a push against the cushion which will make it bounce outwards inevitably. By hitting cushion first, and it's only miliseconds maybe, the cue ball compresses the cushion and hits the ball "from the other direction", dunno if that makes sense but it is hard to explain for me in english as i am not english native speaker :-).

    No. Your video of when you play with screw or topspin isn't actually showing that the tip is in contact with the cue ball... It's just showing that the cue ball moves away slower (as expected) and hence the tip stays closer to the cue ball, but not necessarily in contact with it. Your footage was too fuzzy to show this difference and you made the wrong assumption that the tip is in contact with the CB.
    So back to the question. Was Ronnie's shot a push shot? Absolutely Not.

      In the Ronnie’s shot cue ball starts to travel at 90degrees angle to the object ball direction, that strongly suggest the shot wasn’t a foul. And it’s a lot thinner than you showing in the video. At the thin angle, it is actually quite hard to make double contact because the cue ball escapes to side so quickly.
      There are many shots in the artistic billiard where cue ball and object ball is as close as 5mm or less and you have to make legal hit and draw or follow then make double rails and so on. The Ronnie’s shot is much easier than that.

    Well done on the video again but for me definitely not a foul impossible with the angle and distance

    Brilliant. You did really well with the slomo's. I think, from my last mention of this, you have well achieved enough detail with the equipment you have to explain these issues and I can't wait until you have a camera upgrade, I have always wondered if the friction of the cue ball has any determinable amount of effect upon the object ball and if there are any visible evidences of static between the cue and object ball. Is it possible to measure the static charge of the cloth near the playing of a shot or from a player or if any material such as carpet, shoes and trousers etc could effect the static charge. I know the ref wears certain type of gloves to help avoid static as well as other issues such as grease from his hands. Very well done and thank you for exploring this with the slomo's. Can't wait to see more. Graham from Thurso in Scotland :)

    As a referee I tell players that to lessen the chances of a double hit is to aim so that the stroke line would not pass through the object ball.

      No that’s way harder. The rules of Snooker are usually easy to explain which makes this even more annoying
