That black and decker wasn't a waste of time for us. I enjoyed seeing the inside of it and how its built. Different era. Thanks.
You are absolutely correct. Dean investigated it and found out that it could not be fixed

Thats why they dont make them in EU or US anymore. Just imagine the cost nowadays for all that cast aluminium casing.
Nice and clean can be put on display.
👍 not a waste of time!
The black and decker looks awesome! I really love the old tools and how they look!
Dean, your comment about the old drill being responsible for breaking wrists was so right and seeing your video sure brought back memories.
In 1967 my only drill, also an all aluminum one, was ¼” DeSouter Streamline, (which cost me all of 10 quid, on HP, I should add ) It was not up to boring the 1 ½” hole for the propellor shaft in the boat I was building, so I borrowed an identical model Black and Decker “Heavy Duty” drill to push a 3 foot long twist bit through the keel.
I was alone and the boring went OK until the bit started to break through, whereupon the flutes jammed into the boat's outer fiberglass skin. The drill bit stopped but the drill, along with my arms, my trunk and the drills cable, all started rotating. As the cable tightened it wrapped my hands under it, jamming my fingers so I could not release the switch. By this time the top handle had caught in the vee of the hull and a sort of equilibrium became established with me twisted up like a pretzel!
While the drill had stalled, it kept applying torque keeping me pinned with my arms under massive strain and feeling like they were about to break. After what seemed an eternity but was probably only seconds, I managed to manipulate my fingers enough to release the switch. So yeah, that’s the memory.
That could have ended vary badly. Hope you where OK.
@@deandohertygreaser I only had mental scars and a healthy respect for old style slow drills. A older friend later loaned me a similar large Wolf Drill he had bought in 1947 and I was super careful how I used it. Always connected via an isolating transformer as well.
That Skilsaw looks a beast 👍 looks an expensive bit of kit
That Skilsaw looks a beast 👍 looks an expensive bit of kit
that was quite the funny story you painted the picture exceptionaly well and gave me a bit of a laugh , hope nothing horrific came of it but yeah i remmeber those drills haaving the torque equal to a 4x4.
I've only recently found your channel and I appreciate your explanation of how things work. Watching your methods and attention to detail has allowed me to repair several of my own tools. Thank you
Hope everything is well, Storm Eowyn hit Ireland hard. News in the states said a good amount of Ireland is without power. Thoughts are with you guys.
Thanks for a full year of interesting repairs.
I've just got the 18v 23g dewalt pin nailer and that thing is an absolute dream for finish work👌not cheap mind at 320 quid
Thanks for all your hard work Dean, I know editing these videos can be a real time consuming chore! I’ve learned a ton from these videos, as I know many other viewers have as well. I hope the new year brings many blessings for you and your family, and this wonderful business!
Oh nice, I had some Omer. Great nailers! That and BAE. Much nicer than the modern home store crap everyone uses here.
Happy New Year Dean
Thanks for all the good repair work and sharing your knowledge and experience with such honest good humour!
As an observation on mains powered (especially metal bodied) tools you could do with having an insulation resistance tester - particularly that B&D drill. You need to be testing wiring for leakage from live/neutral to earth, and between windings, and live and neutral, with a minimum of 250 volts - a DMM will only show simple resistive shorts.
To test for cable insulation breakdown you need to use a voltage which simulates mains potential.
All mains powered tools should also be Portable Appliance Tested regularly particularly in the building industry which the HSE recommends should be monthly.
Great video to start off the new year, loved the variety in this one!
Thanks for another great video. Here's for a great 2025!
Same to you!
Happy New Year Dean. Thank you for all the time and effort you put in to making and sharing these videos. Many thanks. Shane
Same to you!
Shame that old B&D wasn't fixable. I'm a sucker for the old stuff! Happy New Year Dean and to all the tool boys. Wishing peace and prosperity for the coming year.
Happy New Year Dean, looking forward to more fantastic content throughout 2025 🎉🎊🍻
Happy New Year from Australia, Dean. I never believed in repairs; if any electrical product broke out it went & l'd buy new. I'm addicted to your channel, love it & now I'm reconsidering what I've always done & believed. I'd certainly send any of my tools to you if they broke what a pity you're not in Australia.
Also that black and decker widow maker, they made a contraption for those that allowed it to be the power unit of a drill press. It may have been in a shop as a relic, but maybe still running.
Love seeing these old tools!
With that old B&D we used to put a piece of timber through the handle so that if the drill bit caught, the bit snapped not our wrists. Horrible old machines but they last almost forever and will put a reduced shank twenty mill high speed steel bit through inch plate if you’re careful so they were a workhorse. Great video as always Dean. A Happy and successful New Year to you mate.
HAPPY NEW YEAR and big thanks for share your knolegdge
Great video as always!
Keep the good work in 2025!
Happy new year Dean! Thanks for this treat!🎉
Happy New Year from Northern Colorado!
Another great year Dean Thanks always interesting hopefully 200,000 subscribers is not far away .Happy New Year to you and your family
That B&D drill is a sad one to see go, but at least it lived for a while. Happy New Year from Australia, Dean. Here's to a great one 🎉
Dean, loved each and every video you posted last year. Happy New Year. ☺️
HAPPY NEW YEAR to you and yours from across the pond.
I had a couple if Omer stappe guns for upholstery. Great bits of kit. Trying to get my current employer to buy one is hard work
Happy new year!
Black and Decker drill, labor of love, garage wall hanger or send the armature to a Pakistan dirt floor armature rebuild shop. 😊
Have a great New Year Dean!🎉
thank you for having a go at that old piece of iron. i have a small pile of tools from that vintage i'll get to some day. i wish you were closer i have some really cool pieces that work but could use a refresh. one is set up to be an angle drill but it started it's life as a starter for a ww2 airplane. I got it from my great uncle. he used it for a 90degree drill but when i looked it up it was a starter for a plane. he flew in ww2 so it might have been for his plane... he's gone now so i'll never know
Nice job Dean
Happy New Year Dean! and many more tools to fix.
Happy days 🎊
Happy New Year from down under, thanks for all the videos this year. Especially enjoy watching you fix tools I have, look forward to many more
Happy new year Dean, wishing you a happy and prosperous 2025
Happy New Year Dean. Learnt a lot from you over 2024.
Best video yet 👍🏻
Thank you, Happy New Year.😉
Cheers for the video Mr Dean and happy new year to you and your family
I bet that slow drill has caused more than a few apprentices to cry !
Happy New Year
Thanks dean you e helped me revive a few of my old tools this year all the best from🏴
Thank you,and best wishes for 2025
Thanks for all Dean. Happy new year.
Happy new year Dean
Thanks as always Dean ! Just want to say I've learned so much from your videos, thanks for putting them out!!!!! To you and yours Happy New Year!!!!!!
Used to love firing the fasco nailer around the workshop in 1996 good times, HR would have a fit now
Great to see you doing other things as well happy new year 🎉
Happy New Year Dean!!😊
Dear Dean, all the best for 2025. Your level of expirience and in field knowledge is unmatched! Regarding the Skillsaw: Doesn't the motor need rewiring if you run it on the european grid with 230V, 50 Hz instead of the US grid with 120V and 60 Hz? Regards from Germany.
It had a 110v UK spec plug on it as required for UK site power tools. Step down transformers are used on site to connect 110v tools to UK mains supply.
Also it's 2025 now I think it's time we see some new nail boards dean😂
Here they sell the switches brushes and gear oil in the tool isle ar Lowes. Switch goes for like 10 bucks. For the Skillsaw.
I just repaired a mate's Milwaukee grinder but the bearing had melted into both halves of the housing really bad so I replaced it with a 625-2RS (5x16x5) bearing I had to scrape out both sides of the housing for bearing to fit, I did fit bearing to armature first then when I tried pushing it through the hall effect board it just wouldn't go through so in the end I had to pull the bearing off and fit another bearing but had to put the armature through the hall effect board then push the bearing back on then assemble the grinder back into the clamshell, it works but next time the bearing goes I will have a job of getting that bearing off in situ, I did say to him see if you can get another body but he didn't want to wait for one to come around so just done a bodge up for him.
What do you use to clean the stator or rotor so that you don't damage the insulation, but still remove the grease?...thanks for the advice in advance...greetings from Slovenia🇸🇮...I wish you a happy and healthy new year🎉🎄😃👍
Nice dean
It's sad to see the old B&D go. My great-grandfather's smaller one still works.
Happy New years . I have this exact same saw . I gave 149.99 for it with two batteries three years ago . I love it
what saw? the Bosch jigsaw or the galax pro?
@@GRamerDim With batteries - so I guess the Bosch jigsawe
I restored one of those old black & decker drills for a friend just the other day and made sure to warn him about the safety issues, especially hiw easy it will break your wrist if it binds. Just a pity this one was too far gone.
Dean dat Milwaukee grinder if you squeeze that inner bearing race in a vice a cracks into halves quick and easy way
amazing to see that brand galax-toys in europe
I have one of those b&d drills was used for drilling lorry chassis when it grabbed you just let go till it wound the cable up n pulled the plug out two men could not hold it. I still use it to hone cylinders suspend from an inner tube
As a suggestion: maybe it's a good idea to use the so-called "growler" (or a similar device) for testing questionable armatures. It would save you the time wasted like with the old Black&Decker drill. Happy new year !
He does use a growler
@@NeilPendred Possibly, although I haven't seen it in his videos, although I watch them. I think in the case of this blueish electric motor it would have been a good idea to use it. But anyway, it was an interesting video.
That all metal body core drill looks very risky these days, even if it could have been fixed. A very interesting machine but under the wrong conditions that could seriously hurt someone.
The Skilsaw - the saw that built America .What kind of oil would be suitable because i think with heavy use its supposed to be changed once a year or so ...would there be something available over here 👍 Happy New Year
The jokers that built that Galax saw need to use a better grade of coal for makin brushes out of I think. 8^) Guess it was cheaper than real brush graphite maybe... Cheers from Canada!
At least the Black and Decker might be able to be recycled whereas the modern stuff is just bin fodder. When Dean is testing the vacuum switch at 1:04 you can see a cloud of dust coming from the switch, the new switch has a dust cver to prevent that happening.
Hey dean what kind of grease do you use? I have a 735 planer and need to put some in the infeed/ outfeed roller gearbox. Thanks and happy new year!
Have a good one👍wouldn’t you think a note attached to the tool giving you an idea of what is wrong with it?
10:25 Why can't you have full metal body tools?
Great job with the skill saw, those are tanks, all metal, would last a lifetime compared to the plastic crap they make now. Only someone with your vast experience would know about other manufactures parts that might fit.
That is a later Skil, which is Chervon, and i thought evolution was Chervon. Possible they use the same or very similar part.
You can't get metal bodies tools in Europe? I have an old Milwaukee worm drive, a Skil truss saw, and a cheap Harbor freight "cheap tool" worm drive. All are amazing. In heavier applications i prefer metal bodies. They all seem to hold up better.
The Galax Pro circular saw at the end will probably last forever with real brushes instead of fake ones😂
Looks like the Pro in Galax Pro is short for "Proceed to the nearest bin and insert tool" To be fair at £36 for the tool on Amazon i'm not sure why the owner is even trying to get it repaired. By the time they have paid for a new set of brushes and a new blade it will cost more than buying a new one.
Im just laughing at the shit people probably seen happpen to others using that B&D drill LMAO
Use a bit of wood turning on those electric metal units perhaps ?
Also available from your favourite ali china store skill switch for 3 pounds same switch identical to some Ryobi n rigid
That Black and Decker was used to build Noah's Ark!
What kind of fluid do you use in your parts cleaner.
I was happy to hear your praise about the mighty Skilsaw 77. Might've gave a think to unsubscribing had you spoke poorly of it!
Tag Essential Craftsman
Too bad the B&D didn’t go back to work , it was clearly done a lot of workin it’s day!
Any idea why you cant buy full metal body tools like the skilsaw in europe?
That Black & Decker is an absolute monstrosity!!! It needs marinating in the sea for a few years, not fixing!
Back when everything had flatheads.
For the regulars here, I have watched a few videos of Dean now to figure out what type of grease he uses.
Does anyone know what he uses? Looks like vaseline to me.
As per below, nothing you do is a waste of time. You checked it out and made a decision. Plus it's educational for me at least.
Why not fit ebay or aliexpress components when the original parts are gone?
Cause he can't warranty garbage Chinesium parts! He has used aftermarket rotors*armature in certain tools that have no parts available anymore.👍🏻⚡🔋🔌
What you're talking about you don't just toss it out into the skip they'll be collectors items because you just don't see them anywhere anymore you're absolutely mental 🤨🤨 and another thing it wasn't really a waste of time because it was very interesting to see just how they made these older machines back in the days
Dean see of you can order the part # of the switch 26one o3twentyone6o8
21:57 Your counter top covering just instantly got immaculately clean! You must've changed out the vinyl flooring counter covering between those different videos clips on different days! Pretty slick!
That Black & Decker slow drill should be hung on a wall as a "Rustic" decoration. Exactly right @felixcosty
Dean see of you can order the switch by part # 26one∅3two16o8
Stupid youtube wont let me post a 7 digit # or the rest of my f'n comment! I fucking hate this bull $h¡T sometimes
